  1. 9 years, but I took my time, plus injuries delays.
  2. Ah, glad it's not just me that has done that... My instructor is used to me having "brain f arts" (as he calls them) in the middle of kata. Best advice!!!! Thanks Aefibird!! http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521
  3. Drink plenty of water and be prepared to toss some cookies Good luck!! http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521
  4. I started training in 1994 under the direction of Master John Graden , Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, and Mr. Joe Lewis in St. Petersburg, Florida. I am currently 51 y/o and continue to compete in the NASKA/FLMA florida circuit in the Executive Men's Black Belt Division. My primary style/discipline has been ITF style of Tae Kwon Do with occasional classes in shootfighting, Shotokan, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, and Kempo. Am I crossed trained? Probably not...but I have some exposure to other disciplines when competing against other non-TKD stylists. My usual winning Kata has and will remain Bassai Dai (Major) which is traditionally a Shotokan form. Good luck to you and never give up. Peace http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521

  11. I started training at age 38. I didn't fell silly at all. I had, at times, been frustrated when learning kata with the younger students in class not keeping up the timing and would stumble over them, however it improved my scope of vision and awareness http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521
  12. I'll help instruct http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521

  14. Broke the mid right hand third digit metacarpal, two titanium screws, missed the middle of the board
  15. "Bastardizing" TKD!! Oh no, the art has no mother!!! I was trained by Mr. John Graden in American TKD that he learned from Mr. Joe Lewis & Bill "Superfoot" Wallace who in turn trained with the late ,great Mr. Bruce Lee(even though his style was Jeet Kune Do), who I could have sworn wore a black do bok, GI, etc. from time to time. I was started off in traditional white, moved to red gi (Black Belt Club) certainly a gimmick, moved to a black GI (Master's Club) ,gimmick #2 in my brown belt era, and been with it ever since, blood doesn't show up well on black Does the color of my GI effect my performance, technique, or expertise? Good question. But I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night JAK
  16. Board Breaking Tip: Hit it hard & hit it in the middle Forms:Speed, power, tempo, well even spaced kia's(too many and I'll start laughing),strong finish in their face.... Good Luck and act as if nobody's watching
  17. I expect there's a lot of "black belt" instructors terrorizing mid rank belts for no other reason than to grandstand or humiliate. The instructors role is to teach and train, simple as that. To deliberately batter an under belt as you say this BB has done, borders on cowardice and lack of physical control without benefit to your training. It's unfortunate, but there out there, but I think they're the exceptions that mistrain aspiring martial art practioners. http://community.webshots.com/user/jakmak521
  18. Here's 2 links to NASKA tournaments I use.. http://www.naska.com/html/2004_world_tour.html http://www.naska.com/html/2004_national-state.html Peace, Jack
  19. All of the tournaments I've competed in, judges pretty much look for presentation, timing, power, intensity, low stances, angular techniques, and focus....I use a kata I am very familiar with and practice it over and over again..I don't pratice the day before the competition, it's like studying the night before a test (overdoing it), but that just works for me... Peace, Jack
  20. I too prefer front leg attacks, the back leg style telegraphs my intention too much... Peace, Jack
  21. My favorite form for competitions is Bassai Dai (Major), which I believe is originally a Shotokan kata, I enjoy the variety of blocks, kicks and strikes. Kwan Gae is my second favorite. Peace, Jack
  22. What difference does the dojo have to do with it?? It might be an easy task for you, but others need extra help, just like you would in some areas, like empathy and understanding.....
  23. I also find it difficult to get into the rythym of alternating roundhouse kicks without loosing my balance..Bill (Superfoot) Wallace taught me to step up onto a chair alternating legs kicks to improve the stability and accuracy of the kicks which helped tremendously..now once I get started, the rythym picks up as I go along... Peace, Jack
