  5. IMHO, with the limited experience I have, tournament and street/barroom fighting are on different levels of mental, emotional and physical challenges. When tournament fighting, I'm not as concerned with my personal safety as in a street/bar situation, which requires me to exert a higher degree of self-defense, contrary to tournament fighting in which my opponent is looking to score points rather than teeth or my wallet or significant other. I try to use profeesionalism, control and discipline in the honorable martial arts competition arena, in the streets, pull the stops.. However, my foremost best move is not to FIGHT [ This Message was edited by: jakmak52 on 2001-10-24 14:02 ]

  8. The full contact bouts I've attended didn't require that type of safety gear, I've only seen it used in POINT matches..
  9. The (Hyungs) that were taught to me I know are traditional, but you know I've watched other "forms" performed at tournaments here in Florida and it freaks me out how they "resemble" other styles and disciplines..it's really exciting for me to watch other's do their thing..keep it up..
  10. The forms (kata, poomse, etc) I study are from the ITF (International) style. I suppose there's alot of different ideas and thoughts as to where they originated. I was led to believe the kata i'm studying was presented by General Choi Hong-hi & Mr. Jhoon Rhee, I have no reason to doubt it. The current kata I practice is Tan-Gun, ToSan, YulKuk, Hwa-Rang,Toi-Ge,Choi-Ge,Chung-Moo, Kwan-Ge, and Bassai-Dai. Now of course there's different spellings and variations on the moves. I love um all. My hardest to learn, hahaha, the first. Thanks. [ This Message was edited by: jakmak52 on 2001-10-24 12:30 ]
  11. My name is Jack from Tampa, Florida. I started studying TKD under the direction of Mr. John Graden at the former USA Karate dojo on 11/20/1994 in St. Petersburg, Florida. My current rank is 1st degree brown and am working towards my 1st dgree black. I'm looking forward to being an active participant and contributor to this forum. Thanks for letting me join. Jack
  12. I study the ITF style of TKD and use my kicking maybe 70% of the time because of the distance I can cover as well as the power I generate from my legs compared to hand attacks, although a spinning backhand can cause extreme discomfort
  13. Sometimes ESPN 2 shows amatuer kickboxing bouts, watch the showtimes.
  14. Go for it Ray, I'm 48 y/o and started when I was 38, age and weight are irrelevant, too a point of course, when I started I was on the fence on whether I could really do this or not. After learning my very first Kata (Form) I was hooked, there was no stopping me, except when my school closed, but at least I achieved 1st degree brown. Go for it Ray, because if you don't, you'll always wonder.
