    The End

I have decided to stop going to my karate dojo. not because i dont like the dojo, or karate, but because i can no longer afford the time or money necassary as a result of school, the Navy DEP, and my car insurance (which means working). I know my sensai would rather see me excel in school right now than master the art of the empty hand. However i still plan on practicing at home, not advancing in kata, but just practing the kata i know and my kihon and training my body tll i can enter a dojo again. is this an exceptable method? Can i still be considered a martial artist amongst you, my piers? it is my view that the training and focus on only a few kata will be good for me. as ive said before, id rather be the best white belt in the world than a black belt who can be easily defeated. But i wont your opinions, fellow martial artist.
  2. now, now, i think we all have learned a lesson from this topic. never ask a martial artist about good movies because these were some of the worst critiquesi have ever heard in my movie going life.
  3. i think im going to apply for membership with ARMA after my eighteenth birthday, ill purchase a practice sword (probably a wood or blunt foam) and start studing there system. I can continue with wood ill im on base, if nothing else i can even take a portable TV, my VCR and my practice weapon to a park to train. ARMA is cool, they focus on self training and inexpensive methods of learning, i like that. Yet its still controled and they dont let quacks go around teaching, they have rank testing just as strict as many asians martial art schools. there also laid back, not all freaky like some other martial schools can get about 'our way or the highway, the founding master is the equivlent of god', but there still professianal about it. the best motivation though is what happended today! i talked to my grandfather in ireland, and he was really excited that i wanted to study, and perhaps even try and rekindle (as this is ARMA's mission) the european, specifically, the celtic sword. he told me that our family owns a sword that belonged to his great grandfather, a shorter claymore, twenty four inch blade, its over 4 hundred years old! its been keep in good condition and has my familys crest on the blunt of the hilt, he says if i demonstrate profeciancy with the sword he will hand down the Cox sword to me. Its so cool! its like something out of a fantasy novel or something! like the old swords with the crazy names that demanded so much honor and stuff. i just dont want to rush in quickly and burn myself out soon. I have to keep level headed, and approach this like i did isshinryu. Ready to learn.
  4. point very well taken. also combat is a bit more obviously effective or not than medicine. I often wonder if the reason all the good combatarts are so old is because people had a lot of time on there hands then. if they had time in asia they sure as hell had time in ireland. im really excited about this! i want despretly to look for a school a start training but its not that simple. im leaving for navy boot camp in july, then going to A-school for three months. so i wont begin training till im comfrobley in a duty station. the advantage is anything that can make money, espicially schools of abstract learnings like martial arts of all forms and...ummm....pottery, can be found near or on a millitary base, young sailors have no rent and have money to spend, its either gonna be on a hobby or a girl one so they figure 50/50 chance right? hell they might take the martial art to meet the girl, thats what i did. But then theres disadvantages, a place to stow my weapon if i cant afford rent and im on ships company, the fact that my training will be interupted by 6 month deployments on sea duty ect. in the words of the orcs "were theres a wip, theres a way"
  5. this ones really sweet to, this is way more information than i hoped to find. its cool the way there actually calling it a martial art and all that, its kinda like 'revenge of the white guys' or something, like there saying 'asians wernt the only ones that could kick &*%$@#' though still i wonder about that concept, i love it, and i hope and do belive that my heritage had some could fighting method behind it, but we are talking medevial europe. can we trust the same great philosophers that said taking a bath would KILL you?
  6. wow! sweet stuff, thanks Bdaze, ill check google to, but this is definitly heading for my favorites! lol@JerryLove, took the words right out of my mouth. actually if i look for some recreational society than it shouldnt be that hard to find, there all over. To be honest, im doing it more because im a fantasy writer who focuses on ireland in his world creation more than i am seeking celtic sword for self defence (little unpracticle wouldnt be?)
  7. im taking isshinryu right now. i plan on taking one striking art (isshinryu) one grappling, wich will likely be a JAPANESE Jujitsu, and one sword art. but for my sword art i want to escape from the orient and go back to me own roots. So i want to learn celtic sword, not tai-chi or samurai or anything kendo-y like that. What schooling if any is available for this, what are the diffrent forms (if there are any) of styles for celtic sword? if irish diferetiates from scottish and british id be espicially intrested in that (for i know the swords differ) espicially irish sword, thats what im really after.
  8. i dont think my style studies it, why? what harm can it do?
  9. this tournamanet allows kiai's, in fact i plan on using it to my advantage, sensai said if i can put the fear of god into my opponet as soon as they say 'hajimae' ill be able to read how my opponet reacts and have a better shot and getting through his defence
  10. what is proper ettiquitte for both kumite and kata? i mean, do you typically say the name of your kata just before bowing in? do you bow first to the judges, then the ref, then your opponet? ect.
  11. bull. Though they disguise it under political bueacracy if you look carefully all the feminist have done since the very beggining was try to assimilate male roles. I think there deffinitly should have been a feminist movement but they went about it all wrong and now its controlled by bleeding heart lesbian liberals whod never litsen to my ideas anyway because men have no right to any kind of opinion. In the end, the feminist movement despite there man hateing worked out to mans advantage, now the women are taking care of the children and the house and going to work and the guys are sitting on there as*ses, some great movement. The one time i got the most steamed is when during a debate on my schools team about abortion i was told i had no right to give opinions because i was a man and had no control over the decsion anyways. that burned me up. first off, this is america, i have rights to opinions in any subject i want, and second, i dare any women to try and make a child without a male, i think youll find it dmaned near impossible. but then i could have just told you that in 6th grade family life. so gee, i guess im kinda part of the process after all huh? oh well this got way off topic, im sorry, just a subjec tthat really gets me going, ill shutup now.
