  2. Computer Jokes - Dr. Seuss Computer Manual If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report! If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icons put your window in the trash, And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash! If the label on your cable on the gable at your house, Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, But your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall. And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang! When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk, And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC, The you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom!
  3. Wonder what the consequenses of ripping out a pair of pants while trying them on are?
  4. The speedball gives you a stationary target that does not require a partner to see how well you target head level kicks. Shear frustration at first no matter what you are doing. Intense satisfaction when you finally manage to hit the thing 5 or 6 times in a row. After you get the targeting and timing down it is a type of upper body endurance work out. _________________ KarateForums Sempai Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-04-20 12:25 ]
  5. Here is something on the origin of the shotokan tiger. The Tiger on Our Patch Ever wonder about where the tiger on our Shotokan patch originated? There are two main stories to explain its beginning. One story has a nice feel of lore about it; the other is a bit colder and more practical. For those who like lore: When Master Funakoshi was a young man he like to walk in a pine forest near his home. At night after working and training hard all day he would walk up Mt. Torao and meditate among the pines. He would look up at the moon and the stars. He would listen to the wind. He enjoyed the cool breezes blowing through the trees. He listened to the wind. He thought the wind coming through the trees sounded like the ocean waves breaking in upon the shore. This is where the poet inside him received its greatest inspiration. He like it so much, he chose ?Shoto? for his pen name. Shoto means pine waves. Mt. Torao is a very narrow, heavily wooded mountain. From a distance it looks like a tiger?s tail. So when you look at the patch you see a tiger. And at the tigers tail you see a little mark representing a scroll of poetry. The colder more practical explanation came about with the publication of a book. It comes from the expression ?tora no maki? which means the official written document of an art or a system. There was a famous artist named Hoan Kosugi who was also involved in the development and spread of Shotokan karate in Japan. He encouraged Master Funakoshi to write a book and came up with the tiger as a painting for the book cover. It is a traditional Chinese design with a special meaning ?the tiger never sleeps?. This tiger symbolizes the alertness of the tiger and the peace Master Funakoshi had in his mind when he was listening to pine waves on Tigers Tail Mountain. Whether or not you like the lore story or the more practical explanation it is still easy to appreciate the symbol with its multiplicity of meaning. In a way isn?t that like karate do itself? There are multiple levels to everything we learn in the dojo.
  6. We wear the simple orange and black patch with the orange tiger in a black circle. Over the circle is the kanji for shotokan.
  7. How about opening the fridge with a gentle sweep? Or waiting for the micro wave to beep standing in crane stance? Or making sure when you try on pants you can throw a kick in them?
  8. I too came out Fozzie. Is there a trend developing or do we all have a lot in common?
  9. I gave it a try and came out at 42%. I have to admit that I am pretty easy going in a lot of situations when others start grumbling. I have had a lot of practice waiting on things I have absolutely no control over.
  10. Is being considered a threat a good thing
  11. Driving to the office this morning on the Interstate, I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Mustang doing 65 miles per hour with her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her eyeliner! I looked away for a couple seconds and when I looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup!!! It scared me (I'm a man) so bad, I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs, splashed and burned Big Jim and the Twins, ruined the darn phone and DISCONNECTED AN IMPORTANT CALL!!!!!!! Darn woman drivers. Yeah right.
  12. Hey I used to have a space pen. Wonder what the Russians did with the pencil shavings and the problem with the way pencil tends to blur.
  13. Sounds interesting I will run through it a few times.
  14. Someone just came in that I think will enjoy this. Thought I would bring it up again for all those who have not seen.
  15. Welcome to the forum. Somewhere around here is a post called the martial fart I think you will enjoy.
  16. Actually I can't think of any adverse effect I have ever had from stretching. I can think of plenty though from not maintaining an adequate amount of flexiblity.
  17. Anyone who is serious about their marial training should be doing much more than just going to class. Besides practicing their forms and techiniques on their own all should be doing flexibility, aerobic, and strength work. The training routine should be devised to include everything and in some sort of a balance. There have been a lot of threads in here where indviduals talk about their own training routines. It really is important. And one routine for everyone does not work. Neither does one routine for all time.
  18. I never really thought of having a weaons collection to take pride in. Actually since they came on one at a time it is the learning to use them that generated deep feelings of satisfaction inside me.
  19. Cool. I think in many ways one does not truly "learn" their martial art until you see applications within the forms that make them come alive for you.
  20. During a time in the history of Okinawa when martial things were illegal kata's were devised to preserve the practice. They were performed as court and folk dances.
  21. There are many branches of shi-to ryu. The founder left no clear successor. So his senior students rather than reach a concensus each went their own separate way. There are others who visit this forum who have also studied shi-to ryu.
  22. No Mike I haven't heard of it but it does sound very interesting. Can you describe it? I find working with elbow strikes to be very usefull in helping to keep my shoulders loosened up. Many times there are katas that have been developed for use inside a school to work or practice things that the sensei considers important that are not covered to their satisfaction in any other form.
  23. A predefined attack and response. Used to help learn distancing and control.
  24. Oh, I see. I enjoy espn2's coverage of the X games every year. My favorite event is inline street skating.
