How many MA schools do you pass by?
Titanium replied to JR 137's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Society wants a quick-fix pill. There's no substitute for hard work, and once that reality slaps them in the face, they're out. It's like the quote Mike Tyson said (can't remember the exact origin or eord for word): "Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face." Exactly, I like Dojo's that teach it as an art and not merely a sport. I think the Dojo reflects on the art - some Dojo's may simply not want to teach the art but only the sport, this has an effect on people who want to learn the art. My goal when I am driving is to differentiate between 'real' and 'fake' Dojo's. -
Shotokan have lots of books, but I think it is because Wado is younger.

Thank you for your reply. I'll look into it, I have found a website called monabooks.co.uk which you may find interesting. They do all Martial Arts books. I will avoid Mark Cody's for sure, I prefer the proper sources.

Questionable instructor ranks
Titanium replied to Ronin72's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think it's rare to see 9th and 10th Dan masters now; at this level you are very old/elderly. 6th, 7th and 8th Dan senior ranks are very commendable. There are a lot of fake black belts in the UK too who self promote; this is absurd. In my eyes, this is a disrespectful gesture to genuine senior ranks and the art. -
Another idea is to ask your instructor if they have any gi's available. My Sensei gives some older ones away if people cannot afford them.
-
What a great post. Thanks for sharing. You never think of it like that... Very interesting.
-
Trailer not available in the UK yet, however I cannot think of any reasoning unless it is a replacement part.
-
That's a valid and solid point!! The right tool for the right job; goes down to make that smart decision, therefore, nothing can replace solid experience/knowledge. Bruce Lee once said... "...Then, you better train your entire body." Some wisdom's there, I believe. Indeed, very wise words. Bruce Lee has some very good phrases for life.

Legal problems due to belt rank?
Titanium replied to joesteph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That's here in the USA, too. Burglar falls through the skyline window while trying to break into your house...hurts themselves...goes to jail...sues you...then wins. Good Grief, Charlie Brown!! I know, wheres self defense anymore. I think politicians and courts see us, martial artists, as violent people looking for fights - we train because we want to protect ourselves and learn the art. My question is this, "Will they ever understand?" To the bold type above... That, my friend, is the Million Dollar Question!! Wish I had the answer because I could use a Million Dollar about...right...NOW!! I wish I could understand too. I hate this picture that people paint of martial artists. I know that the vast majority of practitioners wouldn't hurt a fly, like me; however we possess the skills if we ever need to. This should not be hard to understand. -
Loyalty to one's instructor. What does it look like?
Titanium replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Your sensei is a very wise person; why should be stop at one but not learn from others in the spirit of the art? -
A lot of senior Dan grades have at least (in my knowledge) trained in other disciplines too. It's good to mix and use them to advance ones primary style.
-
Can anyone recommend any good Wado or general karate books? I have just bought Wado-Ryu Karate Uncovered but in search of my next; any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Finishing a black belt
Titanium replied to frankunderwood's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Some who do transfer do not stay, you're correct. I think transfer should be allowed only if it is the same discipline and can prove that they are at the grade they say they are. A black belt out of training is only good as a white belt in training - this is what I think as some transfer because they think that black belt is the end. Black belt achieved you are at the start of the path. A little off subject there, however if transfer is granted, I think a demonstration of knowledge is required. -
Its a nickname one of my fellow karateka's gave to me. I was competing once in kumite and another bo demonstration was happening at the same time; the bo flew out of one of the trainees hands and hit me in the head cutting and fracturing my skull. I didn't know it had happened until I looked down and saw my white gi was now red. I never felt a thing, so my club named me Titanium and bought me a gi with that stitched into the fabric. That's cool...not the ouchy part, but how you earned the name Titanium!! So, I suppose your fellow karateka's think that you're hard-headed, huh? Thanks for sharing that with us all! My pleasure, they sure do. It puzzles new member to the dojo, they actually think that is my name. That's funny!! I know, its quite awkward explaining the story when they think it is my name.

How many MA schools do you pass by?
Titanium replied to JR 137's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If that indeed is true about the MA is a dying interest over in the UK; that's depressing at all levels!! How is the MA a dying interest in the UK? There seems to be less people interested in it anymore. We have member beginning all of the time and they think they can get to the top in a year and this is not so. If you tell some new member which I see that they will not be a black belt in a couple of months, they will not train but find another Dojo who will (for the right price ) make them a black belt in a couple of months. When I say its a dying interest, I mean for serious practitioners, not just people interested in having a black belt around their waist. My Sensei always says, "Its the person in the belt that matters, not the belt itself". -
Most of the Steam games work with an xbox controller (or other controller though most come premapped to the xbox buttons). I play GTA on pc with xbox controller. Depends what you like playing though. I play a lot of strategy type stuff which tends to be point and click with the mouse and keyboard. Ah I see, sounds good.

I agree, Sandan or above. I'm not sure Shodan or Nidan have the experience. I think potential karateka's like a sensei who has a high Dan ranking. -
Very true; I think its all for show. It's basically like Bruce Lee and the kicks he did in films; he said its for the camera, in a fight, a real fight, I would use hands not kick or shouting. Same applies to some weaponry too.

Study on long term effects of push-ups on MA Seniors?

I am under the understanding that some karate organizations adapt its form from other MA's. I think is good as it displays adaptablility; I find Wado closely related to Judo with throws. All are different though.
