Well, things do happen. Hey Yoday which one did you miss? Was it the one about the endurance cyclist? I had a vague memory about watching someting about the Race Across America.

There is a technique for swinging the nunchaku in a loop to slow down the speed and keep it under control. It seems kind of weird to learn it as part of a kata but doing it live bouncing off a targer made it come to life.

Mike don't worry it is the built in censor to screen out obscenities. KarateForums makes an effort to be the highest quality possible. And profanity and obscenities are not professional. Actually most who have studied shi-to ryu write it like that in here. Not to pull someting over on the censor but to clarify what the syle is more precisely. I studied Hayashi Ha Shi-to ryu before going into shotokan.

I like that g95. Sometimes the idea that kata is just a place to start goes right in one ear and out the other. The other thing is kata that has really grabbed me lately is kosa dachi. It could be hiding a turn to a different direction. Watch someone do a militairy about face. Then have them do it on 2 counts. Then stop on the first cound and bend the knees. what are they doing? And are the kicks in the tekki's front kicks, crescent kicks, stomp kicks or something else? It is fascinating how many things a deceptively simple move can hide.

The roots all come from the same place. I find that when I look for similarities I learn more. The more different ways to see the same thing done the more likely it is that a bell will go off inside the head .

Welcome to the forum. Maybe one day I will figure out what I am the master of.

I'll have to check out WarCraft. Currently I spent all night in the labyrniths of Diablo. I have a 19th level warrior in level 9 of the dungeon who is having one heck of a time with the stone creatures.

You should really look under Internal Training for this area of discussion.

I can remeber passing the sections of Lord of the Rings around during study hall while I was in high school. No matter how many times I have read it since then how is it possible to keep track of all the interconnected lore?

Sounds like a good idea from Yoda. Roc it sounds like you are learning a good base then. Kihon kumite is usually the precursor to free sparring. Although many disagree some think it is a good idea to develope a base like that before beginning free sparring. In Shotokan usually we learn the Heians, tekki shodan (at least), Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai then on to other katas that vary from school to school (in terms of order learned). Kyokushkin is also very similar.

From our earliest days in training we were taught step to the angle to block then counter attack.

Importance of Breaking (a minor worry)
SaiFightsMS replied to Eric-TKD's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
You would be amazed at the number of times I have seen students miss the board they were aiming at. Not everone taking a martial art is a gifted athlete. Increased coordination is one of the benefits some gain when training. -
Actually there are some judo forms. And some akido schools have froms as well.

There are many off=shoots of shotokan. Are you learning the traditional shotokan katas or are there additonal katas? What is the empahsis on kata, kihons and kumite in your school? We may have a lot more in common than differences.

Theorectically (sp) the tester should be 3 full grades higher than the rank the student is testing for.

I have never heard of a tradional Japanese/Okinawan karate style that does not practice kata. It is usually renegade clubs who do not belong to associations or claim to be a tradition based style that would not do kata.
-
The minimun time between shodan and nidan varies between schools. Some schools it is as little as 1 year. Some it is up to 7 years. It is the association or the club that sets the guidelines there is no universal answer.

Question for all Black Belts (real black belts)
SaiFightsMS replied to Kyle Bryant's topic in Karate
In the US there is no national black belt standard. Anyone who wishes to open a school can do so. And this issue does cause a lot of discussion. For the most part if you are part of an association it is there rules you must follow. -

One of my pet peeves is the attitude many display toward physically disabled people who are accomplishing anything. To some "Oh, you are such an inspiration." Yeah right, we are only doing what anyone wants to do. And the other side is when some of us are trying to do things and have trouble with them. Then the idiots think "Poor dears shouldn't be trying to do things beyond their abilities." It is what is between your ears that matters in college not whether or not you are sitting in a wheel chair at graduation. For all of us we grow by trying to do things that are just a bit beyond our current abilities. That is life. Disablity has nothing to do with it. Just my rant.

What kind of a car are you? Say are you a classic 65 Mustang lovingly maintained to better than showroom condition with a powerfull engine and a spotless paintjob. Are you a rusted out Chevy Chevette with holes in the floorboard and doors, broken headlights and a seriously under powered eginge that rarely fires on all 4 cylinders. How about I am a Model T Ford. I am a revolutionary that helped change the world. I am still here in near mint condition. I was found in an old barn and lovingly restored and am a valued museum piece. So what kind of car are you?
