yeah go for I tried my first open tournament a few years ago and I tell ya it is an addiction getting ready for the same tournament again this year plan on trying weapons this time going to try this one out in the weapons kata, this is an early version I need to make a new recording but I love doing bassaidai with a bo. Putting them on you tube is actually pretty easy and setting the privacy is just a click if I remember correctly. I use my phone most times. Gekisai dai ichi is a neat kata despite it being a relativity basic it looks nice too. OSU!

OSU!! Ya can't just start a book in the middle ya know. OSU! Agh but you can. You just won't get the full feeling for the book and truly know where it's going. And i say why even try to read it then lol. I think some folks put way too much emphasis on linage *cough* whing chun *cough* lol but i think it has a meaning at least in just knowing where to look.OSU!Agreed, sorry I think I messed the quote thing up, I'm not really good at it. Needs practice, I must have skipped to the middle of that book as well haha. no problem! yeah I will pepper my statement with this warning ,I am a absolute karate nerd lol. OSU!!

Training as an Instructor...
Oshishinobu replied to ashworth's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think if you are honest with your new instructor and let them know you come with an empty cup as it were they should be fine. I am a assistant with my club but I train other styles as well and I just let the instructor know my experience and just listen to them. if an instructor get an attitude with you than you know where not to train. Their ego is feeling threatened and personally i would not feel safe. As martial artist and instructors I feel it is our responsibility to understand other arts as they play into our core art. You will find so many similarities in the other arts and than be able to bring that understanding to your core art. OSU!! -
In the ISKF after 2 dan you are able to apply for the instructor training. The course is 6 years and contains many requirements in technical knowledge of Kata,Kumite ,judging, and competition rule sets. A large focus seems to fall on study of physical health and some Karate history I know at least in my semnsei's case he wrote many fine papers on joint health and mindset. Ho0nestly I think this is a good set up it was set in place by Okazaki sensei.

I know my sensei uses a shureido and he loves it. I think he uses a middle weight. -
Best Heavyweight Kata Gi - suggestions please...
Oshishinobu replied to sampionce's topic in Equipment and Gear
Personally I am 6'2'' 311 lbs and I love my 10oz Ki Mugen gi, they offer them in 12 and 13 oz as well. I have had mine for over 4 years and it is still going strong. http://www.kiintl.com/1/catalog/2-Mugen-Karate-Gi-orderby0-p-1-c-254.html -
Personally I see liniage as a "tracking number" we can see where the "style" as it were has been. I love to look back at Shorinryu and see the original versions of my kata if only to get ideas of possible applications. Through my styles linage as example I know my sensei trained with Yokota sensei to shodan and continued his training with Sensei Field who he feels is his snesei. In turn Sensei Field trained under Nakayama sensei who in turn trained under Funakoshi and so on. While in the grand scheme of things and when the rubber hits the road this information is meaningless it allows me to understand the progression of Shotokan that I have been given. I think people hold linage as some kind of badge saying "I trained with so and so so my karate is better than yours HAHAHA" (please insert Shaw brothers era voice track and music).

OSU!!! Go for it, I have been working toward the same thing just I am trying to get under 300. GOod luck and keep to it!!! OSU!

I have never trained in it but I have seen some of Macarthy sensei's stuff on line. Always thought it looked cool though giving a little more life to drills is never a bad thing. OSU!

I have to say, and mind you this is not a "kobudo" weapon, but I really love the English military saber, the foot work starts in a loose kokutsudachi and you transition into a leaning zenkutsu to strike. You advance with sugiashi the whole process plays really nice into my karate. I have to say once again my second favorite and to be honest I( am split is the European long-sword. once again atleast in the Fiore system the foot work is so similar to my karate. in terms of "kobudo" I would say Sai is up there but I have been having a "love affair" with the bo.

Which direction is this/that?? If I might ask. He is being more open about teaching kata applications, and focusing more on having people perform kata based on application and not aesthetics. That is a breath of fresh air. So much of kata nowadays is so focused on winning tournaments as though I need to tell anyone that here lol.

Sounds good to me, cut to the source and call them out. I had herd these guys were on the sketchy side but man. interesting though brings to mind the premises to a old school shaw movie lol

That sounds like crap. That is what I think. What the heck. OSU!

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall...
Oshishinobu replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I always love to look in the mirror, sometime my body awareness is off and it is nice being able to see just how much I suck lol Video is useful as well. Personally I think you are correct mirror's are one of the best things to keep in a dojo. OSU! -
Ever get those days when you feel like you're going to die?
Oshishinobu replied to ozm8's topic in Karate
Those are the days your body feels like jelly and you are smiling from ear to ear. OSU!! that is a good training -
OSU! As Welcome brother from one sotkan guy to another! OSU!!

Karate seems to be focusing on power more and more and beefy guys will gravitate toward that. OSU!!!

I have had 12 oz in other brands and I loved it, the only issue was with wear, the seams started tearing out. I had a 12 oz tokaido and it sadly fell apart. personally I like the Orange the 10 oz. is perfect and it has a nice snap to it. OSU!

It's good to have the larger fellows, we make a dojo fun. I mean who else in the sensei gonna "test" a technique on lol. OSU!!
-
I think the prevalence of my beefy brethren in Shotokan has to do with the sheer number of shotokan schools around. if you look for karate in any given metro area the majority of schools besides TKD are shotokan. Honestly I think if we look to Karate in general in the U.S. in particular, and this could be more with our national diet, the karate world is filled with large dudes. OSU!
