Yes Kickchick. Any degree from 100% art and no physicality to 0%art and 100%physicality. Personally I think my own workouts vary with the intention I have when I start training that day. Some times I train kata full out as a physical activity. Some days I train kata as more of an art to perform it to the best of my ability and to think about the intent of the motions.
-
In their love of the art many try to learn as much as they can as quick as they can. Some think that if they don't learn a new kata every 3 months or so they are not learning and their teacher is not teaching them anything new.
-
I see two issues here. One is about instructors who do not teach new techniques over time. The other is over time does a student begin to feel complacent and start feeling stale. If you are in a dojo where you feel you are not learning and not progressing because of and instructor who is not teaching anymore it is perhaps best to go find a new dojo. I really have not heard the second issue being expressed.

There have been some very good responses given. Remember that one technique can have multiple applications. And any serious student will begin to see more and more ways to use that technique as they learn.

White belt or Black belt
SaiFightsMS replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
There is another thread about this topic in the Shotokan section. For those who have not seen it allready it might be worth looking at. Or for everyone else maybe refreshing our thougts on the subject. -
Let's bring this up again. It sort of came up in the General Karate section.

You raise some very interesting points, oh Annonymousone. (by the way welcome to the fourm) Bucking tradition will not be easy. The way you are analyzing things is extremely interesting. I sincerely hope you come in often and have many interesting threads going in here with those who care to respond. -
You know, I never introduced myself...

Welcome Three60 this is a pretty cool site, Oh, by the way, no one can waste my time telling me they like martial arts. Sai :pony: -
Well I got a really great one but I cannot tell it here until i figure out how to get past a part that is a bit of an x-rating. So Instead there is a small plane carrying the Dali LLama, Bill Gates, Micheal Jordan, and a hippie. The pilot comes out of the ****pit and announces that the plane is going down and that he couldn't stop it and that there are only 4 parachutes. The pilot grabs one and jumps. Micheal Jordan stands up grabs a parachute and says "I am the greatest athlete in the world I am needed." and jumps. Two parachutes remain and three people. Bill Gates jumps up grabs a parachute and says I am the smartest person in the world and the world needs smart people. Two people remain and one parachute. The Dali LLama tells the young hippie I have lived a long life and am not afraid to die you take the parachute and jump. The hippie says well the smartest man in the world just grabbed my backpack and jumped let's both take these parachutes and jump.

I have a very poor metabolism and sometimes my system just doesn't break things down like it is supposed to. So I pretty much just use a multi vitamin. I generally get either a powder of a chewable. I have to take enough presctiption meds to rattle with out adding a lot of other pills to the load. I do like to add an easy to digest form of a liquid protein though.

Such wisdom Gloi. It helps if everyone has the same dictionary too. I had a 5th grade teacher that would not let us say yeah or ain't. Would love to see her in a game of scrabble with the dictionary as the final judge of whether or not it is a word. Because they are both is the dictionary.

I like to watch freestyle skiing. When They first started to do flips in the middle of jumps I thought wow. Can you imaging doing a flip with skis on.

Do you see it?

No one ties up my cat! :kaioken: Tradition for the sake of tradition is not allways such a great thing. -
It is something only those who have been pushed hard will be able to appreciate I think. Much of who and what we are stems from what we see and what is done to and around us. There are many forms of monstors in today's world. And many types of abysses.

Weaopons training fun? Heck yes if not would be knock ourselves out to continue learning and practicing.

Actually that is a good question. A naginita is not just a long weapon it has a blade on one end. I have to admit I have not seen one in any sites yet offered in 2 pieces. I never thought about the problem of transporting one. The regular bo case would definately not be suitable because of the blade.

Congratulations Tobias to you and your fellow students. Yoda most of the time when we do one on one offense/defense type moves with weapons it is at the higher kyu grades. Ho jundo with weapons, as in Karate, is very importand in learning basic skills. One cannot learn to fight or defend oneself until some mastery with basic skills is obtained. Some weapons lend themselves to be studied for self defense. While others generate a passion just for working with them. It is true that a situation where one will find themself out on the street with a kobudo type weapon is highly unlikely.

And then it depends on what you are looking for and why? Like what you hope to get out of it? It is possible to get written directions for all 26 kata of the shotokan canon. As well as video clips on the net. One word though too much information at one time does result in overload. And to really make use of most of this information you need a basis built first of the type generally only offered by formal instruction.

I am finding it interesting that the longer a person has done karate the more likely they are to prefer a heavier gi. Do you also derive a sense of pride from keeping your gi as white as possible? Or do you have a sense of reverance for odd stains that may have developed over time?

Utilizing the hips to add power to kicks and punches is one of the basic concepts in Shotokan.
-
People are often surprised when they attempt to throw one of their favorite head level kicks, that is such a beauty in the dojo, only they are now in their civvies. And the flexibility is impeded by the fit of their pants.

Hello and welcome Yoda Sounds like you can contribute a lot. Hope to see your posts.
