  1. if it is only to the black belts to do the real painful stuff, arent other arts like Krav Maga better for self defense purpose, because u learn the dirty stuff (groin, eyes etc) right from the beginning? no offense here - just curious for ur opinions because i neither do judo or krav maga.
  2. since purple belt is 5th gup (isnt it? my dojang aint got purple belts) it is the second half of the gups which makes it a high one imo. at least more high than low its the lowest of the high ones so to speak. if i would have put the middle ones as well it would have been to many poll options and questions like "what is still LOW and what is already MIDDLE??" would occur.
  3. many people are proud of their belts, show of with them or whatever. i agree with u in many ways, but my question regards stuff that goes beyond ur (and to a big extend mine as well) interpretation of belts, such as what other people think about it. no offense meant to you
  4. brutalness kicks to the groin, eye strikes etc are forbidden and make an art very effective. judo was invented to not hurt ur opponent while fighting arts are invented to intentionally do so in the fastest and most effective way there is.
  5. i think there is a sense behind wearing the belts in training just as there is a sense behind wearing a special suit. this sense (whatever it may be) is missing in krav maga and i wanted to know what sense there is then. u think there is no, kirves - any other opinions?
  6. so the belts in KM are senseles to some extend, because any rank system would do just as fine?
  7. i post this little question in here because i regard krav maga as a combative art. what i wanted to know: i know that there is a certain belt system starting with white, over orange, blue, etc till black (rather ordinary system). but since there is no krav maga training suit like the dobok or something and practicioners dont wear them for training, and since there are not krav maga competitions, neither kata (what kata in KM?) nor sparring, i dont really get what meaning the belts have. is it just to put shortterm goals ?
  8. no - i disagree. under certain circumstances its probably better to do what u r told to. either its only ur purse or when its something more "valueable" like spouse, girlfriend, relative, friend etc... what u need to protect. u dont help anyone by jumping into someone elses knife if he'd be satisfied with a few bucks that allow him/her to get the next dosis of drugs or something. but in case u got the skill u should use it for many ppl train for this special moment, and for that there are fewer ppl that can takem things away.
  9. there one was some thread that asked what u would do under gunpoint and most of the answers were like "do what he wants" and stuff. i totally agree with that, which brings me to my question... systems that teach defense techniques against an attack with a gun (thinking of krav maga e.g.) bare a big risk to personal health imo. i mean - at what distance do they work? in case ur opponent is not a complete idiot he will manage to press the fire button and then ur toast. when getting mugged without gunpoint, it could be worth a try for a judo practicioner to try a grappling move. if this fails, u can still give away ur purse which might be difficult if u r hit by a gunshot, where ever it hits u, so to speak. on the other hand - my example of krav maga was invented for army and special security forces etc. terrorists, enemy soldiers and these guys dont wait for u to get out ur purse and then maybe let u walk away. they will shoot in any case so it in a way might be better to perform a krav maga move than nothing, but my thoughts were primarily focussed on the street situation. these are just my thoughts and they are no offense against krav maga practitioners or something. what do you think?
  10. Krav Maga certainly is better suited for the situation in the streets nowadays, while TKD is more traditional, has better looks, philosophy, meditation and stuff. but which one is the better workout? which one trains my cardio better? which one makes me more flexible? which one makes me stronger?
  11. all of the above u know? but its more fitness (thats what i voted for) than everything else and fun follows close behind. i couldnt imagine to miss one of these.
  12. the difference is that u have to pick "low colored belt" in the poll just kidding - whats ur style?
  13. it depends on what u like better. when u r in for the sports and the competition wtf has hands/legs up, but its not a good self defense system. there is a thread regarding the differences somewhere...
  14. i think if the shade wouldnt have talked to her yet, he would not come to this forum for ideas, because his last ones didnt work. maybe its right that martial arts is just not her thing... in that case u can probably forget about it. perhaps she as well is too stubborn (no offense here ) to listen to ur advice and rather sticks to her hometrainer u were talking about. while i myself like you think that that is probably not as effective. training at home is a very good idea though. dont do fancy kicks right at the beginning, it would probably discourage her. tell her about the benefits u got from ur training at that no hometrainer can substitute a good instructor that knows what workouts do work and which dont. if she is sensible and does not have too much work etc to do, she can probably be convinced.
  15. for those with more than one style... do either the one ur practicing at the moment, ur favourite one, ur highest one or whatever u like.
  16. just for interest feel free to as well post ur style or something. lower than half the way to a black belt is what i call "low" colored belt. anything between 1st Dan and that is high colored, the first two or three dan grades are low black belts and well - perhaps we have a master of the arts around )
  17. people to not only bas TKD but shotokan as well, at least sometimes. two of the most famous styles in the world with the most practioners (after judo, perhaps). this should've been posted in "General Martial Arts" so more people can take part and can be convinced than TKD is not so bad after all
  18. so they focus on what? meditation, philosophy and physical fitness? thats a point. but i think these are what make they art more effective in combat. the understanding and the ability are essential to make an art combative. or do u talk about other emphasises?
  19. some stupid question: which styles are regarded as being "combative" and which are not? and why are they more combative than others, because in my opinion, every "martial" art is combative to a certain extend. please forgive me for this stupidness and answer without insults for my questions
  20. i wouldnt risk it: "cant u do any better than THIS?"
  21. i am very busy with waiting for my dojang to finally accept beginners again so i can finally get started with MA... have been waiting for so long and its still about 5-8 weeks... until then i am going to work on getting some more flexible and stuff.
  22. hahaha - yeah thanks for the good laugh BigGuy
  23. MA Shortterm finally get the **** started already Longterm my blackbelt of course Life Shortterm make the best outa the upcoming holidays, play the piano more often, get into better shape and prepare for my exams. Longterm finish school (in an excellent way ) and go to university...!
  24. TKD is not only about high kicking and stuff. there are also many strike techniques while emphasis is put on kicks. for self defense the kicks to the head are not recommended. belt-level kicks and such would do better. whether TKD gives u a good self defense depends on ur dojang and on ur instructor.
  25. what kind of pushups are we talking about? the real slow ones that are damn heavy to pull off? the fast ones, that dont bring much effect?
