I look foward to seeing it -- if nothing else but for curiosity sake. Is there somewhere I can read about it and check out screen shots?

Learning without a teacher?
stl_karateka replied to mirroredfire's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm sure there are sites and videos that'll claim to teach you basics, but without an instructor to provide correction and training you may just end up developing bad habits --- and if you decide to join a school later it may be difficult to 'un-learn' bad habits. I'd suggest waiting until you can join a formal class...especially if you've never done any MA before. Perhaps you can find someone who doesn't teach out of a school...no contract, less restrictive hours...perhaps private lessons Best of luck to you! Mod: Thought I made a mistake in typing....how about I say formal lessons instead.... -
If you don't mind me asking. What brand is it and how much did it cost you? Century, and I'm not paying for it but I think its about $40
-
I heard it from my instructor, but I believe I also read it in a book....I think it was just called "Okinawan Karate" --- I'll have to find the exact source and get back to you.

Anku Itosu, creator of the Pinan Series, mastered the toe kick so much so that he used it in a fight and the guy died later from internal bleeding.

I'm just giving you a hard time SS!

half hour of non-stop sparring?????? I must be reading that wrong....you mean the class is 1/2 hour right? How long are your matches? We go for an hour doing 2-minute matches. We only run 2 rings at a time so there are small breaks in between, but I work up a good sweat by the time its all over with! Sano - I'm not sure who you are addressing, but we get to kick to the head.

Supposedly they are designed not to...some special kind of plastic coating and the holes strategically placed.....whatever, I should get mine thursday so how about I tell you thursday night? Of course if we don't spar I won't know until Saturday afternoon...either way I'll give you my first hand report as soon as I can.

Its all good ShorinRyu Sensei -- I've always respected your opinion, and I still do, I figure it was only a matter of time before we disagreed! Why you in the sport martial arts section anyway Mr Traditionalist?

As far as the sparring safety zone -- I was at the BlueGrass and the judges all but stop the competition to get people to move back....the fight starts and people creep their way back to the front floor 'danger zone' --- I wish I could say that it was just the spectators that displayed this lack of discipline but it was competitors as well...eventually the judges just wash their hands of it and if you get trampled its your own fault. ----- Yes I was talking about point sparring and creative forms. Sevenstar going by rb's interpretation of your question -- I don't count MT, BJJ and Judo as sport martial arts. Perhaps my definition of SMA is limited but it is this: -Creative and Musical forms that have little or no bunkai. -Olympic Style sparring, point sparring, and to some degree continous fighting - Creative weapons -- usually done with an ULTRA light glitzy weapon (I don't like the glitz....put the flash in your form, not in the weapon) - eXtreme martial arts (yes they are getting their own division) -- I'm not crazy about this either....this is more extreme than what was on discovery channel. Right now the divisions are in their infant stage, but they have requirements like 540 and tornado kicks, k-kicks, back hand springs, etc...and after each of these moves you have to end with some sort of block or strike ( that's how the justify to MA) ------------- I don't include BJJ, Judo, or MT under MY definition of SMA. New question --- If you do martial arts AND they run competion --- does that make it a sport?

I just came across this site and thought of this thread: http://sites.unetcommerce.com/reksuit/index.cfm?refer=Robbie

Depends on the rank, the person, and the school. The rank: For example white - yellow can be done in about 3 months. Green - blue or green - brown ---- may take 6 months The person: Some people progress faster than others The school: Some schools have set test dates...maybe one ever 3 months....others promote when they feel you are ready. Hope this helps!

Do you feel this way about judo, bjj and muay thai also? What does judo, bjj and mt have to do with ANYTHING I said?
-
Interesting comment --- why do you feel that way? I mean...how do you define sport?
-
Any kind --- I'm just curious what people think. For the TKD olympic tournies they have to wear chest guards right? In most tournaments I do the minimum requirement is head, hands, feet, mouthpiece, and groin protector for guys. I've seen some tournies where min requirements is just hand gear. Personally I only wear the minimum and recent addition face shield to protect the healing nose. Yeah I agree --- insurance is a factor!

Thanks Jussi --- I meant back kick -- my bad! I visited a Shotokan Dojo again and thats how they broke it down to me....crescent 180 then back kick --- however we integrated the jump just before the back kick. I think that was more confusing --- I'm going to try your idea and commit to getting the motion in muscle memory then adding the jump. That is what my currrent instructor wants me to do anyway And I usually do...then he comes out there and does it with me and gets that jump and I just gotta try again!!!
