  1. Welcome to KF! Best of luck in your dojo search
  2. Welcome to KF
  3. Good convo! As a student I've seen this many times. As a female assistant instructor I've experienced it first hand. I'll share those experiences but before I do I want to ask: ******** Female Instructors --- is it worse for you? How do you deal with 'macho man'? Share your experiences ******** First whenever a grip is too tight we have the 'tap tap' --- and the other person knows that is a sign to loosen up. Sometimes we just have people that don't know there own strength. Also, we explain to the students that this IS a CLASS environment, and while we try to make it real as possible, we have to a) go slow so he can talk and b) obviously we don't want anyone to get hurt. We've had 'that guy' that thought he could take out the instructor with a tight hold --- what he forgot is in real life you are probably going to get a pop to the groin or a stomp on the foot to loosen up the tight grip! So that is what my instructor had to do. I was impressed by his control cause he popped him enough to loosen him up but didn't hurt him. And held his composure --- I know he was upset. Me personally I've had guys underestimate my teaching ability cause I am female. One guy almost got kicked out of class during team sparring when he yelled to his team mate --- don't get beat by a girl! Well this is the same guy I had to spare. He was a beginner and as a BB I go into training mode --- ya know --- leave openings so they can see them, a light pop upside the head when their guard is down. This guy wanted to annihilate me. I had to fight him like a black belt --- I kinda eyeballed the head instructor afterwards and he couldn't look straight at me cause he was too busy trying not to laugh!!! I guess every school has "that guy" that wants to show up the instructor!
  4. Pronounced in 3 syllables: IS SHIN RYU All schools are different so its only intense you and your instructors allow it to be. Ours varied --- we were in a college town and had a few ROTC students (I was one of them ) --- anyway we wanted the intense workout!!! We also had some older parents that just wanted a lil workout or were doing the family thing and weren't trying to have a heart attack! So what we would do is: a. We had conditioning workshops outside of the regular curriculum --- totally volutary....and those were killer workouts b. sometimes during classes we would do kata burns --- we'd start with the white belt kata and work up to the black belt katas --- the more katas you knew --- the longer you been around and hopefully the better your stamina. When you didn't know the next kata....you had the option to step back or repeat the katas you know There is plenty more that we did to vary the intensity to those that wanted it --- but like I said, my experiences will probably be differnent from yours. Hope you enjoy! IsshinRyu was very rewarding for me!
  5. I transferred from IsshinRyu to ShorinRyu. Its doable....you'll have to learn to punch with a vertical fist and block differently....also, the stances are narrower than what you are used to in Shotokan. There are only 8 empty hand katas in the I-Ryu system --- some schools incorporate there own H and I pattern forms into the curriclum to learn the basics, but the 8 foundation katas are typically harder than those found in other systems. Take Seisan --- its a brown / black belt kata in other styles, but you learn it as a white belt in IsshinRyu. The next kata is Seiunchin, which you should recognize as a goju kata....followed by nahnachi....etc IsshinRyu came from Shorin/Goju Ryu so they'll be things in common.
  6. SS, that is true about the small striking surface being an advantage, but I agree, unless you are in perfect alignment (and still not even guaranteed) that you can break something. But ShorinRyu isnt this like the ShorinRyu front kick with the two-toes (are you Matsubayshi?) I believe it was Anko Itosu that was famous for killing a man from internal bleeding with the penentration of the two-toe kick --- however, I am more a fan of the front kick with the ball of the foot.
  7. I think I understand what you are talking about....IsshinRyu's side kick is done in that formation, but it is withi the SIDE of the HEEL, not so much the side of the foot. Is this what Shotokan is doing?
  8. Is there where you are from or where you are going? I spent 3 months down there back last December. I went to an IshhinRyu club in Ocean Springs when I was down there....it was OK cause I was already a brown belt in I-Ryu but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner --- it was a club of only 4, not really a school. We'll help you look
  9. Where, like Biloxi?
  10. Welcome
  11. Welcome to KF
  12. Welcome!
  13. Looks like it may be gone for good --- says 1995-2004 And has that poem about "I mourn my loss" hmm
  14. Welcome to the wonderful world of karate and karate forums
  15. The two schools I've been a part of its a big deal. There are two ways you can tie it --- but like said above, the end result should be a square knot (some schools are specific as to which way the open end of the knot is pointing) --- and hanging equally. First Way, 1. Put the middle of the belt at your belly button and wrap behind you. You should now be holding 2 equal lengths in front of you. 2. LEFT over RIGHT. Take the top piece and wrap all the way under --- including the piece that should be laying across your belly button 3.RIGHT over LEFT -- just typing the 2 pieces. Pull SIDEWAYS (not down) --- to get that nice square knot. This is the way most people tie belts and this is the way we tie the kids belts --- problem is you start moving around too much it starts to come off and it looks messy in the back the wrap isn't aligned. This is the way we teach our advanced belts: 1. Start with the middle of the belt you around your back. 2. Adjust the belt so there is more on the left than the right. The amount on the right should be just slightly longer than you want it to hang. 3. Take the longer LEFT side, wrap around you and bring back to the LEFT. 4. LEFT OVER RIGHT (tie under all material) 5. RIGHT over LEFT -- just tying the straps
  16. From the site FAQ: Linking to another site phpBB BBCode supports a number of ways of creating URIs, Uniform Resource Indicators better known as URLs. The first of these uses the tag; whatever you type after the = sign will cause the contents of that tag to act as a URL. For example, to link to phpBB.com you could use: [url=http://www.phpbb.com/]Visit phpBB![/url] This would generate the following link, Visit phpBB! You will notice the link opens in a new window so the user can continue browsing the forums if they wish. If you want the URL itself displayed as the link you can do this by simply using: [url]http://www.phpbb.com/[/url] This would generate the following link: http://www.phpbb.com/
  17. You have got to use BB Code
  18. I've never had that problem. When I was studying IsshunRyu in college there was a Kung-Fu class right after us. We were good about getting out of there in time...good thing too --- cause some sememters they were ahead of us and they did the same. Currently there is a Tai-Chi class that comes to my ShorinRyu dojo right after our Saturday class. Once again we are always off the floor so they can start on time. Sometimes our sensei will have to remind us to quiet down --- usually no more of a handful of us dojo rats still there when they are ready to start. In both instances the styles were totally different....anybody ever do this where the style was similiar or identical?
  19. Woohoo!!!! I'm extra excited for you cause I-Ryu was my first art!!! They are sometimes hard to find.
  20. Welcome --- hope you find an MA that suits you. Maybe a grappling art so you can have a rematch with your brother
  21. I'm thinking about it --- I'll probably miss the bluegrass
  22. We WORK hard, We PLAY hard!!! We have a great time....we clown, we joke....but we know when sensei means business. Don't get up there your kata look like slop --- you will get shamed....no longer a joking matter. (My instructor used to be in the military so he will go boot camp in a quick minute!)
