  1. Because I have a nidan in karate already, I trained with the black belts...it was still boring with mostly defence drills, etc. It could've been the school.
  2. I did study meibukan goju for 6 months and didn't like it. I love to attack, I was taught goju as a defensive art only. The local mantis school is called Wu Shen Temple, it has 34 empty handed forms and 16 weapons forms. That seems like alot but they also do chin na, train 3 times a week for 2 hours each. The cost is only $45 bucks a month, seems like a steal. The first rule about the Pak Mei school is, nobody talks about Pak Mei. I know nothing about it. sj
  3. What style do you study and why do you like it? I'm looking for a sifu right now and not sure which style to study, locally all I have in my area is a Shaolin school. With a bit of driving I could study Pak Mei with Dan Pai's grandson or Mantis and chin na...what do you think of these styles.
  4. Thanks for the link...I think the kiai is done in different places according to dojo...any other places?
  5. Where do you kiai in this kata?
  6. Without turning this into a pp thread (unless it's related to Chinese White Crane), why is White Crane often considered to be the most dangerous of the Kung Fu styles? sj
  7. Sorry, Bassai is related to tiger kung fu. Hangetsu = Seisan. Hangetsu is often considered older then seisan, shotokan karateka didn't like it (thank God!) and so it was left un altered where many forms of seisan exist, only one hangetsu. Both are based on blocking 'gates' taken from kung fu. Sorry about that.
  8. The deeper I go into shorin style, I find that hakutsuru is also the found within the system. In fact many kata are linked to kung fu...bassai to leopard, hangetsu is based on the 8 gates, gankaku and rohai are basic crane forms. Do you have video of that goju kata?
  9. Anyone study white crane, what are the forms like?
  10. Sorry, I guess I should have said that I was looking for video's that I could download and view from my computer... sj
  11. I'm doing a study of hakutsuru (White Crane) kata, the father being Crane style forms of kung fu. Does anyone know where I can find online videos of the crane form or any other 'good' traditional kung fu forms? Thanks
  12. Good stuff KD, thanks.
  13. That's called 'no holds barred or a street fight' and your right, what else would you call a competition where you can hit each other as hard as you can? I would probably call that full contact.
  14. Any links to this style?
  15. What does your dojo do, how do you train and how much is still traditional karate?
  16. Skinny white guy...I hav'em all on cd but not online, sorry.
  17. We have randori kumite from day one, white belts, newbies, whoever but we do have folks that don't like free style sparring and pre set kumite is great for them.
  18. I see Taba Sensei listed on the site in your sig, are you guys Shogen ryu? The sensei that over sees my dojo is a fourth dan in Shogen ryu Canada, Taba Sensei was just at his dojo last month!
  19. We noticed a marked improvement with our timing last night, I feel it is a useful tool.
  20. Well, what say you? Is it a worthy tool for a karateka to spend time on? I've use it in place of free kumite, for those who can't or don't like free kumite.
  21. That must of been one ugly choke. My judo sensei's chokes are so tight you'll go out within 10 secs.
  22. Nothing keeps a person humble then getting the subed, pinned and thrown at will by a 55 year judoka which happened repeatedly tonight in class. (I'm 26.)
  23. I don't think 4 or 5 mins is a correct time either.
