  1. training stuff - as in euipment? boxing employs several methods of gnerating power, all oare some variation of torque via the waist.

  5. strength and stamina will come - it's unavoidable. As TJS pointed out though, the techniques don't rely on strength. Here's what a typical 1.5 hour class is like at my gym: 9 mins of jumping rope (three 3 min rounds) 1 min of one leg jumping rope (30 secs each leg) line drills shadow boxing various stretching exercises push ups rock climbers ab work new techniques various pad and footwork drills pad drills utilizing the techniques we went over that night and also techniques we are already familiar with. heavy bag work sparring neck wrestling we usually do 2-4 rounds, 2 rounds without the use of knees, and the last 1-2 rounds we will use knees while in the clinch. pad drills some type of murderour drill, like 5-10-5's or something pushups ab work stretch
  6. At the professional level, equipment consists only of gloves and a mouthpiece. at amateur level you also have to wear headgear, and some sanctions require shin pads.

  8. the throws are completely combat applicable, and many can be done without a gi. You have a good point though - you have to find a teacher willing to teach you that, if that's what you are looking for.
  9. stance training doesn't build strength unless you are weak to begin with. Stance training builds endurance, not strength. Having said that, the horse stance has internal properites as well. Whipping power of the spine, qigong, etc. stances are used for mobility, and also can be used as a means to disrupt your opponent's stance.

  11. I get sick of the exact opposite - The TMA guys who say they can just do technique X to stop a grappler, but then can't back it up. I get sick of the TMA who piggyback off of their ancestor's rep. Just because Chang Tung Sheng, Sun Lu Tang, Wah lun Choi, etc. was a great fighter, that doesn't mean that you are by default.
  12. the average joe is also not the best puncher in the world, and the tackle is a very common attack... lol, we can go back and forth on this all day. For all practical purposes though, we agree with eachother.
  13. I prefer muay thai also, but they employ similar tactics and train equally hard at serious levels. It's hardly a waste of time. As far as your comment on a 5h kyu bring a proficient, that's true - IF they are training to kickbox. The same goes for any style. If they are training for the format, then they have the potential to do well. As far as depth being attached - that may not matter. It depends on what you are looking for. If you want to become proficient quickly, depth is really not a factor...
  14. what part of arkansas? I'm in Memphis. We have fights here. Also, if you do any submission grappling, they have tournies for that in little rock. The fight cards in memphis consist of kickboxing, thai boxing and MMA. sometimes they will have submission grappling matches.

  16. That's pure *. Tell Tyson that y our teach hits harder than him. LOL. Low stance does not dictate power output. It will limit your mobility though. You aren't meant to fight in a low stance. You use low stances for structure purposes, internal development and endurance in the legs. you don't fight from the low stance... kickboxing is a sport, as is muay thai, as is bjj. But you are extremely deluded if you think they can't be used effectively in a fight. I didn't say a kickboxer would own a karate guy in the ring, but it's not far removed from the truth. Who wins will come down to training methods. And since the kickboxer spends his time trainin live and with hard contact against opponents and trains for the ring (conditioning, etc.) yes, he does have a distinct advantage. Those same pluses also carry over into the street.
  17. It's not that kung fu is ineffective, but some of the training methods are inefficient in terms of producing fighters in minimal time. CMA by design takes longer to learn. Another problem with CMA is what you just stated "try to attack my sifu". We don't really care what your sifu can do - what can YOU do? alot of TMA today piggyback off of others in their lineage - masters, grandmasters, etc. I don't care if you grandmaster is 300-0 in challenge matches. Are you? Are any of your si-hings? if not, then the product being produced now is not of the same calibe of the person being bragged about and is therefore irrelevant. This is no offense to you, Draven, and not meant as an attack on you personally - this is just a common thing seen in TMA today.
  18. That's not internal - internal in MA ususally refers to a different type of body mechanics. Internal styles generate power differently than internal, supposedly. However, that may not be the true definition either, as the term internal only dates back to about 1894. a few masters noticed several similarities between their styles of bagua, xingyi and taiji. They considered them part of the same family and began referring to them as internal. There is documentation of this, and is more likely the origin of the term internal.
  19. that's not really a mid-fight tactic though....pre-fight, sure. But, ideally you don't want to provoke him into striking, you want to diffuse the situation - unless you think that the crap will hit the fan regardless of what you do.

  21. I too have experience in both. Was your school competitive? I train at a school with VERY competitive guys - one of them was ranked #3 in the world a few years ago. I guarantee you, it builds stamina. you can say that boxing doesn't teach one to endure punches, but I can say that boxing doesn't teach you how to breakfall...
