  1. Nope Jiggy, that's what happens when your hand eye coordination isn't the best. Or you get distracted because you've just seen the kid next to you out of the corner of your eye and realized he is too close. Actually I think everyone whacks themself with the nunchakus when they start working with them.
  2. Congratulations. Sounds like a busy day and a fine showing.
  3. Some of the older styles of "kickboxers" (not muy thai but when karate first was coming to the public eye and sportscasters miscalled it) used a fighting stance looking like horse stance. Like Jiggy said they did not face their opponent head on but to the side. The most recent example of this I have seen televised on espn was a fight with Don "the Dragon" Wilson.
  4. Greetings. Sneak is an interesting name. Is there a story behind it?
  5. Mashed potatoes and pizza, interesting. Some how I to thought your name meant Connecticut. Oh well, never assume anything. Assumptions only make and ass of u and me. Greetings anyway.
  6. WOW there is a truely massive amount of information in this thread. This will require many revisist to even attempt to digest a part of.
  7. Thanks for all the informations ChangWuJi. When I was in Korea in 1976 I started working a bit with Pa Kua, and was recently considering the possibility of picking it back up. I remember there were 8 basic movements with a seemingly infinate number of applications.
  8. I just wondered into this topic for the first time and saw this thread and said to mayself , "I gotta' read this one first". I have had a lot of trouble with my lower back tightening up especially when I have been standing. One of the things that helps me loosen up is to sort of squat down and gently let the vertabrae relax a little at a time by adjusting the curve of my back and how far forward I stretch my hands. I find this really uselfull in a store. I just kind of squat down and inspect something on the bottem shelf. It's like sometimes I get so tight it is painful to bend over to sit down in the car.
  9. Adult: A person who has stopped growing at both ends and is now growing in the middle.
  10. Hi Jackmak, thanks for sharing your story. I have had torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders before I started karate. My training helped with that too. I tore my shoulders pushing my manual wheelchair in earlier days when the ms was causing extreme limitations. You know I have yet to encounter anyone with a problem who hasn't been helped in some way by training in a martial art.
  11. Wow, that is a pretty impressive workout plan, considering you are also continuing your martial arts training at the same time. You might want to add a rest day in before you start the cyle again. Benching heavy without a spotter is not a good idea as proviously pointed out. Many solve this problem by doing dumbell bench presses. Some of the quys in my gym prefer the dumbell presses all the time. They make the supporting muscles work even harder. Also don't forget rotator cuff training. Many who bench heavy develope shoulder problems becuause of neglecting this vital point. Good luck.
  12. No Bruce I have never had my nunchaku cords get tangled, twisted or wrapped. And actually, I don't think I have ever seen that happen to anyone in class either. Now as to swatting myself with them that's another matter.
  13. Jiggy that was a very interesting tale. I think most of us wonder at the deep stances from time to time, usually in the middle of class when we have been in one for what seems to be forever. Many things we do in karate that are seemingly a bit odd are referred to as "good training". Kicking requires leg strengt. Many things require balance. I am finding that the longer that I do this the more little light bulbs go off. Or that the explanations of others make more sense. For me the deeper stances aided my every day ambulation. I need not ask any more why's than that.
  14. You know it will be interesting to have this game start on a holiday weekend. Good luck to both team.
  15. Hey Nat we have a holiday weekend coming up. Hope you have some time then to come in and enlighten us with your wisdom. I do remember how busy it gets working while in college.
  16. Kickchick I was wandering which tread to look at to see how your son did. Tell him congratulations. I am sure both of you feel very relieved. And proud.
  17. Hi Gloi and welcome to the fourm. One of my problems is also asthma. It takes me longer to recover my breath too. I find it helpful to use my inhaler before class or an aerobic session. I don't have the ability to run because of the ms so I do most of my aerobic work on an elliptical trainer or a stationary bike. When I am practicing kata I do one at normal speed and then do one at slow speed to catch my breath but still keep my heart rate moving. When I do the slow kata I work extra hard on the movement precision and my stances.
  18. Hi Henning strenght work can be done in short sessions with split routines just working one muscle group at a time. Many people do a push-pull split. Doing chest, triceps and shoulders in one split and legs, biceps and back in the other split. To balance the back muscles chinups are quick and a good balance to pushups. With weights lat pulldowns and rowing. If you gym has a back extension bench that would be helpful to you as well.
  19. That is interesting Doug. When you draw the bowstring across your chest to you use an anchor point for reference? Also, do you pull the string back or push the bow forward?
  20. Jiggy faster is cooler. Bruce if you go to traditional wood nunchaku with the rope the weight will be closer to that of your foam nunchaku with the chain. And the rope is more traditional. Of course it all depends on if your work is of a more traditional sort with basic strikes or of a more modern flashy nature. Either way when you get used to them the nunchaku with the cord will make a unique sound when swung at speed.
  21. I asked because I am really curious. My group does an odd combination of katas. We do not currently do the Tekki's. After the Heians we do Jutte, Jiin and Jion, then Rohai. And yes, I know that doesn't much sound like a Shotokan lineup. After that then it gets more traditional with Bassai Dai and Kank Dai. I appreciate everyones response.
  22. Interesting technique Kickchick. I will give it a try. Except I may need to hang on to something for balance (mine is atrocious). I think I will still get the strength benefits from the exercise. And if I am just next to something to grab I WILL work balance too.
  23. Hello Henning welcome to one of the greatest sites on the web. Hope you enjoy the postings as much as I do. :bdaybiggrin:Always nice to meet another Shotokaner. Sai
  24. I got in okay and had a nice chat with Kickchick. It will be nice to talk directly to everyone.
