Rear Naked Choke
Alan Armstrong replied to tallgeese's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Agreed 100x on your statement TJ-Jitsu.This technique (The rear naked choke) should be called "The Borg" due to resistance is futile! -
(Sorry to hear about the loss of your brother) My brother died in 2008. He was far too tuff for this world. When my mum was pregnant with him my father beat my mother to try to make her have a miscarriage; he survived and was born healthy. He grew as a pre teen enjoying food and as a child was fat, so people bullied him for it, he endured it all. At school due to being bullied he started to become very tuff, so much so developing a reputation for it, so people would test how tuff they are by fighting him, he never lost a fight and one night due to being undefeated he was stabbed; hospitalized but survived it. After that he joined the military ate alot more and looked similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger, was on active duty being shot at; he survived that, where some of his friends were not so lucky. He came out of military service married, had children and enjoyed junk food. The junk food lead to obesity which lead to being diabetic, which lead to being legally blind, to having gangrene, that lead to both legs being amputated and being put on a dialysis machine, he survived all this, as he was extremely tuff. His girlfriend looked after him and managed everything for him, while visiting him in hospital, she contracted a staffs infection and died; consequently she was also my best friend! He carried on without her for a short amount of time and died in his sleep. He lived many years suffering in his life being ill due to having bad eating habits. If he wasn't a tuff person but a weaker type he would have died many years earlier than he did; being tuff meant that he could endure alot, consequently this also understandably equates to much suffering, my mum buried him, which broke her heart and I was the one that buried her; hope they all RIP My brother's unhealthy lifestyle has made me change mine for the better, hope I can inspire others to live a happier healthier lifestyle also.

Usage of a Whiteboard
Alan Armstrong replied to Nidan Melbourne's topic in Instructors and School Owners
White Boards are great. Just a suggestion, to have the ideas outlined before explaining them with the dry erasers. As the ideas can seem to get dragged out and the students might fade out while the diagrams are being drawn up. Having ideas drawn out beforehand will give you a chance to do a more legible points to focus on. This way it will lead the class to concepts without rushing the ideas with scribbles and marks. Also pre drawn ideas cuts down on the amount of time your back faces the class, as this gives you the chance to point and talk while explaining your ideas face to face, which will help you gauge their reactions to your explanations visually. -
To loose weight of course everyone knows about diet and exercise; if it was just that easy. Keep in mind "The after burn effect" It is not enough to just burn calories while exercising. TABE will burn calories while not exercising. The difference is like jogging and sprinting. With jogging burning calories is slow while sprinting calories burn up quicker. Tapping a punching bag vs heavy hard hitting. Cars burn more fuel if a person accelerates fast compared to driving slowly. The story of the Turtle and Rabbit, which one burns more calories in any given day? Moving fast with weights burns calories fast, even while resting with the help of TABE.

Foam roller are used to loosen up tight muscles by sitting or rolling on it. The type featured here is hard, there is also a soft version that is intended for improving flexibility. These rollers soft and hard are becoming very popular throughout the world. Has anyone had a female Sensei in Karate. While attending Shotokan not one female student was present. While in many other styles there were female CI's and students. Has Karate changed with equality and diversity or is it still a male dominated activity?

Rear Naked Choke
Alan Armstrong replied to tallgeese's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
In none sporting events to bite the person trying to do a choke like this is recommend while simultaneously trying for a testicle gorilla grip with one hand and an eye gouge with the other. My neck is perfect for performing a rear naked choke on with the added bonus of a waist that can easily be V locked on to with the legs and feet. (This technique is horrific to be caught in) There is a window of opportunity to slip the head out of this situation in the initial stage by twisting the head in, chin down, pullout ... easier said than done. Better to hurry up and knock the person out first.. another easier said than done theory! -

Natural Body Awareness and Movement
Alan Armstrong posted a topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In popular crowded holiday destinations around the world, people stop to ask directions. Usually a map is visible and a finger pointing to a spot on it, then the initiated passer by tour guide looks down at the place to give some helpful advice to the lost tourist. There is a sudden motionless pose while deciphering the map and locating the spot on it, then without warning, the knowledgeable lacation finder, spins and flings his arm out and behind with excitement and conviction, hitting an unsuspecting passer by in the face. There is for martial artists (something hidden) in this story, that takes place many times during the holiday season, that pertains to the topic heading. Can you guess what it is? (There is no one or wrong answer to this question) -
The quadriceps are something not recommend using in fact avoid using them at all except at the end of the kick. Lifting the leg with anything but the quadriceps is recommend. Lifting the leg with the hamstrings lower stomach and lower back and gluts will help improve higher stronger kicks. Than pulling up the leg with quadriceps, rather lifting the leg with hamstrings is easier and faster with practice.

