Quit, Quit, Quit. Sparring is a fundemental part of martial arts, try visiting a club who sparrs and u'll probably find they will nail u in kumite, seriously u cant beat experience.

Did u know that he did judo when he was younger. He actually preferred it. He had to make the choice whether to do Go-karting or Judo, he chose judo but found that he kept losing so he went with Go-karting eventually.

Ironberg, u were unlucky with your growth spurts. Most ppl have a few growth spurts through their teens and basically grow at a steady rate over a long period of time and still reach say 6'4''. These ppl have kept in proprtion because their exercise rate matched their growth rate. U then see ppl who grow very fast in one short growth spurt and were probably taller than everyone when they were younger. These ppl are unlucky because they are growing very fast upwards but are growing slow in mass. These ppl need to match their exercise rate with their growth rate which is somtimes impossible. Its all about luck, growing fast early is a bad thing. Its hard to explain in writing .

It would depend on how intimidating the ppl were and if I thought they were going to attack me, sometimes they just like to talk big. However I think pre-emptive strikes are key to defending your self and if I thought I was going to be attacked I would have done the same. Besides you only hit him once and then left the scene, and there was a group of them, thats exactly what u should do in a self-defence situation.

If you time it right and you have strong abdominal muscles then it is possible to take the punch, we train this in our style of karate and I'll guess its fundmental in styles like Kyokushin karate. Its also how they take punches in boxing. U tense ur stomach and breath out sharply at the point of impact. However I dont know if this would work with a bare fist, what do u think?
-
There should be tournements in which u create and demonstrate your own kata's, u would then earn points for technique but also for creativity.
-
Yeah, The best way wud probably be to design an attack first and then create the kata to counter it, u could then scrap the attack or use it to demonstrate the kata. U'd need to think it through it though to make it look good.

A chimpanzie actually pulled a child's arm out of his socket once when he put his arm through the bars in a zoo, True story. Oh by the way, primates are naturally strong, they have different muscle composistions compared to humans.

I dont know if ur talking about sparring or a street fight, but I disagree. I think in a street fight punches are mainly targeted at close range to your abdominal region, but I cant seem to think of an effective technique to counter it, or one that I can perform quick enough to stop the blow from hitting me, most uppercuts are very quick and dont telegraph much.

For a spinning side kick I would step to the left hand side of it and bring my left arm across my body, pushing the kick along and making ur opponent over kick, u'll probably find that they now have their back to u, u can then do lots of things...

I actually got my nose broken by a spinning hook kick in sparring about a month ago. The guy was pretty intimidating cuz of his size and his kicks were so hard (too hard for semi) that I tried to move out of range, unfortunatley the kick just reached me and whiped by nose, it hurt like hell, lots of blood I find that the problem with hook kicks is that they come from the right hand side, and they move very fast. I'm there ready to defend a back leg kick from the left and one of those beasts hits me from the opposite side. After that broken nose I'm quite jumpy about spinning hook kicks. My advice wud be to move into the arc of the kick and use a low outside kick block with ur left and at the same time use ur right palm to cover ur head, so u've basically got ur hole torso and head covered like one long block, u push towards the kick, putting ur opponent of balance and then counter attack, the key is to stiffen ur block and drive ur body like a human shield into the kick, and when u counter attack make sure its a fast one. After my broken nose I will think twice when trying to move out of the range of a spinning hook/heel kick

How do you defend agaisnt one of these because i've not come across it yet in my style. The problem with defending against the uppercut is that it comes out of nowhere, has only a short distance to travel (when aimed at the stomach) and is at a awkward angle, not forgetting that its friggen powerful. What would u suggest?

If u want to find out about gun or knife defence I would seriously consider reading up on some SAS self-defence tactics, their excellant. I've recently read SAS guide to self defence and theres a defence for more or less everything, from guns to wild animals. I also found a good site yesterday about gun defences, check it out: http://www.stavacademy.co.uk/mimir/gettough1.htm Its basically a collection of the best locks, holds, defences etc. that you as a human being can possibly do, have a look. p.s Dont ask why the attacker is always a german footsoldier from WWII???

Ok, I'm 17 years old and my height is 5'10'' (last time I checked, I may be 5'11, but I doubt it) weighing in at 143 pounds. I have a very good muscle/fat ratio, and seem to be stronger than ppl who seem alot bigger than me. I go to the gym twice a week, however I dont do free weights. I do use the weight machines though and abit of cardio on the side. I work out quite hard on the weight machines. I do a 2hours of karate every week and at home I do lots of calisthenics and isometrics every night. (sorry 4 the life story) My question is simple and I know its hard to answer from the limited information I've given you, but do u think I'm stunting my growth. Remember I'm still only 17, however I dont think i'm gonna gain much more in height at this age, or am I. Be as detailed as u like in ur answer.
-
Yeah good point, U cant cross train between the two, u've gotta either train like a fighter (which is what u are) or take up gymnastics and do their training, however that wont help u if ur attacked on the street, unless ur attacked when climbing ladders...
-
I might, but i'm planning on joining the police force and they dont like it when its too visible.

Has anyone ever tried to invent their own kata, be it complex or simple in design? and maybe even gone on to name it (in Japanese of course). Although the katas that are intergrated into many karate styles have been created by experienced black belts, I think any middle grade martial artist would benfit themsleves by designing their own. What do you think and have you ever done it? Also do professional tournement competetors in kata design their own?
-
Actually, what u've suggested is more or less kickboxing, which is lesser known as Full Contact Karate. I know it sounds a bit cliche and I hate saying it, but if u were doing REAL traditional karate then ppl wud get killed or badly injured. This would mean that some things would not be allowed, therefore meaning it isnt REAL karate and just another form of kickboxing.
-
Yes, but it wud have to be regulated, we dont want to turn karate into kickboxing.

I've been taught to keep the hips square, but I know what u mean by putting everything into hit when hitting a bag, its like everything changes.
