  1. All week has been like this, can't get to sleep before three am. BAH!
  2. Took me about three years. I've seen it take more, and a few have taken less.
  3. I was actually harder on my girlfriend for a while than the other students...my master instructor had to point it out to me lol. Oops.
  4. of Gi? I've got a blue Atama Gold Weave. Its a little restrictive in the shoulders IMO. Maybe I need a bigger size, or is that common?
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. Depends on the school. In Kalkinodo, we do Mister/Miss and last name for every dan rank below fourth. At fourth, its Master and first name. Judo, its Sensei for non master black belts. BJJ, instructor's preference.
  7. This is something I was trying to explain yesterday to someone, and I pointed them to Renzo's book. I think, even though it is basic, its a fantastic resource, if nothing else than due to that philosophy. It was a huge paradigm shift for me, really.
  8. I've stopped really training on a regular basis up til about a few months ago. As such, I've been a first dan for over a decade...this year I'm adding a stripe. Plus I want to hit three tournaments this year. Probably all going to be later this year.
  9. Welcome to KF
  10. I generally just go with that dojo's wishes. I don't make a big deal about my background (but being a black belt, its fairly obvious that I'm not a beginner). The only time I've ever had an issue was when I moved a few years ago, and the closest school to me was a Tang Soo Do school. They asked me my rank, and I told them. I asked what their protocol was and they seemed insulted that I'd even ask (I had assumed that's where the conversation was going, I wasn't insisting to wear my black belt, but my bad). Anyway, the master instructor wanted to see my certification, which I brought in, and then he informed me that they wouldn't recognize it (no big deal). The problem arose during point sparring. They were REALLY pushing me to go into tournaments, to which I responded that I'd go in, but I wasn't wearing a white belt for that, as I had done a ton of tournaments at the black belt level all over Michigan. I was then fed some line about how I was a white belt in TSD, so it was ok for me to do that. I looked at him straight in the face and said "or its cheating." Walked out at that point.
  11. I take a multi vitamin, protein shakes, creatine, and an NO2 supp. The NO2 and creatine help me with focus and energy during my workouts. Protein for recovery.
  12. My kicks are largely for show, I have really short legs lol In sparring, I'll throw kicks (mostly side, round, and hook)...side kick is the only one I really throw with the intention of scoring, everything else just sets up my hands. For real life...I guess it depends on how I'm standing. I haven't been in too many fights; the ones that i have been in were either pre-martial arts, or I threw a couple of side kicks to get the guy to back off of me. Now? I'd probably throw round kicks to the legs, or get in close enough to where I could throw the hands more, maybe some knees.
  13. Well, it's official, everyone in this thread is a nerd. It's a good thing. Nerds unite!
  14. I've had the book for a while. I picked this one, BJ Penn's book, and Fedor's book up at around the same times...Fedor's is the most well rounded, but Randy really breaks down the wrestling fundamentals well. Great buy.
  15. I'm glad I'm not the only person that had some doubts raised by the op. I will say this much, I know several police officers in serveral different precincts around the state, and none of them have heard of this, so apparantly I know everyone in the ten percent of police precincts in the US that haven't been trained in this system. Looking at the statistics, I'm reminded of studies of my favorite cologne, Sex Panther. "60% of the time, it works every time."
  16. Good post. More elaborate than mine.
  17. I have a 360...there is no such thing as productivity
  18. Disturbed, Saliva, Motorhead...pro wrestling themes are GREAT for working out...some Marylin Manson...yeah. My playlist is full of that stuff.
  19. Eh, I don't know about walking on the stomachs...but I've seen someone get a partner, lay down, and have said partner drop something of weight onto their stomach before...teaches you to tense up those muscles, helps you from getting the wind knocked out of you, etc. Never personally done it.
  20. I remember seeing Dan Severen pull TWO off in his second fight of the night during UFC 4...fight lasted like a minute...he knocked the guy out with the second suplex. Was unreal...almost looked like a pro wrestling match.
  21. I think we've all been there at one point. I know that I blanked on an intermediate kata on my black belt test....oy, that was embarassing. But everyone, myself included, got a good laugh out of it, and my sensei had a sense of humor, so its all good.
  22. I think that the double and single leg takedowns are probably easiest to pull off...then just pass the guard, or mount if you landed in side control. Remember with the double leg and single leg that you need to keep running through your opponent...natural instinct to defend is to sprawl. If you do that, you should be golden, since non grapplers have a hard time defending against grappling attacks.
  23. Forgive the generalization, but with the gi generally tends to concentrate more on solid technique...without a gi is a faster game with less grips, and luck sometimes has more play in it. Obviously this isn't entirely the case, but the gi tends to slow down the game, which helps beginners.
