  1. I think it is an unfortunate fact of life that many school systems turn out students woefully short of basic knowledge. Retention of "good" teachers is a big problem. Pay is a part of that problem and yes a big part. Other things such as benefits and working conditions also play a role. There are some areas that unless public education is improved will no longer be able to produce new nurses and medical professionals.
  2. Yes, and aren't there also some martial arts schools giving free lessons to airline personnal?
  3. Kickchick, Angus, well you might guess I would be the one to have seen this phenonon in class. In a regular aerobics class. Everyone just kind of ignored the "situation" and it went away. Or should I say down.
  4. How many mice does it take to change a light bulb? Mice don't change light bulbs. They are to large and cumbersome to handle and it is much safer to pilfer food in the dark.
  5. Dwight the dwarf digs deep deep holes drawing dwarf patterns during digging.
  6. At least I am not the only one who is confused. There is a bit of comfort in numbers. Jiggy I do appreciate your comments.
  7. In Okinawa, there is a very poisonous pit viper called habu. Happily, its bite is no longer quite the fearsome thing that it was in my younger days when, if a person was bitten on hand or foot, the only way to save his life was immediate amputation. Now an effective serum has been developed, but it must be injected as soon as possible after the bite. Our Okinawan habu, which grows to a length of six or seven feet, is still a good beast to avoid. Back in the old days before the development of the serum, I went one night to the house of Master Azato for a karate practice session. This occurred several years after my marriage, and I asked my eldest son, then in primary school, to accompany me and carry the little lantern that lighted our way through the island night. I had, naturally, often seen habu before, but never until that night had I seen one coiled to strike. Knowing, as every Okinawan does, their unpleasant habits, I very much doubted that it would slither off quite so submissively without making even an attempt to attack, so- terribly frightened though I was-I held the lantern in front of me as I crept into the field in scarch of the snake. Part 2 to come later.
  8. Excellant tips Egarlock. The more I learn about weapons the more weapons I see that have muti-use aspects. And the more addictive the dedication to weapons arts.
  9. While I was looking for something else on the net yesterday I found a site that had a reference to a yubibo. However, the picture did not display. Anyone have any idea what a yubibo is? Or what it looks like?
  10. In addition to what Bon said. Any question asked in open forum will benefit others as well. We like questions here.
  11. Here is another link to a clip of Jitte from Kansas City Shotokan Club. http://www.kc-karate.com/karate/kata/jutte.htm And katas being spread all over Asia as the martial arts are the Korean's call this kata: Ship Su, Ja Soo or Sip Soo. Ah Karateka the discussion about kata never ends. It is possible to do a kata for years and then suddenly have a light bulb go off and see new aspects to the kata.
  12. Just today I was as I was reading posts in another site someone was describing their injury. It seems that while sparring in a bone connecting with bone conflict a piece of his shinbone about an inch in size was removed from the rest of the bone. This guy wants to continue training. And says he is still fully mobile!!
  13. Excellant tips. It is all to easy for those who practice and "eastern" martial art to "write off" boxing and any other "wester" way of fighting as well. I find it interesting that Ali's old training camp is retrofitted as a karate camp now.
  14. I did a search on beards and Islam. It seems the Quran has nothing to say about the subject of beards. The beard thing developed later as a way to distinguish themselves from the "pagans". However, the article neglected to mention the period in history this was developed in as well as which pagans they were referring to. There does seem to be debate among members of Islam about the beard issue. It is not a cut and dried thing. I still want to know which pagans they were referring too though.
  15. I had another thought about the third sai. It seems to me like by the time a person is seriously working on san cho sai they are pretty committed to working with the sai. So maybe many are ready to commit to getting a "good pair". Or maybe to get another pair so that they can take the old ones outside and bang them up practicing throws but still have nice looking sai for demo purposes. My second set I like very much. One of the things I find I am really liking is that they are not chrome finished. I find without the chrome I have much better control over techniques involving interlocking the sai.
  16. Sorry Gloi, I tried. I have seen speculation that all three "respect" katas, jutte, jiin and jion, may have at one time been one kata such as naihanchi or tekki was once one kata. Reactions? Opinions?
  17. Hoot Hoot the hoot howl hooted who who is here Hoot Hoot says who who is here Hoot Hoot hoots.
  18. Signs You Live In The Year 2002 1. You just tried to enter your password on the microwave. 2. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three. 3. You call your son's beeper to let him know it's time to eat. He emails you back from his bedroom, "What's for dinner?" 4. Your daughter sells Girl Scout Cookies via her web site. 5. You chat several times a day with a stranger from South Africa, but you haven't spoken with your next door neighbor this year. 6. You check the ingredients on a can of chicken noodle soup to see if it contains Echinacea. 7. Your grandmother asks you to send her a JPEG file of your newborn so she can create a screen saver. 8. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home. 9. Every commercial on television has a web-site address at the bottom of the screen. 10. You buy a computer and 6 months later it is out of date and now sells for half the price you paid. (if you are lucky) 11. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 years of your life, is cause for panic and turning around to go get it. 12. Using real money, instead of credit or debit, to make a purchase would be a hassle and take planning. 13. Cleaning up the dining room means getting the fast food bags out of the back seat of your car. 14. Your reason for not staying in touch with family is that they do not have e-mail addresses. 15. You consider second-day air delivery painfully slow. 16. Your dining room table is now your flat filing cabinet. 17. Your idea of being organized is multiple-colored Post-it notes. 18. You hear most of your jokes via e-mail instead of in person. 19. You get an extra phone line (or a ADSL/cable modem) so you can get phone calls. 20. You disconnect from the Internet and get this awful feeling, as if you just pulled the plug on a loved one. 21. You get up in morning and go online before getting your coffee. 22. You wake up at 2 am to go to the bathroom and check your E-mail on your way back to bed. 23. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. 24. You're reading this. 25. Even worse; you're going to forward it to someone else
  19. I did see a feature today on MSNBC. It seem that allthough the Cubans realize that there island home has become the prison of some extremely nasty prisoners they have no fear of them. It seems that the area around that part of Cuba is heavily land mined. I am sure the presence of so many land mines will make the prisoners feel right at home. And by now the beards are reqrowing.
  20. Wow and that school also trained olympians. Would it be that all schools could produce such great students. Makes me wonder how to more effectively include a bit of moral responsibility training in the martial arts.
  21. Okay how about inquisitiveness. Do you like students to ask questions?
  22. It has been a while since this has been seen. Maybe someone else has something to add at this point. I am sure there are maybe a few who have not seen this yet. And hey remember small weapons can be very serious.
  23. No Tobias I have not yet seen anyone spear their own, or anyone elses, foot by accident. One of the first moves many learn at a sai seminar is to jump and get their bare feet out of the way when they drop a sai. Last spring when the neibhbors were digging up the ground to set out their gardens I thought about going outside and practicing throws. Then I thought about how close to a police station I live and how much I didn't want to visit it. So I did not go outside to practice.
  24. Yes Joe they are. There are so many weapons used in martial arts it would be nearly impossible to learn proficiency with all of them.
