Your welcome! Stay encouraged...tournaments can be a blast!!!
-
Aw don't get discouraged! Tournaments are a lot of fun and I hope you are still excited about it. The best advice I can give you is to know your kata! Be able to do it facing any direction cause when you are in front of the judges all will be unfamiliar. Announce yourself loudly and bold...but don't scream. Show enthusiam and power. If you make a mistake....don't let it show...keep going. For fighting, make sure you know the rules...what are the legal target areas? Timed fight or first to 5? Gear requirements? Nothing can ruin a good tournament day like getting DQd for not knowing the rules!! Basically go and have fun! Shake hands with the judges and your competitors...make friends and enjoy the day. Let us know how it went! Thanks stl

With no experience you have an advantage in that you can be sucessful in any art provided they start you at the ground level and build upon strong foundations and basics Sometimes when people cross train there is a need to unlearn some things. So I'd suggest checking them both out and see which you like. Akido is a Japanese art that deals with using your opponents enemy against them JuJitsu is more grappling, throwing, locking I don't study either so thats all I can tell you.

discourage - yes forbid - no But like I said --- I respect your position as an instructor and would abide by it if I trained at your school --- I just don't agree -

I'm a Christian and there are certain schools/styles/practices that I wont partipate in...I say this to say if that mother thinks it is wrong, she has the option of training elsewhere....I don't see the point in arguing. I wouldn't use the ki/holy ghost analogy though---I can't imagine that goes over too well. Not ethnocentric....perhaps misinformed.

you talking about in class sparring or real deal fight? We sparred last night -- I beat 3 out of 4 guys I fought. In self defense anything goes....we have one BB who is BIG.....muscular and a lil extra... anyway -- he loves to sneak attack...usually a bear hug.... I regret to say sometimes he has caught me and had that been a real attack I probably wouldn't be here typing this...and other times....well...lets just say I've made him appreciate wearing a cup

lol, I wish someone had told my sensei that last night.... In the leson last night we did Gojushiho Sho and Meikyo all evening (there was just brown & black belts there) and by the end of the lesson I felt in need of a lung transplant I was gasping for breath that much. Gojushiho Sho and Meikyo done after one another at full speed and power really works up a sweat!! We did a kata burn Monday night --- whew!!! Our instuctor starts at the 18th kata and works his way down to the first. I know 15 out of 18 -- so I was feeling the burn. And we usually do each kata at least 2x.

I dont think you should go to class with the intention of meeting people...but if it happens it happens. Thats just my opinion. I will also say this...if I trained at a school that had those rules I would respect them and follow them...but I don't agree with them. -

Its karate class not the military! If we are talking about adults then I don't think it is the business of the instructor. If the students are under 18 then maybe there should be some moderation. I don't think you would ever have to ask to date a BB or anyone else from another school. IMHO -
If he is throwing offensively watch his shoulders / hips.....they'll give you a clue when he is about to execute the kick and you can move accordingly. I prefer the spin hook as a defensive techique

Perhaps the reason the reason there seems[\i] to be so many bad TKD schools is because there are so many TKD schools. If we were to look at percentages[\b] then perhaps the number wouldn't be so high. Example...in upstate NY karate seemed more popular and I've seen my fair share of poor karate dojos Also, TKD is more in the spotlight cause of tournaments and competitions so it is easier to critque than other styles

First of all welcome to the forum!!! I trained 20hrs a week when I was a full time college student --- actually some of those were teaching hrs....but still that was my dojo time. I didn't compete much while in college....only 2 tournys a year. Now I have more time and money and do about 10+ a year. You have to set your priorities....if your grades start to slip give up some competitions!!! As far as suppliments....stay away from Xenadrine...esp if you are taking the one with Ephedra.....do a search on Ephedra / Ephedrine....dangerous stuff. If you are taking the ephedrine free version then....eh! Take a good mega vitamin. I like Womens Mega Vitamin and my male friends love the MegaMen. Also B-complex is good....my karate instructor takes that. Welcome to the board!
