  1. that guy isn't a kung fu master, trust me. read the comments. he is probably a beginner, and he trains at threat management institute, an infamous school known for its poor training
  2. tae kwon do is cool, but i would recommend karate
  3. I highly advise that you read the Karate 101 section at this site: https://www.24fightingchickens.com . Though you probably do not practice Karate, you will discover that it states something along these lines: Martial arts will help you get more out of what you already have, it won't give you the ability to magically defeat someone who is superior in all attributes. Yes, I agree with you that strength and mentality are very important. But that doesn't mean that the skills are useless. Martial arts skills enhance what you already have. PS. I don't think that the purpose of martial arts is to improve physical fitness. This should be done outside of training. I jog and do strengthening exercises outside of my martial arts school.
  4. modern wushu is flashy and essentially useless for combat. however it is very impressive to look at. i think that any northern style of kung fu is impressive on the big screen.
  5. i think karate is better. tae kwon do has too much emphasis on kicks. karate is more balanced
  6. I can breakdance, if you want regular moves go to https://www.bboy.org/moves and if you want martial arts related moves go to https://www.trickstutorials.com
  7. aznkarateboy.. im asian, i do karate, and im a boy
  8. I'm 13 years old. Do I qualify for a teenager?
  9. mexico, i said that they didn't teach kata that time. actually the school teaches kata, it just has a more heavy emphasis on fighting.
  10. i decided to take up kyokushin karate. Today was my first lesson. For warm ups, we ran some laps, stretched, and did pushups and weight exercises. Then we did 2 minute rounds punching this guy with a chest pad on who was screaming constantly. We used pads to practice punches, kneeing, and kicking. I noticed that Kyokushin emphasizes kicking with the shins rather than the instep. Also, there were no katas, but I love the class so far.
  11. diablo 2 its the best game
  12. what are the sparring rules at your school?
  13. i already posted this... look in the comparitive martial arts section
  14. First of all, I think that the common belief of a mugger being a better fighter than a black belt is wrong. However, "street fighters" (whether or not they exist in large numbers), are likely to be seasoned fighters on the street. They have what most martial artists don't have, which is EXPERIENCE. However, I still think that a seasoned martial artist would win against one. Here are the reasons. I will give them in the form of responses to common comments. 1) "street fighters can take pain". Many MAs, such as Muay Thai and Kyokushin, have full contact sparring and in Kyokushin, they don't even wear gloves. I think it is fair to say that MAists can take pain as well. 2) "street fighters can kick your nuts, bite you, and poke your eyes" So can MAists, and they have a variety of other weapons as well. And don't tell me that street fighters have better nut-kicking abilities then MAists. 3) "street fighters have been in more street fights than martial artists and therefore would beat them" yes most street fighters probably do have more experience on the street. However, the major flaw in this argument is that they are trained in fighting untrained fighters, such as unsuspecting babysitters and the like. Many martial arts, such as karate, teach moves that are directly related to self defense (such as defense against haymakers, pushes, and escapes from shirt grabs, headlocks, etc.). Street fighters are most likely not used to the seasoned and precise fighting methods of MAists.
  15. is it a good thing if a school doesn't separate classes by rank? is this a sign of a mcdojo?
  16. first of all i dont want to join the military and cant considering im 13 years old but that is not of relevance
  17. GreenDragon, I have taken other martial arts before such as TKD and found that I did not like the style at all. How can you blame me for attempting to find out as much information as possible about a school before going to it? As for my other posts, they are irrelevant and bringing them in does not aid the discussion.
  18. Many threads are posted on this forum saying that Traditional Martial Arts, such as Karate, are useless for self defense. I have noticed that most of the reasoning is one of the two: 1) They use forms. 2) They are traditional and therefore outmoded. Anyone care to provide more specific details on why these arts are "useless"?
  19. MODERN WUSHU SUCKS!! That is, if you are looking for self defense. Trust me, I have taken it and I have several friends who take it and it is purely for show! Purely!
  20. OK... I have heard many mixed opinions on this so here is a question and please answer with "Yes" or "No". Is Kung Fu (Hung gar/Hung fut) effective in a self defense situation? This is considering I train hard and daily under quality instruction.
  21. Having personal experience in both arts, let me tell you this. If you are looking for self defense... DO NOT TAKE THEM! My old wushu school taught only forms. It did not even teach individual moves... However if you are looking for acrobatics wushu is the way to go. My old TKD school taught exclusively kicks, which I find ridiculously stupid.
  22. which is more effective (in general) for self defense?
