  1. Thank you, please take your time, no rush here. What you'll also workout (as TKD student) is this will help you, as in your ankles a great deal! Once you can run through a kata in your mind without 'stumbling', actually do the kata in the real world. Keep your eyes closed. Do the kata slowly as not to punch walls, units etc. this will develop your spacial awareness. More mental strength and discipline!
  2. hahaha! I watched Bruce Lees 'Enter the Dragon' and wanted to do stuff just like that! So I went looking! Got it seriously backwards, I walked into a Judo club not what I was looking for .....no punching or kicking! Fun but not what I had seen and so wanted. Years later a friend directed me to a karate club, I walked in and 'ta-da' punching and kicking ..great! What I didn't understand that there were different Ryus/styles, to me it was guys in white suits making funny noises form time to time doing the same stuff I'd seen on TV! So I'd have to say "I found it!". and I'm glad I did.
  3. But I have seen people dropped/winded with a single punch to the solar plexus. One key reason to strengthen and tighten the abdominals. Though i agree that for 99.99% of the time doing Karate is the best way to get better at Karate ...sorry, one of my pet hates.... it is ranked as low as; "hitting wood prooves nothing!" sit ups have a value...a real world value. sit ups stop you as the target becoming a crumpled mess on the floor! ref above video. Situps there value, simply put they are priceless!
  4. almost! Mai Keage - is a stiff leg kick using the whole leg as if one solid piece. The knee does not bend. Take a long stance (formal stance) In my ryu of Karate, Kyokushinkai this stance is called Zen Kutsu Dachi, (other systems may have a different name.) It looks like this: http://www.karatetest.com/kyokushinkai/10thkyu/zen-kutsu-dachi-25.htm The kick, well this is a Yoko Keage: (easier to see the 'stiff leg movement') http://www.karatetest.com/kyokushinkai/7thkyu/sokuto-yoko-keage-72.htm The host site is: https://www.karatetest.com Its a good site as it covers Kyokushin karate the art I study, I use it as a reminder of what this or that is. The important point is the movement from the full formal stance to the high kick, so you were close but its the whole movement rather then to just kick that is important here.
  5. Then may I suggest some practice standing on one leg, with your other foot held next to the standing legs calf...but with your eyes closed! Swop legs after 10-30 seconds if you can make it that far, just keep doing that. In your mind start thinking things through, that punch that kick you were doing the other session and so on.... As time passes extend the thoughts to full on kata, move through the kata in your mind! Sounds mad I know but this forms the basis of mental strength and discipline. ...and always enjoy what you do! Have fun!
  6. Cool! One thing that came to mind was a telling off I had some weeks back regarding situps! Crunches - I lift only my shoulders up and tense up. (To work the upper abs) 'Sit ups' - I sit up to about 45-50 degrees for the abs (generally), higher than this does little to nothing for you other than move your hips. 'Full sit ups' - all the way to the top and back again, and so the telling off I received! So I don't do them anymore! Leg lifts are always good, best for the lower abs, no doubt about it. Leg lifts around an obstacle (a chair or stool) from vertical lower to a side, do not touch the floor, lift to vertical and lower to the other side, repeat. You can do them till you fail, then rest 24hrs at least! A big 'do this always' is rest no gain if the muscle is not rested, all you do is burn muscle tissue not build it. Kicks as Yamesu said are great for lower abs, do do these, aim for at least a chudan height. (Not sure if you have a 'still leg kick/kearge but do that.) kick straight legged for as many as you can manage, round Up to the nearest 10. Swap legs do the same, but aim for the same total of your fist leg. Now go back to the other leg do the same kick as Uchi repeat as before swop and then finally repeat but as Osoto. The different leg movement will help as much as the shear volume of kicks done!
  7. Ditto! What Yamesu said! Some more stuff to consider! http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/abdominalcorestrength1/a/NewCore.htm http://uk.askmen.com/top_10/fitness_top_ten/53_fitness_list.html
  8. yes! (to my shame) these are the phrases, terms I've been trying to find when trying to explain why I'm asking about kata tempo etc... Budo & Omote to me this translates as kata spirit, kata tempo.... not "when performing kata, you must think like the fastest gunslinger in the west!" Or "your a big lad, do everything with full power show how strong you are!" Budo, Omote......the art in Martial Arts!
