Measuring kicking power
The Saint replied to exkarategirl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Try going to this web site, There is a thing called a pressure mat which measures the force that your body puts on your feet. It is used for orthotics in shoes. If you could somehow attach it in a vertical position it could potentialy work. I'm not too sure on this because it has possible never been done before. Good Luck if you try it, and keep us informmed on findings, It sounds like a good experiment. http://www.swri.org/3pubs/ird2000/09-9178.htm -
Don't get discouraged and train hard, You'll eventually get better with lots of training, cardio helps too i'll help give you a good spring in your kicks. Fighting a skilled fighter is good because it shows you your weaknesses. A good fighter will exploit weakness in their opponent and then use it to beat on them. Just think on areas to improve and train hard. It'll come back, good luck

Why do you study TKD?
The Saint replied to The Saint's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My instructor offers many techniquies besides TKD, He also teaches BJJ, Boxing and Savate (french Kickboxing) so our club offers more than just spinning kicks and high kicks. More issue is put on self defence. Some clubs train tournament fighters and some clubs produce street defence. It all depends on the instructor. I like the well roundedness of martial arts. The more tools you have the better, but it still come down to the basics. -
Natutrally, I have tight hamstrings, is there any streatching web sites out there or adivce anyone can tell me? The muscle fibres are short due to lifting weights with hardly any streatching. I am trying to become more flex able so it helps with kicks. Any adice?

Personally I like the form of self defence over the sport. Any other opinions?

fighting a Tall and agile kciker
The Saint replied to superfighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Get in close seems to be the thing... works good, I'm tall so I like the distance game.....the more the better.....Backfists work well and lots of hand skills. good luck -
A black belt is a good achievement, it takes about 4 years in TKD, 3 times a week for 4 yrs, Belt Colour should matter though.... it's just a belt. However if you are and excellent fighter with a black belt that is a dofferent storey. I have spared with a lot of balck belt who were not the best fighters and some that kicked my a@@. If you train hard and love yuor art it shouldn't really matter what colour of belt you are.

Just remember you can run faster scared than they can angry...lol, just kidding, try a defensive side kick to stun them so you can get out of there, avoiding a conflict at all cost is good, However sometimes it doesn't work. Just use basic martial arts, most people (not involed in MA) don't spar a couple times a week, so use quickness and speed to kick butt.

Against a good sidekick
The Saint replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
If your fighting from a closed stance, when he kicks move your lead leg half way back sweep his leg with your front hand so his back is almost facing you then you could use a reg hand to the side of his face, I've saw this technique used as a counter in TAGB tournaments, very effective, it also works on annoying mutiple kickers. Just watch out for the back kick if you try this -
What is the coolest kick that you have ever saw? Not Hollywood kicks? Real life.. The coolest Kick I have ever saw was a guy in our club, it was a 720 corkscrew kick. his body was parrallell with the ground about 4 feet in the air. He also landed on the same foot he kicked with and took off with.

washing of dobok
The Saint replied to NightShade_UK's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have two doboks, the training on is a black one, good for sweat and a nice white one for competition only. but I wash and dry them like everything else and the are clean, for sweat stains definetly pre treat the stain or your dobok will be yellow. -
The Big Question: Why Do You Do Martial Arts?
The Saint replied to Sutton_uk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I joined to give lifting weights a break, I wanted to be more flexable as well. I started at 22 and enjoy going to improve my overall fitness level, plus kicking things and people relieves stress....lol -

When I train to develop speed I try to hit the bag quick but not hard. I normally put a lot of force into my kicks making my legs strong. When I train for speed I just lightly tap the bag.Lots of cardio helps too..Cycling and quick wind sprints is another way to increase speed. Developing quick explosive technic is hard and takes some time but when you do get it, it's awsome

BEING REAL BIG MAY COMPRIMISE YOUR SPEED, BUT TO BE CUT AND FIT WILL DEFINATELY HELP. GETTING TOO BIG ALSO MAKES YOUR HEART WORK HARDER, I KNOW A LOT OF LARGE BODY BUILDERS WHO HAVE HEART PROBLEMS IN THE EARLY 40'S. LOOK AT ARNOLD, REALLY BIG AND STRONG, ALREADY HARD A BYPASS SURGRY. WHAT REAL ADVANTAGE IS BEING BIG? MYSELF, I RATHER BE FIT AND LEAN, THAN BE BIG.

I have notice a trend of people not looking at there oponent when bowing. Bowing is a form of respect for your opponent, but should also be done with caution. Has anyone else noticed this?

The life of a teenager is kinda wierd, I've also been a victum to this. How I ended this distraction was: I train harder when I'm against this person, I kicked the bad harder, and went harder in Sparing.I also learned to pay more attention to detail in my patterns(helps with focus). Focusing while training will help in Competetion. If this Doesn't work tell her "you only get what you pit into it. And you would like to train hard and not fool around." Also, let her know that she is being rude by interupting the class. As pretty as she is, being disrespectful to the instrutor makes classes for him/her difficult to teach. Good Luck and continue to strive for excellence

point fighting
The Saint replied to Martial Law's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Point fighting can be good for accuracy and speed, getting KO'ed is no fun, speed and accuracy is practised by everyone! To have the power and not use it is good because it will always be there as a back up plan (or to settle down an opponent that is kicking below the belt).