Cross training can cause internal conflicts also. To stand in two boats at the same time can make a person fall in to deep water. Something similar to a dog having two masters. Cross training can also be a sign of not being adequately taught in a style so as to balance out gaps, then to seek out other styles. A person that has a drivers license doesn't make them a race car driver. Many martial artists are comparable to road drivers and feeling inadequate cross train with another type of vehicle. When what they should be doing is stripping their own car/style of the unessentials and replacing standard parts for high performance ones. In other words spend the time understanding the nuts and bolts of the style, so as know how and why it ticks. Cross training with 100 styles a person will surely pick up some good points along the way, which would be similar to picking up the keys from a car rental; never knowing for sure what you are driving. Understanding the underlying fundamentals of all styles such as the mechanics of martial arts then driving a rental car to any type of vehicle is possible. When a grappler says honestly "I will eat a few shots before taking the opponent to the ground" Why eat any shots at all? Learn how to defend shots, then take the opponent to the ground. Many stand up fighters end up being caught in a rear naked choke. Then learn how to defend the neck, firstly by not giving your back to the grappler or anyone for that matter. Where the head goes the body follows, then don't allow your head to be controlled by the opponent; NEVER!

Testing for 9th Degree
Alan Armstrong replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
The three twirling drummer girls was visually entertaining with their colorful costumes but the drumming was very noisy for my liking, would have preferred music less thumping and more nature based with flutes and water feature sounds. The kata wasn't to my liking either, largely due to preferring loose, fluid, quickness than stiff, slow, jerky movements. The self defense section seemed very staged and unrealistic but this is nothing new in demonstrations of this kind. My opinions overall are none flattering, if it was entertainment for those in attendance and they enjoyed the day being there, I'm happy for them. My intent is not to be a killjoy of this occasion but being true to myself as we all need to be, I don't see why all the fuss for this test. Of course there was more to this occasion than the test, but in all honesty I'm not impressed with what was displayed in the video from start to finish. Fine to give another degree for recruiting 10,000 new members to the style, that for me is more worthwhile and believable. To add a new facet to the style or showing and displaying or explaining an extraordinary skill in the style such as a new kata or movement or theory, I would go along with that as a promotion also. Or saved a person from a burning building, heck give him two degrees and make it an even 10. -

Beginners are not going to know what is real applications in a kata, they are usually more concerned about learning and remembering the sequences than anything else. Applications will reveal themselves over time with the help and encouragement from the CI. Movements can be practiced separately like calisthenics which help muscle memory and could be an opportunity to show some applications. Practicing movements separately disguised as exercises makes it possible to practice them in public places. Applications for these MA movements can have many possibilities as a throw or a strike or any number of useful uses. If the student learns that he or she is only limited by the imagination of the user, then the student will start to grow in understanding and have a deeper appreciation for the moves. The student should start feeling the "Eureka Effect" as using the right technique will happen automatically from within; a magical feeling of learning while doing a movement naturally without consciously thinking about it.

If it was demonstrative, then kicking boards and falling down wasn't a good example of how to do it. -

Anderson Silva like many a Bruce Lee fan. For Silva to practice with Dan Insonato must have been an honor for the both of them. Ironic how Wing Chun is considered ineffective by none users, unless Bruce Lee is doing it. The real problem with the ineffectiveness of many Wing Chun practitioners is not fully understanding the benefits and gaps that all styles have.
-
you are kidding, right! there is no wing chun in the whole of silvers career. Not kidding.en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderson_Silva Anderson Silva practicing Wing Chun with Dan Inosanto.

This is a tall order Pink!

I like Silva for his Wing Chun techniques also. He has some very deceptive Wing Chun hand movements that compliments his Wing Chun kicks. There is alot of Wing Chun in Silva's moves, that he uses brilliantly.

Rear Naked Choke
Alan Armstrong replied to tallgeese's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Rear naked choke, probably the most efficient and effective move/technique against most stand up strikers. The part that is fascinating to me, is that the person being choked still tries to punch the person that has his legs locked around the waist and arms locked around the neck. What are they hoping for "A knockout" perhaps! -
Had a look at a "Beer Yoga" video on YouTube. Was full of vulgar language and none tasteful humor so linking it here is out of the question. There are also karate vs drunken style kung fu also on YouTube. The drunken kung fu fighters didn't seem very convincingly drunk, they looked more like badly trained, unemployed kung fu actors, looking for some quick bruises for some beer money.
