Rattan should only be use against rattan canes. Hard woods will destory them but hard woods also can snap and splinter. sj

I have did the search but was looking to ask direct questions.

I've been looking around the internet for a combat cane at a good price, here's what I've found. The top of the line are: Cane Masters http://www.canemasters.com/ Goju-Shorei Weapons http://www.gojushorei.com/canes.htm Mendowood http://sdksupplies.netfirms.com/cat_stdweapons.htm Middle of the road Newt Livesay, great price for extra tooling on the cane. http://newtlivesay.com/NL_fighting_canes.htm Others Brazos has a nice root and iron bamboo cane. http://www.brazos-walking-sticks.com/index.html Sei Do Kai, not a lot of bang for your buck. http://sdksupplies.netfirms.com/cat_stdweapons.htm Century also has a cheap rattan cane http://centuryma.com/

For my shodan, we did a regular class and then graded. Total time was about 2 hours with the 'grading' lasting only about 25 min. (It was a sensei from the KUGB Scotland.) I switched sensei and dojo, trainned and graded for my nidan. It lasted 4 hours and didn't have a 'grading' according to a syllabus. Good luck, the road is long and hard. Shoju

I have a nidan in a form of shotokan ryu, I think you'd be better off in kyokushin. If offers many elements traditional shotokan offers, but the kuimte is better.
-
because in most schools it's heavy on the 'do' and too light on the 'jitsu.' the emphasis in most dojo is the art form and not the practical self defence.
-
No I'm not. We run an independent dojo with lose ties to a handful of Okinawan Karate dojos. We maintain a class shotokan syllabus, but make use of Okinawa kata and training. sj
-
In some ways yes, the kata have been diminished by Okinawa bunkai standards. But they have also improved in other ways. That is way we included more Okinawa kata in our dojo and have gotten away, far away in many ways from JKA.

nidan in traditional karate.

Nahhh, not if your hard core. I wrap mine in a plastic bag and it's nailed to the back of a tree, facing another tree. If you use it often it won't last more then a month. I'm lucky to be able to get them often, I work at a library and take home last years phone books. The kung fu sifu takes them out of the tree after using tiger palm (not sure if that's what its' called), where he rips them down. Now his back yard is an eyesore. He has two heavy bags, a wooden dummy, huge rocks for lifting and yes phone books.
-
lol, I forgot to warn you to look and aim when punching. Always start off slow...it works very well. The kung fu sifu who uses the phone book is also a boxing coach. His guys have more k.o. then most non-pro boxers.
-
I suggest nailing a phone book into a tree and punching it. It's a tip I picked up from an old kung fu guy and it works.
