  1. Well I don't think they don't work, because the first kung fu I ever studied was far more effective than the previous MA's that I had studied. My experience with Kung Fu is a very different one from most people I guess.
  2. Yeah Drunken Monkey, Kung Fu San Soo is famous for not working. LOL!
  3. Hey SevenStar what's Shuai Chiao?
  4. Even if you've always thought that way it's still refreshing. Yeah, you're right about finding schools that train like that. Our school I think is an exception to the rule. I wouldn't be there if it wasn't.
  5. Outside, arms length and inside. Some blocks are useful, but they need to be accompanied with a counter similtaneously. In my experience of TKD, Lima Lama which both derived from Karate, are taught very mechanical ways of fighting. Karate blocks and attacks are usually always linear which is a limiting way of fighting. If you have time to think about blocking, why not just move offline and shift back in with a kick or strike, etc... Never understood the Karate mentality that's why I left.
  6. Genbukan Budo Taijutsu is the only other one I know that's good. There could be others that I don't know about. I'll try to find out from my teachers.
  7. O.K. let me rephrase. Not all MA's, the majority of Asian countries that have MA's stem from China.
  8. Thanks for the info. Opinions, that's all we have. Oh well.
  9. About the belt color. You earn it as you go. The more posts the higher you go. By the way I have a friend who's black belt in Kajukembo. It's a pretty ferocious MA.
  10. Chinese MA's is where all MA's stemed from. Chinese MA's are awesome, but not many people are teaching it's true application.
  11. Good I'm glad to hear, that's refreshing. You're right there is no guarantee. Actually you are correct in what you say and I feel you are one of few on this thread that give intelligent responses and I appreciate it. It's all about learning from others. I was just trying to make the point that Combat MA's (the good one's) have a lot of useful tactics and techniques to offer and if the training methods were up to par with Sport MA's we would all be whistling a different tune.
  12. O.K. so it's the training methods, not the system of fighting that's the key to effectiveness. I would now like to hear a resounding Amen. There is a God we've finally made a break through. So by that logic if the training methods of Sport MA's were employed in TMA's the good one's it would be a different story altogether. Yes.
  13. No Kano's Judo guys were Jujutsu before they were Judo so they knew things the Jujutsu guys lacked and the Jujutsu guys couldn't use strikes in the tournament. Strikes are a huge part of Jujutsu and was concidered too violent after the Unification of Japan. Besides we don't know how big or small they were and if the Judo guys out weighed the Jujutsu guys. For your information, when Americans started learning Judo they excelled faster because of their size. So size has a lot to do with it. But with real Jujutsu in a real situation you equal out the equation with a stick or knife or whatever it takes to survive. It's just a different MA better for real life, not better for competition. Is that so hard to believe, or have your instructors fed you a bunch of lies. I hear it all the time, that Traditional stuff doesn't work. How would they know if they do something completely different? By the way the hand to hand was used by Police and they used a Jutte instead of a sword. These guys were fierce and could control and subdue a Samurai even against a sword. They may have mauled them in tournies, but the Judo guys would have been sitting ducks in the battlefield.
  14. Oh so I shouldn't bother studying weapons? What are you saying? If you train to have a bad * attitude you will eventually meet up with someone that is going to kill you. I train in an MA that teach weapons and how to counter them, it doesn't mean that I won't get killed or hurt. It just means that I will be more cautious and have the knowledge that if someone is attacking me he's probably concealing a weapon. The thing is that guys like you who study for NHB think nothing else is effective. You keep believing that, it's better for people like me that you believe that. By the way we do weapon defenses constantly, it's one in the same with unarmed techniques. That's how it works.
  15. So by your logic, if you practice it you will use it. So if you don't, you won't. I totally agree.
  16. SevenStar if Combat MA's aren't better suited for Combat than Sport Arts why did they use them in past battles. For example, Fuedal Japan. If they weren't any good than why are they even around still being taught and why were they past down generation after generation.? It's not like these people compete and make money promoting competitions and fighting tournament where gambling takes place. These worked and still work. Yes weapons are a big part of it, so what. One on one fight with no weapons, sure what you are learning is fine. I'd rather be safe than sorry and know exactly how to use a weapon than not. Iiado is great but it is one piece of the many parts of Jujutsu, Real Jujutsu. Concerning conditioning and training, are saying someone can't run everyday, eat right, spar, do bag work, and constantly do drills to make them better? What difference does it make what MA it is if the person is highly conditioned? There are more than one way to fight my friend. You are buying in to the whole NHB fights as if they are the holy grail of Martial Arts. Guess what, it is not. They are things you simply don't know. There's a lot of cockiness in those arts, that kind of attitude will only bring you trouble. You and your heros aren't invincible. You should realize that.
  17. Boxers shadow box (punch air), and do bag work. Why do they do this? Because both are necessary. Hitting a bag helps you work on power and shadow boxing is good for speed and transitions to different punches. If you don't get it by now I'm going to be shocked.
  18. Tokebowl Maybe Ju-Jitsu is for show, but Jujutsu is for maiming or killing. Come to our class for a free lesson to see if it's for show. You live in LA, were in North Hollywood come down we invite you.
  19. Yeah, but if you see the shoot coming in you can move and simultaneously shove him to the side, just don't move straight back. If you are unlucky enough to get caught go with it so that your resistance is gone. Grab him around the neck (like a guillotine), do a drop and launch him over you, keep rolling and presto, you should mounted on top of him. There's a lot of other nasty stuff you can do as well. If someone with cauliflower ears attacks me the evil will take over. He's got 2 choices: Kill me, or die trying. I assume that someone is trying to kill me or why attack me in the first place, I didn't do anything to merit being attacked by someone I don't know. I was ever thinking about competing I'd crosstrain more, but I'm not really interested in competing. Most people that will be dumb or crazy enough to attack you are probably not prize fighters. Usually these guys have more respect for other people and if they don't there's always hidden weapons.
  20. Geez, both are necessary!
  21. Yeah, a year is way to short for anyone to earn a BB with no prior experience in any other art. Even if someone did have prior experience it would still be a very short time to earn one. I have always understood that a BB represent that you have full proficiency of the MA, it does not signify Master level. Depending on what system you study it should take anywhere form 5 to 10 years to earn a BB. In the end it doesn't really matter what belt you are when Mastery is your ultimate goal.
  22. Yeah, pepper spray! Now your talking! But you can't run and leave them behind. You might have know a little about multiple attack situations just to escape. No one is saying you can take on multiple opponents and beat them. You should at least study multiple attacker scenarios to have enough knowledge to get you the hell out of there.
  23. Do a little experiment. Have someone hold a kicking pad and let them punch it hard. Then when they least expect it pull it away and see what happens to their balance. Both punching and kicking air and bags are necessary, they both teach different things.
