I Gave Away Ki-Jutsu Secrets

You win! Want to come back with something else yet that's all I have right now. -
I personally like the idea of training both sides so no matter the situation you can be effective.

When I was white belt I had the "buddy that invited me to go to class" taught me a good lesson in keeping my hands up. He would aim for the top of my head. Not really hard yet enough to be annoying and feel it. There were a few shots that hit me in the face. Its part of karate. If you can't block you are going to get hit. As for people quitting it seems to be loss of interest, loss of time, too much repeats of the basics. Some people just want to learn how to beat people up quickly and when they learn it takes time they go to a faster route. Then there are the people that think they should be higher belt before they are ready to be and quit because they are advancing to slow especially at green belt level. (Green in my school is right before brown.) Even if its half way or less it should be a good sign of progression if you can get past this rank since normally at this point the grading is extremely harder than before.

Assistant instructor left to open new school

Glad to see there are more like mine. -
I agree with your post. Nothing wrong with it, so long as the people there are happy and well-informed. But then again, most people aren't well-informed about a lot of things, myself included. Just because they're not my cup of tea doesn't mean they're all worthless. Everyone has the right to do as they wish. I wonder though... Do most students at McDojos know its a McDojo and are happy anyway, or do they think they're at a true dojo? If they're oblivious to it, I wonder if the dojo I train at is a McDojo and ignorance is bliss 😂 Its seems to me that the best answer for that last question seems to be YES! Its probably a little of both and/or one or the other.

Assistant instructor left to open new school
liger replied to skullsplitter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This one is weird to me on the fact that people find it weird that people want to stretch out on there own and open there own school. My teacher wants us all to be able to replace and/or start our own once we are ready to. He wants us to be able to replace him if something happens to him. The idea of a non compete in martial arts seems contradictive since isn't your goal if you are an assistant instructor to start your own at some point. Now for the close part seems a little close yet how big is the town/city they are in. Was it the only place for rent that was a reasonable price? We are a little weird and believe in all local schools getting along. Yet that seems to be the atmosphere of most of the local dojos. -

I have thought about doing that, but I've been out of the game for almost 10 years, just now getting back in. I'd feel like a fraud. Maybe Once Ive ranked up a little in karate, which I just started.... It'd be nice to see more of an intellectual presence on YouTube, too. If you search any art on YouTube, the first 100 results are "this art vs that art" and it shows 2 really poorly trained artists duking it out. Same here. I would love to do it yet being an under belt and only 4 years in I feel like i may not be the best for this. -
I agree. This is why its quality of the teaching not just price. This would be why I said on all my points before that they may be a sign yet not all the time.

I know this is an old topic yet i had to post I love the video. Sometimes we just have to relax and have fun. My favorite part was the Darth Vader Neck Choke Anyone that gets mad should watch it all the way to the end. -
Karate Podcasts

I have thought about making one yet its not time yet. I would almost say you should make one and have people you know and people from the forum join you for their opinions and more. The only way to spur more is to make the genre of karate podcast popular. -
Very good in depth descriptions JR!

McDojo in short is a dojo that focuses only on money and not on the art itself. There are many sites out there that give a warning on what it is. Some signs of a McDojo: 1. Kids with black belts and/or high level dan black belts: I can't say this is a 100% of the time yet most the time it is a sign of a McDojo. 2. People making up there own style by combining multiple styles together is another. Just like 1 this is a sign yet there may be a few legits out there. The biggest thing of this is can it be traced back in lineage of the different combinations. 3. A lot of belts and/or Stripes on belts ie: Camo belts or 2 or 3 levels of different belt. Like the last can be a sign yet not 100% of the time. 4. the list goes on.

I personally love using a punching bag to try my techniques on. I think it is good to have something to test and feel if you have and power and proper use of each hitting/kicking technique. Just how I feel about any punching bag. For the speed bag I haven't personally had access to one so I can't judge one way or another.

Welcome to KF; glad that you're here!! Being invited to class is how many join in the first place. Nice that your family and you train together. Thank you.

Ryobukai for about 5 years. A friend of mine invited me to come hang out and try it. Sounded fun yet ended up being a lot more work out that I expected especially sparing. Yet 5 years later I am so happy to still be doing it and having the family join in. I don't plan to stop any time in the future.
