  1. Push up aid(s) 1. Buy/borrow two shed handles/garden gate handles. 2. Cut/prepare two small boards (15cms x 25 cm) 3. Attach handles to the boards. 4. Do a push up! Enjoy!
  2. after correcting a previous posts date! 30/7 Arms: 2x 40 Core: 2 x 50 Kata Circuit training. 1hr
  3. Change the view here, from a sport personality to say the movies/tv. Consider this who did more to revitalize Sci-Fi? Gene for Star Trek or George for Star Wars. 'Best' is a subjective term its measure is mainly down to the opinion of the voter. Here Bruce is the best (IMO) as it was him that opened the worlds eyes to Martial Arts. or Was it Chuck Norris for his ability and fame in the sport.
  4. hmmm... A karate master died aged 70, so to loose 10-15 years would suggest he could have bene 80-85! Another Karate master (still alive today) is 78.....so should he die now, he would have been of an age from 88 to 93! Consider the expectancy of any human: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy umm....we really sure we want to subscribe to such .... research? p.s. 2009: Lu Zijian on the 2nd January became the oldest person in the world and was 116 years old. So he could have lived until 126-131 years of age? .... but he got a book published ! That must be worth a bit of loose change! Agree, see the value or worth in this, want to consider another sport or less active life....? ...nah! I could fall under a bus tomorrow!
  5. 29/7 Core Legs knockdown techniques - legs attack and block
  6. ..so lets review! So I suggest there was a poke in the eye! Was that her heel or all 5 toes do we think?
  7. 26/6 Short run , about a mile or so, adding a 2 mile walk. 1 mile there and one back. 28/8 Short run , about a mile or so, broke the run up with 50m sprints as before adding a 2 mile walk. 1 mile there and one back. Kata. Finished with hot bath..!
  8. Cool care to share? I'm aware of the samurai warrior, I even have a foggy memory about some kind of Judo test a little like the 100 man, I think? But others sorry I've no idea and really want to!
  9. ...and why not? It works for you so you should! However, as you say "selling belts monthly promotion" I see no positive here. We work hard, we achieve what we set out to do.....we pay for all of this with blood sweat hard wok aches pain .... Hmmm this is the right way for me! (Maybe I'm nuts but that is me)
  10. Cheap CHEAP!!! Nah! I would suggest a traditionalist !!! I'd love to have a tree in the garden.......just I'll not live that long to use it! Easier to get a 4x4 post and some bricks! Here's another DIY piece of kit.....as it were! Sand bag! Slung low ...about shin height in a frame, allowing it to swing freely. Now kick it! Think kick boxing and conditioning!
  11. So we say self defence...we say Karate, JUDO, ....... What about no training..... Nothing like a good kick and poke in the eye! http://videos-mdr.com/en/2013/07/21/cette-femme-recupere-son-telephone-vole-comme-chuck-norris/ laughed my socks off! Osu!
  12. Sorry been rude and completely not attentive to your reply. Easier. is far to often the thing we (anyone that is) seek, when it comes to martial arts its so alien so not like anything we have ever seen before...well is this correct or not? Its only when we experience another school (dojo) that we see and learn more and begin to make our way in the arts. Any art, even the 'wee con yu' arts will be whatever the student makes of them. As many students of the arts will tell you the more you put in should mean you get as much or more out of it! There is a dojo (as I indicate in my first post) near me, I've no interest at all in visiting them for any reason. I was made aware of a person who accepted the opportunity to learn from them (as a new student) and sadly after paying good hard cash first they were allowed to sit at the side and watch a few lessons, then join the line and learn. They came to me one day, no special reason , just visiting all excited and full of beans, told me what they had done ! I took them to my dojo, introduced them to sensei.... ....and I quote " in three lessons I have learn more then I did in a month with them!" How do such people get off ripping off the innocent?
