taking my 3 1/2 year old to start
stl_karateka replied to seniormint's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
This is my advice: You said you may sign up at the same school. If you do decide to sign up, save yourself the headache and signup at the same school! That way you wont run into conflicts when practicing at home etc I'm concerned about the 3-8 age range...that's huge when you are talking about kids. Its not like adults where you can say 16 and up and expect everyone to operate on the same level.....what is the student to teacher ratio? It sounds like you and your son are excited! Should be a good time and I look forward to hearing about it after Saturday's class! At 3 1/2, I am sure there will be some good days and some bad days --- you'll have to find that balance between encouragement and pushing. I taught for a while back in my old school --- the min age was 4....after I left they instituted a little dragons program where they worked skills like conentration, balance, listening, memorization through drills and games. I've kept in contact with them and they say when the kids are then put in the mainstream class they perform better....so I think it is good that at a young age they keep it upbeat and fun. Best of luck! -
Just looked over more stuff on this girls site - I have little respect for her. And she's going after an Air Force commission --- oy vay! We don't need that kind of haughtiness amoung our leaders! And attitude like that isn't going to get ANYONE to follow you.

I get all excited about new katas! Unsu is going to be my new tournament kata My instructor thinks that I can show off my kicks and balance a little more in that kata and not lose the ability to set in a good firm cat stance which judges seem to love. He also realizes I'm crazy enough to go for the air on the 360 crescent/side kick. My tournament kata aresenal is: kunsanku chinto gojushiho unsu (at least --- it will be) I think each of them has traits which make them winners.

3 1/2 is pretty young --- usually I seen 4 as the cutoff. Do they have a special class for kids that young (like a little dragons or something)? At that age they'll probably focus more on concentration, balance etc. I read in your intro that you trained 8 years ago --- you going to get back into it? -
Welcome --- tell be sure to tell us how your son's class goes! You going to get back into it?

I just read the 4 dojo visits --- The girl is very arrogant and gives practicioners a bad name! Not because she didn't like the schools --- to be honest there is some stuff I read up there that would make me run in the other direction. But the fact that she blatantly flamed these schools --- names and specifics aren't necessary. Furthermore, isn't martial arts about humility? Especially those who go about proclaiming that belts are necessary and no indicator of skill.....where is the humility in telling master ranks that they are wrong, swearing in the dojo, etc? Where is the humility in thinking that because you've trained for 12 years you got it all figured out? Note -- she didn't actually come out and say she has all the answers but this is how she portrays it. And 4 black belts and 3 different styles in 12 years? So what does that make her? Shodan, maybe a Nidan --- I don't think it says...hmmm Something doesn't add up....for someone who doesn't see the use in rank to obtain 4 BBs....in 12 years.....she probably crossed between similiar styles and was allowed to keep rank. Bottom line - I was completely turned-off by her "I know if all" attitude.

It is said it takes 10 years to master Kusanku --- its the last kata in the Matsubayshi ShorinRyu system ---- so you've worked 17 katas before you get to this one.....now, to master Kusanku --- 10 years --- do you stop working on the other 17? If anything I'd think that would be detremental to the training. now I'm really curious cause it does bring up a good point....cymry --- what does the book say --- did he only do that one kata for 5 years or just concentrate on that kata?

Bad Martial Art Clichés.

Cliche: "Point sparring is a waste of time, it will never work on the streets." "Tournaments are a waste of time, I don't need other people to tell me how I am progressing" "Martial arts is not a sport, its a state of mind" -
Welcome to the boards!

So true --- about adopting katas to them! I'm finding out the same holds true with kamas --- not as much though --- perhaps it is cause I am still more familiar with the sai
-
whew! I thought I was going to get branded for that one! Good points delta1
-
I have no problem saying I would be bored to tears only working on one kata for five years!
-
I think I'm misunderstood then..... I consider double punches / combos an interchangable term --- so I consider backfist / reverse punch or reverse punch body / head a double punch What I think I'm getting is you are saying a double punch is to the same location, is that correct?

Hehehe --- I dont really have any one liners but when I know we are going to play 'pick your poision' I talk it up big! In this game everyone, starting lowest rank to high rank picks who they want to fight --- and you can be picked many of times So I try to talk up a big game and usually get a good 7-10 fights on a good night
-
it almost got me too --- I had to run it though my head a second time ---- it would have got me if I didn't know it was supposed to be a trick. I missed the last one

Actually I have a couple of Angi's videos (obviously not the ones with Sunsu, and Bo Bo) My brain doesn't work like that - videos are hard for me to follow unless I already know what's going on and paying for the entire video defeats the purpose when I've really narrowed the question down to a couple stances. I don't need pics of Yakosu I just need to know what foot forward and what stance defense ends the finishing punch in. Thanks for the help
