  1. I was wondering how young everyone was when they started studying the martial arts? When was the first time you realized that this is what you wanted to do for the rest of your life? I was around six yrs old when I started to really get into watching old ninja movies and I used to sit in front of the t.v and watch the Sunday morning kungfu showcase of all the oldschool kungfu movies of that era. I started training when I was about 14 yrs old in a traditional form of Jujutsu called Hakkoryu.I have been studying under the same sensei ever since.

I was wondering if anyone was is planning on seeing the new star wars movie coming out soon? I can't wait to see how Anikin becomes darth vader and to see him fight obi wan! I have heard that this one is supose to be the most in-depth story line created aout of all six.
  3. I've had my bokken for 12 yrs now and I practice with regularlly and I have never had a problem with it as far as it breaking on me. You would have to hit something pretty hard in order to break one of those and I would have to say that if your hitting another bokken that hard, you should probably tone it down a little, there is no reason to practice against someone that hard .
  4. I like about every kind of music, but I have to say that I am into metal the most. I love everything metal. Right now, I am really into Dimmu Borgir,Deicide,Vile Remains,Dying Fetus, and Cattle Decaputation. I've been playing guitar for a long time now and I find this stuff very complicated and challanging to learn to play. I also love old 80's music,Bannanarama, tears for fears, and Aha.Any of that stuff rocks.Makes me feel young again.
  5. Maybe you can try to make sure that you don't set yourself up by putting yourself in that position. Try to make him think your going to give it up and when he goes for his move, counter it with something else.Set him up.
  6. Thats hilarious!!!
  7. I have been throwing weapons for about 20 yrs now and I am very good at it,so I can speak from experience when I say, the only reason that you throw a knife straight is for when you want it to stick into somthing close to you. You will never be able to throw a knife for a great distance without putting a spin on it, it doesn't work that way. It takes years of practice to learn anything, but with knife throwing, it pretty much comes down to common sense. Stand three feet in front of your target and throw your knife with a decent amount of force, you'll see that the blade sticks without spinning. Then take three steps back and do it again, you'll notice that you will have to throw it with a little more force than on your previous attempt to get it to stick without spinning. When you start to get 10 to 15 yards away from your target, You will realize that it is imposible to hit your target without spinning your blade and that you will end up having to throw it similiar to throwing a baseball. Sai are naturally heavy and would by all means make it to your target with no problems, but the chances are slim if any that you could get it to stick into anything without it being pure luck.(assuming that they are sharpened). your better off starting out with knives first so that you can figure out the mechanics of throwing weapons.
  8. I also like the old 30's movies. Lon Chaney, Bela Lagosi, Boris Carloff definitly started it all. I remember watching wolfman when I was very young and it scared the crap out of me. The original Dracula was also neat to watch. I definitly love the gore in todays movies. I love to think to myself, how the hell did the do that effect, that is bad*!@! I've always got into the special effects part of horror movies. At one point, I was going to enrole at Tom Savini's school of effects in Pennsylvania. It is a 16 month degree in special effects that includes animatronics, human anatomy, claymation work and different kinds of mask making as well as a ton of other cool stuff to learn. If that is what you want to get in to for a career, then Savini's school can get you there.
  9. I've never had a chance to meet him but from what I have read on him,he is one of the most knowledgable people out there. He doubled for Pat Morita in the movie "Karate Kid".
  10. I've never heard of it.
  11. I would have to say my favorite holiday is Halloween.I love carving pumpkins! All the good Halloween movies come on t.v and I love to decorate my house with all of the Holloween decor. The only thing I don't like about it is taking all the decorations down!
  12. I recently saw the grudge. I thought it was a very good. I have not been impressed with the horror movies that have been coming out lately but I really liked the grudge. I think it was very well made, and pretty scary when you watch it for the first time. On a one to five scale,I'll give the grudge a four.
  13. I have never heard it. sounds cool ,if you find out more, let us know.
  14. Kamiasma, it sounds to me that you want to learn the martial arts just so that it will help you with fighting people on the street. if thats the case, your barking up the wrong tree. Martial Arts isn't just about fighting,in fact, it's completly the opposite. I will continue to train in the martial arts for the rest of my life and if I don't ever get into another fight in the street for as long as I live, I'll be a happy man. There is so much more to it than just learning to fight. Unfortunatlly,it is somthing I cannot explain to you, you'll have to figure it out on your own. Everyone can hurt a human being, hurting someone is easy, the trick is to learn how to heal and to help one another. Hope this gives you some insight .
  15. I don't think a certain body type plays a role, nor do I think body weight does either. I am a big guy and my ukemi is very good. I think you just have to keep working on it until you have it down. At my dojo, the first thing you learn is ukemi and you will not learn any advaced techniques until you have the falls down. I think all dojo's should have ukemi incorparated into their training schedule. It's a good thing to know when your in the air and about to end up on your head! heh heh
  16. I think the samurai studied a varity of different ma. The one I am most familiar with would have to be aikijutsu and prabably kenjutsu. I could be wrong,I'm no pro when it comes to these questions.
  17. I was wondering what everyone's favorite scary movie was? I'm a huge horror movie fan and have been collecting them for most of my life. I have always liked the 80's genre of slasher flicks. I'd have to say that my top ten favs would have to be: Friday the 13th series Halloween series Reanimater Return of the living dead Night of the creeps C.H.U.D TheOmen series Night Breed SleepawayCamp Fright Night There are tons of others that I love watching, but these are my favorites. The cheeser the better!
  18. I'm sorry for you and your friends family. Losing someone close to you is never easy. I have had two of my close friends die and the way I made it thru it all was to be there for thier families and to never stop remembering all the good times we had together. He's with god now. Keep your head up.
  19. gumbi, I wasn't saying it wouldn't work, I was saying I had only used it in randori practice and had never used it on the street. As to the reason why I created the post, I'd have to say that I was just curious, thats all.
  20. Whats everyone think about sankaku jime (triangle choke)? I can pull it off in radori, but do you think it would work in a confrontation on the street as long as it was a fight one on one?
  21. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the deferences between the different styles of tai chi, yin, yang, chen,wu, and sun? I've studied the yang system a little and learned the yang form but didn't know if each system has varities of different forms for each system.
  22. I was wondering if anybody knows were to get good authentic tabi boots at? I can only find the cheap kind . I want a pair to mess around outside with but all of the sites i've been on have the cheap velcro kind .
  23. Anyone ever tried to use hand and foot claws to climb anything? I had a pair once and I tried to climb a tree in my backyard and they killed the backs of my hands. I can see useing them as a weapon for fighting but for climbing, I don't think so. The movies make it look so real.
