  1. I believe you might be referring to some of the metalic colors in the macho warrior line. Also take a look at a copy of Black Belt magazine. Look through the ads. Many companies now make sparring gear in gold and silver.
  2. There just has to be a balance of the amusing to keep life in order. It is a very good idea to wait a while before approaching an area of the dojo that someone has just quietly backed into, just to stand there for a minute only to leave just as quietly. I shared this thread with a friend who found it highly amusing.
  3. thank you Iamrushman. Taking a physical break from training does not mean Karate starvation. With the help of the wonderful internet, it is possible to learn and research new areas of our art during a physical break. As a mid-40 something I find there are times I do have to take a physical break. Allthough I wonder if this is just a part of my aging process or the ms. Do any other 40 somethings have opinions?
  4. Interesting thread Kickchick. Jack you have rather profound insight for one of your years. I think in many different ways the physical area we live in promotes unhealthy life styles. The kind of people we live and work around also have a strong affect on our patterns of living. It would be very interesting to hear what others do to promote better health given the area and type of people they live around.
  5. The Alex Levitas web site Kicker so promptly posted is the best nunchaku web site I have run across so far. It is a bit difficult to find good Kobudo web sites.
  6. I learned to draw the string back with the first 2 fingers. The thumb was used as an anchor point either behind the jawbone or the ear so that the realease point would be consistend. I remember the inside of my forearm used to turn colors from the bowstring when it was released. I do think there is kind of a natural tendency to hold the breath as the shot is released in the final aiming process.
  7. The Nishiuchi tapes are from Panther productions. They are entitled Mastering the ___________(fill in the weapon's name), by Master Mikio Nishiuchi. I watch my cat get ready to swat things and I think about how the Shotokan tiger relates to using weapons. (Okay so I do think about strange things.) When a cat gets ready to swat the paw is held in and down. When the cat strikes the paw flips rapidly up and developes more power on the down swat. Tonfa kind of work like that. Some techniques involve an up flip into a down strike. Then some just come straight over the top. One big difference between the cat and the tonfa - the cat does not have the powerfull upwards swinging strike a tonfa can generate.
  8. No Kicker blowgun and airgun are not the same. Actually I picked up blowgun several years before I developed an interest in the martial arts. Poison darts hmmmmm. Might be interesting to go after a few local crows with some. Might cause a problem with the local police though. I have recently started seeing paintballs for blowguns. Wonder if I could start a new art style?
  9. Ah g you have not seen very many people smash their emptys against their heads to flatten them have you?
  10. Well , in my Shotokan school we also did kobudo. Our primary weapon was bo (long staff). Getting my black belt with it was great. We also work with Sai, tonfa and nunchaku. After black belt they do some kama as well. Kobudo training can complement karate training very nicely. And it can be a lot of fun.
  11. Shotokan, all right - me too. We will probably then hear a lot from each other - :nod:Kewl.
  12. Hello, hey interesting name. Sai
  13. Hello Ahazmaksya,. Welcome to one of the most interesting martial arts site on the web. If you like to talk about the martial arts this is a wonderful site.
  14. I also add my welcome. Its a great place. Enjoy Sai
  15. Hmmm, am I hooked on the internet? Well YES. Are others in here hooked? Hey if they weren't would this site be so much fun. What are my 2 main activities in life? Karate and the internet. I can't believe I didn't see this one sooner.
  16. I just found this thread. :lol:My companion is a very shy black cat named Shadow. We have been together since she was a tiny kitten. She is 5 now. Shadow's least favorite thing about my Karate is the noise I make when I work on my punching bag. Her favorite thing is to help me tie my belt.
  17. :spitlaugh:Well, much as I hate to admit it I am 44. Seriously though, some days I feel 84 and some days I feel 14. :bdaybiggrin:One thing though I hope I never grow up all the way. It must be terribly boring to be serious all the time.
  18. Favorite to watch or participate? In my younger days I was involved with softball, tennis and volleyball. I started running to get in shape for tennis and kept running when I quit playing tennis. Now, besides Martial Arts, I like to watch soccer and gymnastics. To particiapte - well, I play a very bad game of racketball.
  19. Hey this sounds interesting. I will follow this with interest.
  20. Hey TKD, I was roaming and went into a thread and lo and behold my belt went orange too. Hey, it is cool. The expression and discusion of the issues is even cooler.
  21. I have enjoyed this thread. It brought back pleasant memories of my time in Korea. They do have different ways of making different speech sounds than we do. It can become amusing or expasperating. Occasionally someone trying to get back to post after an adventure in another part of the country would pronounce the name of the village the way we thought everyone did at the ticket counter in the bus station. Well, sometimes that didn't work too well. People would wind up in a villege with a similar sounding name in anothor part of the country. Much safer to head toward Osan and go to Pyong Taek from their and then to get on the K-6 bus in Pyong Taek. All kidding aside, Korea is rich with martial arts tradition and lore.
  22. Everyone developes their favorite stretching techniques. We are all built differently with varying amounts of natural flexibility. Try reading different books on stretching and try different techniques. The Whartons Stretch Bood is an interesting book. They approach stretching from a different point of view of many. Actually I achieved full splits in a manner similar to KickChick except I never placed a bowl of popcorn in front of myself. I have stretched out with a bood though.
  23. I was thinking about breaking after I read the braking thread in the Tae Kwon Do section and remembered something. The man in the power breaking championship on ESPN who dislocated his shoulder (and immediately had someone pop it right back into place) has also been a speed breaking champion. Also, in the family, his wife competed one year in the creative breaking division. Their style is Issh-in ryu. Hey some of the Issh-in ryu people have reall kick butt attitudes when it comes to their training. And they look and seem like such mild mannered people.
  24. One of the reasons organizations (of any sort) wear uniforms is to promote a sense of identity to the group and uniformity within the group. Everyone in the same uniform is important. Yes there can be some snobbery in some who insistet on wearing expensive name brand gi's. But an outsider looking in does not see the brand patches. All an outsider sees is a unified group of people. A bit of lore on how whites are kept white in areas without bleach and fancy washers. All chothes are hung up to dry. If the white clothes are not clean looking (if stains and such are still visible) the garment is rewetted and hung back up. As many times as necessary to return to an acceptable state of whiteness. I used to wonder how places in the world where they wear a lot of white allways looked white not gray or dingy. Sometimes low tech is good.
  25. Thank you Jack. I will very definately explore that site. Gosh, I am learning a lot in here.
