  1. When I want to be technical I say I study karate and kobudo
  2. I use double punches --- I'm not sure simultaneous is allowed....
  3. Thanks for the heads up --- I found the site about 2 hours ago when someone referenced the improper use of "OSU" I'll be honest, my first thoughts (especially after reading his finding a good dojo) was that while he has some good thoughts he's very arrogant and opinionated. I have no desire to post on his forums --- I get all the karate talk I need right here Besides, its probably mostly Shotokan stuff right? I'll skim thru the rest of it when I get some down time I work for the week -- thanks for the head's up thought
  4. Lots of elements to karate. I attend a school where we rotate between some variations of kata, sparring, self-defense, and foundation drills. Isn't all karate self-defense? Some would say yes, but I'm not so sure --- I will say that all of your karate training should be a factor in effective self defense. On our self defense nights we practice against 'street techiques' such as lapel grabs, bear hugs, incoming punches etc. Every once in a while we even do knife self defense --- our instructor is very real and doesn't try to give any of us a false sense of security. He says that if someone pulls a knife on you and you can't get away, ie forced to defend yourself...you probably will get cut --- but pay attention and practice these techinques and you should get out alive. Pessimistic? Yeah. Realistic. Very. one of the main points of karate is to teach self defense. But it is taught differently so you have to find a school that suits your needs. Also, self defense has so many factors you can put into a karate school not matter how hard you try. For one thing, street fighters don't fight fair, there may be an element of surprise, will you remember your training, will they have a weapon, are they drugged up so your strikes are ineffective. So to answer your question - karate gives you an advantage. Of course the more training, time and practice the better your odds
  5. Southwest IL - 15 miles east of St Louis
  6. Thanks! For Bo-Bo when offense thrusts are they in a cat or deep front stance? Yes it's Angi Uezus lineage and we did yakosu 1-5
  7. Yep - I know the 2 katas I need for my nidan and got 2 years to sharpen them up Along with my other katas of course!
  8. Been there many a times I used to frequent that site after learning a new I-Ryu kata. OK....that'll help me with Sunsu -- and that was the hard one. All I need now is Yakosu Kumite #5 defense (I think it is right foot forward, block side kick, hook block spin back kick....then the FINISHING PUNCH is all I am blanking on) Bo-Bo Kumite #10 defense and offense (I know offense strikes - lunge? And defense transitions to horse stance and blocks and counters) - need specifics
  9. Was this an invite only / closed tourny? Reason I ask is that whole thing about being able to perform your belt level --- I only came across that in closed tournaments If you are going to keep doing tournaments, you may want to invest in sport glasses. Some people can spar in contacts but I don't like to - its a preference thing. Or, depending on how near-sighted you are -- take you glasses off about 15/20 minutes before you fight and let your eyes start to adjust --- this is what I do, and I have gotten used to fighting without them Good job though!
  10. Who else wants to hear the coconut story?
  11. Who's Rob? what site? somebody clue me in!
  12. I sure will! I have a list of 50 sponsors I am going to start with -- some local, some bigger companies. I should be ready to send out the first package in a couple weeks --- I'll only send out 10 (5 local, 5 big) - and see what kind of response I am getting...I may have to change my approach before I go wasting a bunch of postage! I'll keep you posted --- and anyone else that has been through this process...please share your stories and keep the advice coming!
  13. Freak accident....stuff happens! I'm just glad its not all disfigured n stuff
  14. I realize you said you have done MA for a long time and don't know why --- but during that time did you enjoy it? Or have you started to dislike it when you started teaching?
  15. Kamas isn't on the list *Sniffles*
  16. Agree with everything you said --- I don't want to say anymore and ruin it for those who haven't seen.
  17. Good question and observation. I'd say quaility is better than quanity. IsshinRyu has 8 katas and Matsubayashi ShorinRyu has 18. Does that mean I-Ryu is more in depth? Certainly not....the first katas in ShorinRyu for example (Fuyagata Ichi and Fuyagata Ni) were added in 1940 cause the Pinan series were too hard for children. A few years before that in 1907 the Pinan series were included for high school type students. Before that it started with Nahanchi....so those katas are smaller patterns. As far as bunkai goes --- as far as I know all traditional katas have bunkai -- some moves are more obvious than others...but after you learn a few katas it becomes easier to ID the bunkai in other katas. My two cents!
  18. I forgot weapons! Tokumenie No-Kun (Bo) Kusanku-Sai No Nun-chuck Dai Ichi No Kama Dai Ichi Tsumajakaze No Kama
  19. Nothing too terrible, I've been really blessed! Right now my nose is broken -- that happened last Thursday (30 Oct) sparring --- I was winning too ! Anyway I caught the guy with a reverse punch and BAM --- reverse punch right in the face! Its a small fracture and seems to be lined up properly...not disfigured or anything --- the doctor says he doesn't think he'll need to set it and it should heal on its own in 6 weeks. Other than that just pulls and bruises thats about the only serious dojo injury that sent me to a hospital.
  20. I have a friend in Shotokan and seen Bassai --- its different enough that I can't do it after watching him but similiar enough that I knew it was related to our version of Passai without him telling me Clips...hmmm.....thats a good idea! I have a camera but I don't have video editing software --- otherwise I'd swap kata clips with anyone who wanted to.
  21. Style=IsshinRyu Seisan, Seiunchin, Nahanchi, Wansu, Chinto, Sanchin, Kusanku, Sunsu Style= Matsubayashi ShorninRyu Fuyagata Ichi, Fuyagta Ni, Pinan I-V, Nahanchi I-III, Ananku, Wankan, Rohai, Wanshu, Passai Style = Kobiyashi ShorinRyu Gojushiho Style = GojuRyu Seiunchin Style=Yoshikai Seisan
  22. Nahanchi is short and sweet. IsshinRyu only has one, ShorinRyu has Nahanchi shodan, nidan, and sandan
  23. I learned the Matsubayshi ShorinRyu version of Passai last night...that's a very nice kata! I love the sweeping search type moves --- so graceful --- but then there is also explosion and powerful moves! It has elements of Rohai, and Pinan Godan in it too. Thought I'd share
