  1. It's already starting to pass, we had a week layoff and everyone came back with gusto.
  2. I keep my street cane next to the door, but my wife has a huge perform bottle with sharpe corners...I thought it was a weapon the first time I seen it.
  3. I don't believe that's a problem in my dojo, we have an Aikido sensei come out once a month to help us with wrist locks. We also study the cane and arnis. We use a JKA style syllabus but we also use throws, etc. My student are doing very well at karate and usually out perform other dojo (it's all them, not me) but for some reason the dojo seems to be in a slump. Maybe it's me....
  4. Is kung fu used in mixed martial arts fighting? I can't remember the last time I heard kung fu was used in the mma world of fighting.
  5. It seems many of my students have hit a wall, they don't seem to be pushing themselves as hard as they did a month ago. Any tips to help to them refocused? It happened to me often when training and it just took time to get out of the rut... Sho-ju nidan, shotokan
  6. I've heard it said both ways, kon as in ex-con and kun as in raccoon. Which way is proper?
  7. I've heard it said many times that jitte 'could' be used as a bo kata, anyone ever do it as such? What is the name, Jitte no kon?

  12. May have been just the guys dojo he trainned in. Okinawa karate is known for its low kicks, maybe from there, maybe from mauy thai and the early kyokushin vs. mauy thai matches.
  13. chaks are are very difficult weapon to strike with. ex. dog brothers. the time it takes for the losed chak to come back come be your down fall.
  14. Nice video. http://www.quarterstaff.org/frame.html
  15. I only know of a few bo kata and only 1 jo kata. Can you guys help me out and list a bunch that you may know?
  16. Keeping in mind it is a 5'5" stick.
  17. Cool stick site. http://www.silambam.com/
  18. In wrestling, jiujitsu, etc, you control the body by controling the head. I'd say you'd have a better chance at winning the fight if the head is planted into the floor. In kumite, if a sweep is made from standing we try and pin the head to the floor with our knee and work for ground a pound from there or side control.
  19. I've mentioned the cane once or twice ( ), anyone use yawara sticks?

    Core Kata

Shotokan sochin is one of the best kata, in any style. Rohai, Suparimpei and naihanchi are others. IMO.
  21. video, I can't find any.

    Core Kata

I like hangetsu with sanchin breathing, or sochin because it has elements of many kata.

    Core Kata

Which kata is considered a core kata of your system? I think it's safe to say shotokan's core kata are bassai dai and kanku dai. In my dojo we focus on bassai dai, tekki's and sochin.
  24. I'VE FOUND THE ANSWER! I have a cane master cane and love it. Most of the karateka in my dojo own cane master canes...but I think I found a cheaper way to go. I recently went to a hardware store and found a 'hardwood' stockmans cane. It's unfinished at 38" long and I only paid $8.04 (Canadian) with tax for it. A friend of mine will add ANY of the special features of cane master combat canes including sanding and tung oil finish for only $20 bucks. The wood is very hard, I'm thinking maple. Maple after it's finished is fine for cane work, I own a shillelagh made of the stuff.
  25. I've only seen cane kata's once or twice, does anyone know of any online?
