Maeda trained directly under Kano, that I know. -

Maeda brought his flavor of jujutsu to the gracies and tgave them the foundation with which they developed their art. It should be noted that (even the Gracies say this) Maeda taught them the newaza from Judo primarily, even though he had experience in other arts (namely, jujutsu). It remains unclear why he called it jujutsu (probably not to conflict with Kano). -

For the last time, BJJ does NOT have better ground work than Judo. They simply FOCUS their training on the ground. Judo's ground game isn't even really a lot different than BJJ. I'm as much of a BJJ fan as the next guy, that's because I LIKE focusing on the ground grappling...it isn't because BJJ is better, its just different. -

I'm going to chime in again with a disagreement, but only partially. I think that if you want to LEARN ground techniques, and want to be balanced, Judo is by far the better option. If you have no interest in stand up throwing and wish to concentrate on groundfighting, go with BJJ. The difference is not the technique you learn, but the fact that you spend a LOT more time on the ground. As for the difference in technique between BJJ and Judo...there is VERY little. There is some variety due to philosophical differences between Kano and the Gracies, but the groundfighting is virtually identical, save for the amount of time on the mat. I've rolled with guys from both arts, and the best guy on the mat I've had the pleasure of going with was a brown belt in Judo. It just depends on the place you train, and what the concentrate on. -

When you say it like this, that's more accurate. Its all in the wording on the forums, since we can't see facial expressions or hear the inflections of the voice. While I wouldn't go so far as to say that a BJJ fighter would have a significantly bigger variety of techniques, the focus time that BJJ spends on the ground leads to a specialization you can't get from Judo. -

If you've got judo guys that don't think about choking through your jaw, then they don't know what they are doing. I take on pure judo guys all the time, and I've taken on some pretty good BJJ guys. The only major difference is their plan of attack. Neither one is really better or worse, just different. And before you say that I'm a novice, I've been grappling for a long time, and I've studied BOTH. BJJ is great, I'm not knocking it. In fact, almost anyonethat's been here a while will tell you I'm the one defending BJJ all the time. But to say that Judo doesn't teach enough on the ground, or that they concentrate too much on standing is a very ignorant statement. -

Modern Arnis, which was developed by Remy Presas. -

Thats the most ridiculous statement I've heard. Judo is notorious for standup. BJJ for the ground. The rules in Judo are sport oriented whereas the rules in BJJ are oriented more towards a fight. On top of that, only subs at the elbow and chokes are allowed in Judo. Why cant Judo fighters face facts? BJJ guys do all the time- when they want to learn takedowns, they learn wrestling and Judo. Why cant a Judoka just accept that for more complete ground work, he needs BJJ? Gumbi, THAT is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. I'll admit that SOME judo schools focus too much on stand up, but the ground game is very important in most judo schools. Remember your roots. Apparantly, you've never competed against a judoka...or at least, a good one. -
Arnis and how long it takes
WolverineGuy replied to Icetuete's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Arnis is blended quite well with any other art. My arnis instructor was a fourth degree under Remy Presas, and was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do as well (although I'm not sure of his dan level in tkd). If that truly is a bad combination, I'd love to see what he could have done with a good combination of arts, because he was incredible. -

6 second abs? Ab king pro? sit-ups? Spot reduction?
WolverineGuy replied to koreantiger81's topic in Health and Fitness
The fact of hte matter is, the average joe doesn't realize that spot reduction is a total myth. People want to look good, and their idea of looking good is having big guns and a six pack. How often do you hear people saying "hey, nice lats"? When in reality, you need a wide back to facilitate that V-taper...along with shoulders, pecs, blah blah. Its the total package, not just using the ab-wheel for five minutes a day. -

Judo newaza
WolverineGuy replied to goshinman's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Kosen judo is the closest relative of Fusen Ryu, but its not quite the same. -
Another good site is http://www.exrx.com. They have animated gifs of exercises, broken down by what kind of exercise, and what muscle groups they target. Very well orgainized.

Judo newaza
WolverineGuy replied to goshinman's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Subsequently, Fusen Ryu practically disappeared. The ground game began to dominate judo for a while, until Kano made rule changes to favor the standing throws again. I've read this one too. -

I've always thought it was important to build upon the basics, and keep going back to how the advanced techniques are related to them. It makes the advanced techniques easier to grasp, in my opinion. However, some of these relationships can only be seen with the overanalyzation you speak of.
