My silliest reason why I didn't come to class was.......
liger replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This would be me! We used to train at a high school that had an awful carpark that was on a hill and an absolute nightmare to negotiate. The car park was always packed with limited spaces left, I've had to go in to training before to request someone came out and parked my car for me!! Same -
MA uniforms as Street wear
liger replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You're in luck. Century MA Supply Company out of Oklahoma City, OK has gi pants that come with at least 1 pocket. I also believe that AWMA out of Philadelphia, PA also has gi pants that come with at least 1 pocket. In addition, Century MA Supply Company also has "gi" pants that are Jeans with about 4 pockets with a built in gusset like a normal gi has, and, Chuck Norris modeled them for Century MA Supply Company in their catalog when they first hit the market. Sweet. I need to buy me a pair or 2 just for normal training. That way I feel right while driving my car. On a note about stains. Yeah have to go with a darker color gi for risk of stains. -

I love the idea. I just need on with at least 1 pocket though. Just my personal preference. Yet I love this idea. -
Students criticising my class
liger replied to WorldKarateka12345's topic in Instructors and School Owners
First as you said do not let these kids get under your skin. Letting yourself get angry about it means you have already lost. Perhaps sit them down and have a question/answer session to get to the exact reason why they are criticizing. Then you may be able to answer there frustrations and yours. I would recommend a good book on karate by Gechin Funakashi. Karate-Do My way of life it has some very good perspectives on karate that may help this situation. It may be a good read for them especially if they are older. Upper belts should be respectful and understanding how ever if they have an issue with something they should be able to go to you and voice and talk out there problems in a non disrespectful way. I am not an instructor just an upper belt. If anything helps let me know. -
Reason you heard why "we don't wash our belts?"
liger replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
None other than it can be hard on the belt if washed wrong. It really depends on material on that. -

Look forward to reading this. No one in my circles use it yet I have seen it on a few shows I watched. I wondered why they said it.

Solid post!! Yes. Do this. It's important to see how you fit in the culture of each gym. Agree with both of above

A question on belt testing...
liger replied to chrissyp's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
The only way I could see 1 year testing extremely effective if you go back to only a handful of belt ranks. Like white, brown, black. And even that at that rate would be to soon for this limited amount of belts. Yet as for most Americans we like being able to retest a lot sooner. I personally like the idea of every 6 months for the basic belts. That way if you do mess up you don't have to wait a full year to do it right. How ever like what was said before giving a whole year to retest or test means you have a full year to prepare between belts. -
hahaha, what kind of classes you teaching!? I am not surprised at all.

New Parent Question: Must purchase dojo's sparring gear?
liger replied to Rochambeau's topic in Equipment and Gear
I have to go yes and no. Me personally I haven't seen it as an adult. When I did what I did as a kid I honestly don't remember. My mom took care of that back then I just remember doing a few classes. I was very unfocused as a kid. I feel kind of bad now about it especially where I am now in martial arts. Yet back on topic my nephew is going through ATA Karate and I think his mom said she had to buy a bunch of sparing gear from them that has there logo on it. I didn't ask if they made her to or not. Was not my place. I hate to ask what was the style they are teaching? As an insurance I don't know. I would think as long as its official sparing gear from somewhere it shouldn't be an issue. Have you googled searched this? -
Finishing a black belt
liger replied to frankunderwood's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Was he part of a larger organization? What style is it? If he was part of the organization and reports belt rankings there is a chance. Yet most likely you will have to start from the begging. If he/she wasn't part of an organization the best thing you could go to the dojo's around your town or close to you towns and talk to the instructor to see what they will do. Sorry I really don't have good news about it. -
Would it be ok if I share this with my instructor and post it on mine and the dojo I gotos facebook page? I guess I am asking if its ok if i share this.

Congratulations! Keep up the good work!

Just going to say YES!

I would have to agree with his definition of kihon. First you normally start out with how to do the move. When you do this you try to explain and show why the move is done in the way it is done. Depending on the teacher determines how fast you get into full on applications of this move. For example age uke. My instructor when doing the age uke will do an over the head strike till you get it right. As we progress in just kihon he will go through all applications of said block or punch. He likes combining blocks with akkiado techniques. I have heard of someone from the dojo long before me that was getting pushed around trying out advanced techniques in a sparing match. When he went back to the most basics of basics (for him block attack) he actually won the match. The basics if taught right can be a very powerful thing.

Ninja Warrior has been massively popular here in the UK which is basically a parkour/free running/obstacle course type show. I could imagine a 36 Chambers of Shaolin type show where martial artists have to pass feats of agility, strength and breaking a lot of roof tiles (people expect that kind of guff). Probably wouldn't bother with the red hot brazier at the end though. Kung Fu Quest sounds great, time for a letter to Channel 4... It's semi popular here. Its on nbc every Monday and then reruns twice a week. Ninja warrior. I like the idea of the shaolin show too

That's a fun way to do them. Very relaxing.

I found I did do that at the begging. The new fellow students seem to do the same thing. I also wonder if it may be our faults to some point. When we teach by example the first kata do we do it to fast for them to assimilate every move. Perhaps as advanced belts/ and black belts we could do it at a slower speed so they see every movement. Another thought I have is when learning a new kata have you ever gone to fast without thinking through every movement? I find my self doing that sometimes and have to regroup and slow it down. Even starting half of the kata over if i make a mistake till I do it right. This could also go into how do we teach kata. Some like to show it then have them work through it with students. Some just work through it with the students. Some even have were they tell you the moves to make while first learning the form. I personally like the watch then do it with the instructor and upper belts. That way you can see the whole thing then work through it yet thats how my mind works. Yet i think the 1st and/or 2nd steps that i listed should allways be done slow so every movement may be able to be seen by the student. Note: I am only brown so I am trying to chose my words carefully on the naming of teacher / advance. And in my school we upper belts help the lower belts. I personally like being able to do this. Sorry little scatter trying to get all thoughts on paper.

Karate Kid Part II
liger replied to muttley's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Yeah there is a lot that can be said about this. My quick opinion is situational. sometimes you have to strike first to be defensive especially if they have any kind of weapon. Just quick thought, if someone wants to start a topic would be a fun read. I honestly want to see a 2nd of the new movies too. Just needs to feel like this one.
