  1. Sorry I am not sure but have you checked this site? They have a list of most katas by style. http://www.blackbeltwiki.com/forms
  2. Very good Job. Keep up the good work!
  3. Congrats!!!! Keep up the Great work!
  4. Congrats and Thank you for creating this wonderful forums. The community that you have built part of the future of Martial arts.
  5. Solid post!! Birthday parties are good! I do them...our Hombu does them...many, if not all, Shindokan dojo's do them. However, the reasons that we do birthday parties isn't to pad the bottom line because I believe that that robs the spirit of the birthday party. Have fun...eat cake...open present...play games...drink Kool-Aid...a wholesome harmless party. We don't charge to use the dojo for a birthday party because...well...we just don't. The reasons we do birthday parties is to get to know each other away from the floor. To show genuine interest in the student body, the parents, their friends, and so on and so forth. Expressing social graces costs absolutely nothing. We celebrate a Testing Cycle, and think nothing about it. Why not the same thing for a student that's just turned 7 years old, and wants to have the birthday party at the dojo/Hombu!! I think it's vital for the students to not think of the dojo/Hombu as a cold and dead place. Albeit, a vibrant and exciting place to want to go to aside from daily MA classes; get those all year, but a birthday, well, that comes once a year. The dojo's there to train in a MA, but the dojo isn't a cardboard cutout of a time long gone. No you have the right to be irked by it yet I have to agree with Sensei 8 and Patrik. We all have our own views on martial arts and what we want out of it. Plus kids love these thing's. It is something fun for them and has the potential to market and or network so you can possibly make some new students from these events. We are in a world where you have to get your name out against the big mcdojos that have a full advertising budget. The only thing I do not agree with is the honorary Black belts given out by some of those that do these. That is just my opinion on it. I honestly was like the original poster and completely against yet helping my sensei get the word out and advertise my dojo I can see that anything has the possibility to get your name out. I have chosen to ask if he wants the help and he agreed to it. I am just better at the Facebook and other digital mediums to get the name out than he is. I know off topic just rather explain now then get a bunch of questions. I love the art and believe we need to connect with the kids/teens/adults out there and using different mediums attract different groups of people.
  6. $99.99 I wont be getting any time soon.
  7. No!! That's because I believe in our curriculum, through and through!! More or less belts wouldn't make anything better or worse. I agree because more or less belts don't really do anything for us. Money is nothing when it comes to learning a valuable lesson. Double solid post!
  8. I am glad to see that I am not the only way that feels this way. You used the same thing I was going to say with boxing.
  9. Might be a better designed arm then what he originally had. If they programmed him for combat. It may be an arm like what Luke has just a robot version.
  10. I will say it looks cool. As others have said these doesn't seem to be very effective. This is were I have to ask the question what is your personal MA Journey and beliefs. Do you like trick/extreme sports MA's this is for you. If you want traditional MA then go else where. I believe everyone one has there own journey and different things they want to get out of it.
  11. It's just a name. Valve is the parent company (like Microsoft), and Steam is the product (like Xbox). Like liger said, probably just a theme on the names. AHA...thanks liger and Danielle!! I thought I needed a machine that worked off steam...that might be kind of cool! That would be fun.
  12. I honestly don't know off the top of my head. If I had to guess it may due to the original name of the full company was named valve. Sort of the water theme.
  13. Hey, I have faith in YOU!! You strike me as someone who trains for a purpose, and not for just a season. Remember this, I'm always saying that the difficulties are not that of the style, but of the practitioner itself!! Train hard, and train well!! I agree!
  14. Win or Lose its all about learning. I wish you good luck and have lots of fun! Let us know how the experiment works.
  15. Sorry for being late on this. Happy Birthday!!!!!
  16. The pair I have works perfectly underneath gi pants. I would recommend these to all new students personally. I did a tournament kumite were we did muwashi geri at the same time. My leg hurt for a week. Shortly after went and bought shin guards and have worn them under my gi for any time we do free style sparing.
  17. We use it mostly before class. There is a class of using proper technique to the bags as an actual dummy of sorts. Other times when we had a few kids we used freestanding as kind of a "fun time" for the kid to keep interest type things. I wish we had more time and could put a regular time for using the bags. I personally like using them to work on proper technique and actually hitting something. Yet I am weird. For now they are every so often class time (after kihon, kata, and kumite or in place of kumite). I'm kind of mixed on whether I want to hit a heavy bag or not during class (not counting a formal/scheduled conditioning class). I don't go to the dojo to "workout." Yes, I get a good workout through kumite, kihon, etc., but I go to learn. I wouldn't join a dojo that did a lot of cardio or even strengthening stuff. I want to learn. I'd join a group exercise class like Crossfit if I wanted the group workout. I look at it as class time is learning time, and open floor time can be hitting a bag time. Maybe I'm just weird. I have no problem with anyone thinking differently than I do. I'm with you JR, our dojo is a high school gym, we (our karate club) have a heavy bag there, but it doesn't get used during class, maybe a play around beforehand while waiting for everyone to finish their stretching. I have my own at home for those sorts of sessions. I feel like I explained that wrong. We only do this once in a blue moon. I was just trying to explain what we do when we use it. My sense is like you guys that believes mostly in the 3 k's of martial arts. We honestly do the basics streches, some basic pe level pushups/situps/etc for warmup and kihon and kata and kumite make up most the class time at this time. As for the use in class I personally think it should be done a little more than my dojo does. I personally have found that working out is part of what I consider my way of karate. To improve ones mind (kata, kihon, sparing) and body(working out, kata, Kihon, Sparing). Sorry for any misspellings its been a long night. I do love seeing everyone reasons for why so I can completely understand Jr. Also I personally don't believe anyone is truely normal. That would make the world a boring place I feel like I said personally to much sorry. Just trying to say that its in my opinion and I am tired.

  19. The main dojo we train at is a basic padded room with a hanging punching bag and a free standing bag. We have a small desk that has random things that is needed for later. A on the wall book shelf with several good karate books mostly kata books though. We have a small shelving thing that has extra sparing gear for newbies and those that can't get there own gear. One of the students got a blow up punching bag from walmart for the littler kids and for just fun punching and kicking. It has a electronic censor on it. The 3rd punching/kicking "bag" It's a class room in a old high school turned into a community center. The place were I mostly go is were my instructor guest teaches. Its an old dojo(may be in the running for oldest in my city). Basic really comfortable mats on the ground. It's mainly a judo academy. A couple of places for a hanging punching bag. We sadly only have one here at this time. It has a place for a weight room. Basic weightballs in the main room. Sadly this dojo is falling a part and may be shutdown soon. The owner that lets others train isn't doing so well. I love this dojo too I just wish its location was in a better side of town.
  20. Depends on which dojo location I go to. The main local branch is in a small town that takes back roads to get to. So none for that one. And the in town branch depends on what way I go. Most the time is 0 until heading home in which its 1. Long story short on this one is we have the main building that is in a small town on Mondays and Thursdays. On Sundays my teacher guest teach at a dojo in town on Sundays. Ironically were he guest teach was the original location for us long before I started.
  21. I wish I would have thought of this. Thank you for finding!
  22. I love steam. Deathtiger
