Tricks for quickly disabling an opponent.
The Saint replied to WhiteDragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Are you really looking to open pandoras box.........................? Avoid fighting, but if nessasry a full power roundhouse kick to the back of the leg works well. As for going to court, if you only strike once it is considered reasonable force. You just have to show that it was neccesarry to use an offesive move to justify the strike to the joint. This is the toughest thing to prove. I have always questioned "what would I do if..." and there is always different factors I would look at. If a guy out wieghs me by 100 lbs, I can out run him, but if he had me in a corner the situation would call for a differnt answer. So I don't think that there is a clear cut anwser other than: anything it takes to save you own butt. -

Ninga Gadden Series, and Kung Fu is old school, I like the Tekken Series. -
I was in a street fight once, it happened outside a bar after closing. It was long before I had started training in MA. My buddies and I were waiting in my car and a drunken idiot came over to us looking for a fight. I was driving and had nothing to drink we just ignored him at first. The guy went back to his car and got a wooden stick after a few words. He started to hit my car with the stick, thats when I stepped out. He swung the stick and it bounced off my forearm and on to the ground. A couple of punches were trown and it ended up on the ground in the middle of a 4 lane street. I outwieghed him by at least 40 lbs, so i ended up on top of him swinging and punching. I was all set for the KO boom and my buddy grabbed me because the cops were just showing up and one of his buddies was pulling him out too. It probablly wasn't the brightest moment in my life, and I'm glad that nobody was seriously hurt. It's safe to say that I am retired 1-0 as a street fighter. I have saw my best friends brother, KO someone out in a parking lot of a bar once. It was the shortest fight I had ever saw. The guy came running in and took a reverse punch to the jaw. (my buddies brother does karate and teaches BJJ) I think the impact of his head hitting the ground after the intial punch did it, but it was one heck of a punch.[/b]

This sounds about right, breaking up the fight would be a good idea.

Does it hurt during the chamber or the kick? If it is the chamber I would suggest stretching a lot. If it is during the kick then you may want to have an instructor correct your form (poor form maybe a cause). Another suggestion is you might have a hip flexor problem- see a doctor if it always hurts. Do squats/ lunges to help increase the strength in your hips. I have had hip problems and it sucks, it hurts and it doesn't make any MA fun. Hoppe it feels better GL

The shipping is a bit late (holiday mail & customs suck) and I have not recieved the program yet. It was sent by general mail which really sucks, I would have paid for FedEX or UPS. I will let you know how it works. Hopefully it will help me get down to middle weight, in my division.

First Name which style you are taking and why you started training? What do you like or dislike about it? I study Tradition TKD (ITF). I started because I was getting sick of the gym. I like TKD because it has helped me increase my flexablity and taught me how to defend myself if I ever need too. I enjoy the training and sparring, patterns are one of my dislikes but you need them for a good base.

I disagree, traditional TKD (ITF affiliated) is very effective. I am about the same size and find hands and feet effective in my style. An elbow, knee, and hand skills are very important. Do your homework on various arts in your area. You can learn a lot about an art by watching the top fighters in the club spar.

I'd say study the Cane, a walking stick is a great weapon if you know how to use it right. Rent a movie called The Advendures, the guy has awesome cane work. An Umbrella can also be used as a cane. It has a pointed end and a hooked end, good for sweeps and poking someone. It show similarities to Fencing and is an interesting art that would make Yoda proud.

~Favorite Kicks~

Any kick that lands clean, is my favorite. My most useful kicks are sidekicks and back kicks. I like the switch away back kick and a nice hook kick too. -
Learning sequence of Forms/Katas

Besides the whole practise thing try clearing your mind of all the crap that has gone on during the day. Picture your pattern in you head before you start. Take a deep breath, relax open your eyes and start. Focus on all your movements stances punches and blocks as if you were practicing alone. I have messed up in the past and was able to fix the problem. I have been in gymnasiums with hundreds of sreaming people and was able to block out noise and distractions and win in my patterns. It is challenging at first but you can apply it to many other things too. -
Must have been one of those stories you had to be there for. To me it was asthough the guy was being ignorant about what he was saying when in actuality he was a dumb *.

Getting ready to start MA. Question about streching etc.
The Saint replied to GrooveChampion's topic in Health and Fitness
Well, your a big guy at 15. The weight should matter at this point because yul'' probablly grow somemore around 18/19. I would start running to get your wind up. Then just do 3 set of 10 pushups and situps. After it gets easy increase the push ups and sit ups, becareful not to overtrain at yuor age as muscle development is at it's highest peak during the teenage period. Good luck. As for Kata's and forms, all the stances, kicks, punches and blocks will help you become a better fighter. I love to spar and have realized that patterns help basic movement which is good for power and to find openings when punches and kicks are being fired at you. -