  9. JASmama, speak with the other 'adult' confirm the given details, then be clear with your reasoning for seeking that confirmation state to the other adult your desire to report this and have action taken to address this. Ensure they understand that they as the witness will need potentially stand up in whatever forum the action leads and follow this through to its logical conclusion. No one here (as complete strangers, from different ethical and moral backgrounds) supports what was done we all condemn it.
  10. I agree with you Bushido_man. As the head or senior in the room 'they' needs to control the rest of the room and that is done with respect & presence, not violence. That is not a discussion that is fact. In another thread somewhere in this forum I made a comment about kids yours and theirs and how emotional things can get etc etc, any parent will go to length they thought they would never reach when kids are involved. This does include over active imaginations as to what actually happened, or was done. I can honestly say, hand on heart, I have watched and even had to restrain persons from going to far because a kid was involved in something and was pulled up on whatever it was. This to my point of view includes playful 'kicks' to the backside with a comment 'get a move on'!, to full on shouting at them saying "are you stupid what were you thinking?" To my favorite, the arm grab to pull one child off another....... and guess why that had to be done? A certain 'red mist' clouds peoples minds and there view, is this incident truly about a kick done with full on malice, the point of it to hurt/cause injury? Or maybe a kick to 'shock' ? or simply a small child kicked by an adult witnessed as the kick ended? edit: ((some not all) Spelling mistakes corrected)
  11. With the post from 'Kusotare' in mind, when you say Is this something I can take to show that the black belts if demonstrating this or that kata, would if all were blindfolded, If timed would all finish at about the same time'ish? What I'm getting at here is I've said speed when that is the point of the kata, power if that is what is needed, and here you say: Hence to me when you say this, the senior grades, because of the 'additional' knowledge of what, why how or why this is done are following the katas demands, fitting to its spirit...its tempo! Shihan Liam keaveney http://www.bkk-uk.com/Profiles.asp has in various workshops talked at length about 'studying' kata. Then in detail after asking us for what 'we' thing is or is not the point of this or that element, given direction to the true purpose of the element/kata as taught by Sosai Oyama and Hanshi Arneil.
  12. Absolutely, do speak with sensei, a lesson I nearly learned the hard way! One time because I didn't speak to the sensei of the dojo I was in, I was nearly 'banned' from training in his dojo.
  13. 30/9 lite warm up - a few sit ups and pushups. Stretching. Rest of the 2hr session dedicated to hand combinations mixed with hiza geri, all at full power. x2 punch combinations x3 -------"------"------- x4 -----"------"----"---
  14. take your time don't rush, you have a whole life in front of you! Enjoy it!
  15. So if this is to be considered the 'correct way' then this is to say 'its tempo', no? That said, that means a kata no matter what one, who does or where it is done will be completed in about the same amount of time taken by the person also called 'tank' as it was by the guy named 'stick insect'? Neither faster or slower than the last demonstration. This is to say kata has a tempo, a spirit that is the kata as it was back inthe day it does not change? At Open contents in the past,I've watched Shotokan kata and a kata called "tekki shodan" ..was done fast, a Shotokan friend explained that this was the point of this kata... speed ..... it was meant to be done as fast as possible!! Yet another Niji Shiho was more sedate with certain focus on power so keeping a clear (even to me a low grade kyokushin student) rhythm and tempo. One kata was to be done faster than the last guy, yet the other was being done and should finish at about the same time as the other guy!
  16. From this thread: http://karateforums.com/post499341.html#499341 Different views on kata and its performance came out. the poll asked what you think? In this thread can I ask why you think it? Can you support your view with detail etc etc too? I say in the other thread, that Kyokushin kata have a known time measurement, in this way to finish the kata the demonstrator of the kata is seen to have been fast where needed, shown power as required, to have committed to the kata and its teachings, to have executed the kata correctly. To finish faster is to indicate a lack of power, or even to have missed a movement. To finish slower is to shown you have been uncertain, hence slow and not understood the kata.
