  1. So on this the day of the National Smoke Out has anyone made any progress throwing out their butts?
  2. This is not martial arts related but i think anyone who has found this thread amusing will appreciate it. From: Coco Ikehara subject: Happy thanksgiving Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 This is too funny! The only friction in their marriage was the husbands habit of farting loudly every morning when he woke. The noise would wake his wife and the smell would make her eyes water and make her gasp for air. Every morning she would plead with him to stop ripping them off because it was making her sick. He told her that he couldn't stop and that it was perfectly natural. She told him to see a doctor: she was concerned that one day he would blow his guts out. The years went by and he continued to rip them out! Then one Thanksgiving morning. as she was preparing the Turkey for dinner and he was still upstairs sound asleep, she looked at the bowl where she had put the turkey innards and neck, gizzard, liver and all the spare parts and a malicious thought came to her. She took the bowl and went upstairs where her husband was sound asleep and gently pulling back the bedcovers she pulled back the elastic waistband of his shorts and emptied the bowl of turkey guts into his shorts. Some time later she heard her husband waken with his usual trumpeting which was followed by a blood curdling scream and the sound of frantic footsteps as he raced to the bathroom. The wife could hardly control herself as she rolled on the floor laughing, tears in her eye. After all the years of torture she reckoned she had got her own back. About twenty minutes later, her husband came downstairs in his blood stained shorts with a look of horror on his face. She bit her lip as she asked what was the matter. "Honey you were tight. All those years you warned me and I didn't listen to you." He said. "what do you mean," asked his wife. "Well you always told me that one day I would end up farting my guts out and today it finally happened. But by the grace of God, some Vaseline and these two fingers, I think I got most of them back in." This was sent to me by a friend. So guys watch yourself this Thanksgiving. Make sure those turkey innards don't end up someplace they were never meant to be. And when someone emits flatus in class try not to think about "farting out your insides".
  3. Gee Bagpuss I feel like my eyes do that too. Seriously I got my windows xp disks the other day and I can't stand to be parted from my computer long enough for someone who knows how to do it better than I, to install them.
  4. Nice to know there are still shy people out there. I think I would have been a bit intimidated too.
  5. Hmmm, not back up. Good idea Kickbutt. One test I will never forget, I had to spar with someone I thought was really trying to kill me. She just kept coming and coming. I had not been sparring very long at the time. I had no idea what to do then. I just kept throwing high front kicks to make her back off a bit. Turned out she had not had anyone throw kicks that high at her that much. I will never forget that test. Next test I was ready for her.
  6. Korea is a fascinating place. I spent a year there. The people possess and industriesness that we in America don't even come close to. When I come into this forum I sit still and remember. One of the memories that sticks with me is the first time I saw the martial arts group in the 332nd barracks out for their evening run, barefoot in white uniforms.
  7. Jack I believe in Okinawa, Japan and Korea belts were worn because they had not buttons. Their belts kept the top layer closed. The pants had drawstrings. Yes, belts are often carried to an excessive amount of commercialisation. But tell me now. will anyone not admit to feeling pride when warded a new belt, particularly one they worked very hard to get?
  8. Well said Hanksohn. We too were taught not to fight just to give up the wallet.
  9. Welcome to the boards Hanksohn. I have heard it said that a person with about 2 years of training is possibly the most dangerous. They know enough to get into trouble with. Crosstraining without a good base is bound to cause problems.
  10. I am interested in finding out which katas different groups learn after the Heian katas. And also, if maybe the order of the Heian katas are broken in order by the insertion of additional katas.
  11. Tobias I have been looking at several katas in more detail recently. It seems differences abound. For example I have found at least 10 ways different Shotokan groups do Bassai Dai. All of the ways are obviously Bassai Dai and most of the differences are small. But it is amazing how many groups do moves in different stances at the same points in the katas. In a way it seems each "expert" who broke from their master added their own touches to what they learned. Rivalry among groups also spawned differences. It is really interesting. I am not looking for my own style or anything, just a way to do my katas to the best of my abilities. I kind of think by looking around and seeing how others do the same thing I might gain a bit of insight.

  13. Hmmm. the complaints and the whines all seem to come about the same kind of exercises regardless of the martial art practiced. Very interesting. Apparently everyone sooner or later gets introduced to the dreaded squat kick. Six years of trying to do pushups and mine still suck. Oh well. At least I try. Aww kickbuttnat I do know what you mean. There are some definate inconveniences about being a girl.
  14. Kicker have you tried raising one hand higher to protect your head? Do you notice you are more vulnerable to this on one side than the other? Knee to the thigh - vicous - are you moving in and out of range?
  15. Kickbutt I just wandered into this forum for the first time. I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I think we all wonder if anyone ever else has the same problem. I appreicate many of the responses that have been given. I will give thought and trial to those I can. I do have a technique that sometimes really does happen accidentally. I step on their feet in the process of trying to step forward. (I really do have a bit of a problem with knowing exactly where they are in space sometimes) We have a girl who beats the daylights out of the black belts using the same techniques you are describing kickbutt. She uses her size against them. Your post has made me more aware of watching her so that I can learn what works best against her. I have to spar with her too sometimes.
  16. Yes Dreamer I do wear white footpads too. More as a matter of matching the rest of my gear though.
  17. Thanks everyone. I have gone through literally hundreds of web sites sifting through information. Shotokan info is relatively easy to find. Kobudo info well most sites don't really say much.
  18. Hi Phantom, this is a great board. Welcome. Have fun browsing in all the topics.
  19. What a way do express manly prowess.
  20. I embarrased the daylights out of myself playing a demo version of Age of Empires in an on-line game room. I think that is one of the hottest strategy games going now isn't it? Maybe I should redownload the demo and try again.
  21. Wow, guys Kickchick, the whole thing just seems so hard to comprehend. I was half way through a Tom Clancey book the 11th. Didn't finish it.
  22. My first mask was a closed chin mask (all of our kids used to have to wear the closed chin ones). With my goggles I was always steamed up (the lenses) and could not see a thing. I got another more open helmet and was much happier. The other thing with the closed chin helmet was it did restrict visibility even before my lenses fogged up. Actually I think the color of sparring gear does make a difference. In some ways it is nice to express individuality. But, I think my white handpads are harder to pick up against my white gi.
  23. Taezee you and Rushman see my question. (I think) I really am beginning to wonder how other people adjust or adapt things to fit their abilities. It does seem that those who have stuck it out and gone farther are rather self contained about the accomplishments they have made. The most accomplished martial artists I have seen are also many times the most modest.
  24. Thanks kicker. Maybe others also do a lot of searching.
  25. Actually I am in a Shotokan school. We do Rohai as a result of a prior association with a Hayash- ai hai Shi-to ryu group. In time Rohai will be phased out of our curriculum. The point I am thinking of as a jumping kick towards the end of the kata (going towards the back of the room) may also be viewed as a double kick. The more I look at information and the further along I go in Karate the more I see that some of the splits among karate pioneers in the past result in a lot of difference now among practitioners of the same style. We have one guy in the dojo who loves to practice Heian godan by jumping over a chair at that point in the kata. Hey, he jumps over grocery cart's in the store too. Or so says his mother. Seriously, as I stay involved in karate I do run into things from time to time that are more difficult than other's for me to execute well. I do things now I never imagined that I would be able to do 6 years now. At times I do find the challange a bit frustrating, but on the whole I love the challange more.
