OSU! The idea behind this post is to exchange and discuss bunkai motivators. A bunkai motivator is a statement or concept you use as a trigger in figuring out bunkai. One I like is " think like a school yard bully" by this I mean think how to attack someone in the dirtiest and meanest way possible using the frame work of kata. One example is the fort kick to kosa dachi and down ward uraken from heian yondan. The way I see this is a good kick to the stomach and then moving forward stepping on their toes and striking to the nose. Simple and straight forward easy and mean. The opponent is reeling from the meageri and than you land with all your weight on their toes and pop them in the face. This sets up the finishing hip throw. So do you guys have any fun motivators or just any fun bunkai to share? OSU!

Which Kata Best Demonstrate the Core of your Practiced style
Oshishinobu replied to Kanku65's topic in Karate
There is a big difference between knowing a kata and really knowing one in its very bones. I know the 15 Wado Ryu kata but I really only properly know Kushanku, Naifanchi and maybe Bassai. Kushanku is the reason for the Pinans and represent the very core of the style for me, if I had to limit myself to a single kata that would be the one. Each of the other kata add a few techniques until you get into the really different ones such as Niseishi and Jion but Kushanku has most of the basic kata techniques. OSU! I completely agree, I "know" most of the shotokan kata but I focus on only a few. I think you have to have a understanding off how to use each movement and be able to adapt the kata to multiple situations. A lot of times the kata isn't a straight forward "do this and this" but more of a general " go this way with this feeling". I see bassai uke as someone a kin to this idea. The kata wants us to cut off the attack the movement itself can be a "block" a throw or even a thrust with a bo but the main I sea is to move forward and cut off the opponent. OSU! -
Which Kata Best Demonstrate the Core of your Practiced style

OSU! Howdy from ISKF Northwest! Personally I have found that I love doing bassai series and the tekki series. I like to fight closer range and I find tekki is a perfect kata to draw from. Bassai dai and sho are just plan fun. I am a big guy bit when doing bassai dai/sho I feel like a badass. Picking a favorite is hard though as I have fallen in love with Gankaku! OSU! -
OSU! Howdy brother I personally practice Shotokan but I have a buddy who does Goju. The styles are different but you should have no trouble adapting. The movements don't change to much so the kihon you learned before should be easy enough to modify. The stances are shorter and they don;t use the kokustsu dachi you are used to. instead thy use Neko ashidachi. All in all you will have a great time Goju is a fine style. OSU!

Why does Green Belt have the biggest drop-out rate?
Oshishinobu replied to Shotokannon's topic in Karate
In my world, the words "Bored" and "Karate" don't even go in the same sentence! =P OSU!!! Absolutely the moment I hit the dojo the fun begins but I have seen it. Mostly in younger folks and those who are lookin for the kung fu movie. OSU! -
Why does Green Belt have the biggest drop-out rate?
Oshishinobu replied to Shotokannon's topic in Karate
Osu brother congrats on 8 months. I have been doing shotokan for 6 years and I have loved every minute. Going from orange to green the student is thrust into the Intermediate range. This advancement brings with it expectations. The green belt is beginning to get into the more advanced kata and working on more ippon Kumite. I think some just become intimidated with the new things to learn and some just plan get bored. OSU! -
OSU! I like your definition. Chi or ki what have you has always just made sense as something intangible. Ki is the spirit of Ki. OSU!

OSU! here is one "the samurai sword could cut through the barrel of a gun." Oh another European swords are heavy. European swordsmen were unskilled and would simply bash at each other." "the one inch punch is really an empty force technique." OSU!

Osu! This is a myth I was told when I was kids and I tell ya I was sold. "To be a black belt you had to kill a man." Oh and one that I am not sure where I heard. "to buy a copy of black belt Mag you had to prove you had a black belt." Ya know to like a club. OSU!

Thanks you guys, it is really fun to do it. After i learned Bassai sho it lit a spark and I decided to try dai with a bo and after just playing with it the kata just fit. I had leaned a little Kali years ago and one of the ideas behind kali is that the weapons and open hand are the same moments so I figured why not karate. OSU!

Bassaidai is a fun kata with the bo. It works really well and is rather intuitive. this is a video I made a little while ago and for some reason that day I had a stutter on one of the chudan strikes I have since fixed that. OSU!

Hi everybody I am a shotokan karateka with the ISKF in the pacific northwest and I train under Sensei Ken Kraisler. I have been doing Martial arts for 8 years and karate for 6 of those years. I recently started practicing Italian long sword in the Morozzo system and I dabble with Kobudo. I used to post on Kyokushin4lifr and still do occasionally but I haven't had time recently. I am happy to be here and always happy to talk about Karate OSU!

I have started this last month with a school teaching Achilles Morrozzo long sword. I find it though a bit different from my karate actually helps me. I find myself trying to adapt drills we do at class to my karate and working with one of my sempai we figure out fun empty hand drills looking at the sword drills. OSU!