  17. I'll get a copy...soon'ish. honest! ...just not sure when kind'a busy...but I will honest!!
  18. 26/9 A lite session. 1hr 20 min general warm up. 40 mins dedicated to sparring. (Knockdown fighting)
  19. Many posts and chats here as else where talk about how Shotokan and Kyokushinkai are alike. Some things I've read and sadly even a few things I've had to endure and/or experience show the level of passion some have when the topic of conversation takes on a history perspective. Then to move into one system 'copying' the other and what must it be like to be 'only a copy'. Its no secret, one does owe much of its foundation to the other, as all MA systems owe there existence to much older Chinese arts! Anyway I came across this a while back and have from time to time wondered if there is a Shotokan version (as it were) or any other art for that matter. https://www.karatetest.com Do I use the above? Yes as a visual reminder a way of keeping the name and shape clear in my head. (as well as in the right kyu grade as well. (Kind'a helpful, after a 15 year break ..ye' old brain matter is not what it used to be!)
  20. 25/9 50 push ups knuckles 50 situps 50 Russian twists Endurance work. 20 mins - Gedan mawashi Geri (heavy contact) 10 mins each leg 2 mins - fast gedan mawashi geri (pure speed no power) each leg 20 mins - combination, various punches (Body shots) 45 mins heavy sparring.
  21. 23/9 Worked on endurance. 8x10 sets each named kick working both sides. Kicks 1. Mai, Uchi, Osoto Keage, Jodan, Chudan and Gedan Mawashi 2. Hiza Ganmen, Kin, Mai geri 3. Ushiro (with a gaku to complete the movement.) (Both legs, x2 twice (We had two count fails which requires a restart of the set form the beginning...which was nice....)) Then we moved to punches, feet swopping left then right and back again, (ten strikes swap ten strike swap again and so on.) 5 main punches x10 swop sides x10 swop sides, repeated 10 times. 1. Jab (target the shoulder) 2. Gaku (lower abdomen ) 3. shita tsuki (side attack ribs mainly) 4. Tate tsuki (abdomen, ribs, forearm) 5. Gaku tsuki body shots! 30 min heavy sparring (half power)
  22. As Yamesu says, better to heal rather than damage yourself long term. If you really REALLY must train then do lite training. kata and kihon but to be honest, you've hurt your rib(s) there really is no lite stuff you can do that does not risk making things worse. Hot baths, to help relax muscle and stimulate blood flow. maybe consider Calcium and Vitamin D supplements, these are long term things but worth looking into, no they will not turn you into 'Wolverine' but they will add some strength to your bones. should reduce the chances of such injures being picked up so readily.
  23. hmm...can we have a poll on this do you think? Some people post to support speed, to get to the end faster than the last guy.... Others to demo power and full basics and others support the traditional tempo! I'm interested to know if this variance in approach to kata in this or that Ryu is the true 'way' and documented in some way, or is it a change created from competition or something like that. Sure I've trained with other Ryus, true I never graded with any of them, but when performing kata I moved as fast or slow as the group in this way i didn't stand out as much as I already did. But in doing this to be told I had run the kata well as good as the others! IFK - kyokushin kata is done with a known time to complete the kata, its tempo. This is documented in the kata books and the way we are taught any kata in any dojo.
  24. That looks good! Nice spread should work well, very close to what I do.... MON - Kyokushin class. TUE - Dojo work (alternate club)/core work) WED - Kyokushin class. THUR - Running/core work FRI - Endurance/running/kata all [Low grade kata to high then back to low] SAT - Rest day SUN - Running/swimming (if time allows) I'm working to stay in the middle weight division, put simply I'd prefer to be a heavy middle than a light heavy weight. Endurance work is something mainly comes via the dojo last night sensei had use work massively on endurance, were spent a large portion of the first half of the session just doing kicks, and more kicks! The front row was eight people each counting ten. Kicks were, Mai, Uchi, Osoto Keage, Jodan, Chudan and Gedan mawashi, hiza, kin, mai geri, ushiro (with a gaku to complete the movement.) Both legs, twice (and two count fails so a restart form the beginning! ...which was nice....) Legs felt like jelly. (I need to work more on core I think, easily half if not more of the Jodan kicks were chudan!) Then we moved to punches, most of them working feet swopping left then right and back again, ten strikes swap ten strike swap again and so on. 5 main punches Jab (target the shoulder) Gaku (lower abdomen ) shita tsuki (side attack ribs mainly) Tate tsuki (abdomen, ribs, forearm) Gaku tsuki body shots! Been a while since we've done that! Sensei explained that this was now the 'main core' of our schedule as we get closer to the 16th!
  25. Looks like we might have a 'game review' thread before long! I wonder if A certain sig might read afterwards: "In Life and Death, there is no tap-out...just a kinect!"