  12. im not a seal but i am in the US navy DEP program and am applying to be a SWICC, which basically commands the smaller combat boats that go in for close attacks on land and other vessels as well as do seal drop offs. no seals in training wouldnt be here but after graduation what makes anyone think there any diffrent from everyone else? sure they are elite but reguardless of what you might have heard they have lives outside the navy and have hobbies, its not unlikely we'd have one or two here.
  13. oh yea! bart your good at this, finnaly someone with professianal argument/debate experince. first let me tackle the last part. it is relevant to the thread because like in a court case were often times the definition of a single word like 'unaware' is the key between inocent and guilty (this happens alot, thell debate for days what one word in a clause means) it is essintial for us to understand the diffrences between men and women if we are to understand why women are targeted with chivalry and not men. i can not speak for valitor, so i will not try. i could also go sevral ways with this. i could explain the scientific research conducted to show how men and women have diffrent thought patterns and use diffrent parts of the brain. but i wont, because then id have to abridge it into something that makes since. so until valitor can respond to this ill say he simply reefers to the diffrences we all know about but choose not to say aloud because they are now considered politicaly incorrect. men and women are diffrent. there is no point in saying we arnt. its obvious. women on a general basis can not do everything men can do. and like wise men cant do everything women can do. (unless your Arnold Schewzenager) The big problem with the femminist party is that they belive proving them selves as able to do everything men can do makes them equal. will you femminist are working harder, not smarter, you should instead say its possible but then highlight the things women do well naturally and make them more important than the lies society has told. and im not saying cooking and cleaning because honestly, ive meet few women who could cook worth crap. The fact behind my statement was, if we are to understand that men and women are diffrent we will understand why women are treated with 'chivalry' as you all like to call it and not men. I really hope valitor comes back to say his point here so my giberish actually makes since. But just a curious note thats way of topic now that im steamed about the feminist thing: why do women want to be like men anyway? were slow, inflexable, narrowminded, accident prone, hormone driven, never in control of our own emmotions, and generally stupider than you!
  14. it means just what it said, your attempting to ignore it, thats why you said 'whatever that means'. as if you dont know.
  15. you know guys if we ever meet just please note i can open doors by myself but if you really want to help me out could you loan me like, ten bucks?
  16. yea, sai's post was lvely grand, but off topic, intresting since shes the one whose supposed to stop threads from being off topic. im just messing with you sai, because this is the first time i think ive ever disagreed with you about anything. not because of what you said, but were you said it. this topic is on chivalry, which despite what i have said, what sai has said, what fenris said, what we all here have said, has nothing to do with politeness. if you read the actuall code of the original chivalry, you will find it contains a lot of things about politeness and all that hoplah, and a lot of other stuff you probsably didnt expect or know about, some of it may even appal you. for instance, according to the code, its okay for a guy to have up to 20 girls! also, its okay to pronounce your crush on a married woman to the world, and to try and seduce her. its what we call Courtly love, but with a twist on what hollywood tries to make it. technically neither party could act on it but the seduction was still there and encouraged. true chivalry is not practiced anymore today or at least is rare to the point of oblivion. none of us have adressed what chivalry really is, includeing me, because we are stuck on the idea created by N. america (much like how many aspects of karate were screwed by the USA) of chivalry.
  17. perhaps you are right but all i have to go on is what i have seen. i have seen my male friends hurt and victimised while the females i know still reign victories in there own private little worlds, and i see myself three times screwed over because of my own nieveness. (is that even a word?) sometimes i honestly wonder, and this will sound really bad, if women were not put in a lower position socially than men on purpose, by god or fate or whatever you choose to belive in. simply because without that controling factor, the fact that women are seen often times as inferor by society, even by other women, is the only thing that keeps the universe in balance and keeps them from getting so out of control and tyranical that we all end up like little slaves to some femminist party. i actually wrote a sci-fi story about that called colony 178, were the women ruled the earth and men were used like drone bees, that would mate and then be slaughtered, the number of male babies born was controlled geneticlly to keep there numbers down. pretty extremist i know, and im not gay. all i know is what ive seen, if i honestly see something to prove me otherwise, than great! actually i really hope i do...
  18. yes, isnt it? but dont get to teary eyed monkeygirl, because i changed my attitude abit when i learned about a couple of other skills woment have. The ability to lie mercylisly, to decive with untangeable levels of cunning, to void themselves of emmotion for there own personal gain. god like women may still be in my eyes, but ive also learned that in many religions, gods are often feared more than worshiped.
  19. i had a diffrent reason for practicing chivalry, when i did. It wasnt because i thought they were weaker at all, but because i found them superior. Women are the worlds crowned jewels, and i dont mean that form of respect for a sexual reason either. i found them generally superior mentaly, more agile, with higher pain thresholds (youd have to have higher painthersholds for childbirth and menstral cycles and stuff, guys would go insane and start killing themselves, we just cant handle pain, despite what we might like to personify) and of course, they have the ability to bare life. The female body is much more beautful naturaly than the male. again, im not saying that from a guys sexual stand point but any artist could tell you that, guys bodies are clunky and odd, women tend to curve more. And often times they simply have the ability to be more skilled at many things than us guys. So my chivalry was almost a sort of worship you might say (but not to that extrme) i give up my seat because she has earned it. i open doors because they deserve a red carpet i just dont have one handy so i must make due, and id go out of my way to protect a women because im just a sperm cell, im expendable, but we NEED women. at least thats how i felt about it then.
  20. im the jerk off that has the only no vote in the poll. i used to be a very strong beliver of chivalry and practiced it very religously, but then i came to a relization. there is no since in trying to be a gentelman in a world were we have run out of ladies.
  21. this really ticks me off! by the time i enter naval intellegence (July next year0 all the fun international terroris will already be found!