  13. huh! Seriously not sure I follow the thinking here! (not picking a fight or poking fun...just confused I guess!) Grade = Heavy GI... erm..what? pardon? Why? The GI being heavy or light etc is to my mind down to the person, there comfort there confidence, there 'feeling' when fighting is all that is important! A GI was, back in ancient times, merely training attire. Then later badges to display your affiliation or family were incorporated. I've always worn a heavy GIs from day one as a 'White' belt. Once I tried a 'light' GI and all but ripped it off after one lesson. It stuck to me like glue ..I could hardly move in it! Ggrrrrrr Then as now the GI I ware is whatever I choose it to be, the only restrictions is color and advertisement stuff/logos. (as in none) A GI is white or natural unbleached cotton. Maybe I'm just sensitive to the 'control' aspect/feeling I get from this question.... grade = heavy Gi ...sorry sounds like the control nuts have taken on a little more control than appreciable benefit here.(If any to honest) The student alone is important, if they feel restricted, hampered they should be allowed to change as needed. It is there face or ribs or pick a body part that is important, right? So long as the GI is smart, tidy, the same cut etc, the fact it is light or heavy or what ever really has no value here surely?
  14. Not sure that I can offer to much to this conversation. As Kyokushin student the arms of our GIs are short, about half way down the forearm! Then many of us cut a little more off to take the sleeve just above the elbow! Our GIs is designed to give as much freedom as is required/possible. (Sosai Oyama worked with Isami to create our Gis) The only rule I am aware of id the sleeves cannot be rolled up, risk of catching body parts in the folds I guess. The short sleeves is to me a good thing, I feel much more relaxed/free'er in my movement when I fight as a result!
  15. yup, I said DIY (Do it yourself) training gear! Most Karateka in 'ye good old days' would train using bowls of heated sand (or gravel) and punch wooden posts or trees to enhance there technique and skills. This is still true today...but some choose to buy the equipment from the store and ... Well a wooden fence post is £5-10 ($10-15 US), a Makiwara block/board will cost you £20-30 ($26-35 US) So DIY equipment .....! DIY Makiwara board. 1. Buy a fence post, say a 4ft post (total length 6ft). 2. Dig a 2ft hole in the garden. (seek permission from mum or the wife! , trust me on this one your be happy you did LOL) 3. Put post in the hole! 4. Concrete or use old house bricks to pack around the post. 5. Wrap some rope around the top of the post. 6. Start punching! Wooden dummy (Wing chung practice dummy) can cost as much £300 or more! DIY Wooden dummy (Wing chung practice dummy) Two options. Option 1 1. buy an old railway sleeper. (£20-30) 2. Dig hole in garden. 3. concrete the sleeper into place (Bricks will not do this time) 4. Wrap rope and old blankets around it. (wool blankets , this is the padding more is better!) 5. Cover this with nn old pillow case or such like. 6. Start etc Option 2 1. buy four fence posts, tie them together, creating a 'body'. (£20-30) 2. Dig hole in garden. 3. concrete the 'body' into place (Bricks will not do this time) 4. Wrap rope and old blankets around it. (wool blankets , this is the padding more is better!) 5. Cover this with an old pillow case or such like. 6. you get the idea! You can fit (bits of 2x2 or 3x3) arms etc to the 'body/sleeper' as you see fit. Anyone else have suggestions?
  16. hmm.... A belt that reaches to mid thigh is, to my mind the correct length. A little calculation to help anyone is: x 3.3 = eg: 86 cm waist (34 inch) x 3.3 = 283 cm (A 280 belt!)
  17. A test created by Sosai Oyama to allow students to 'test' them selves. A test inspired by a samurai warrior who fought other samurai warriors to test his skill using the wooden sword. Soasi is reported to have conceived a 300 man test originally before finalizing a 100 man grading criteria to 5th Dan and so the rank of Shihan. Now it's a test anyone can ask to take at shodan and above; A test many consider, some try and only a few complete! Kyokushin is famous for the fact that we fight 'full contact' karate (knockdown) with bare knuckle (no gloves/pads), this test is also performed 'bare knuckle'. Do you in your system have tests unique to you you can share or talk about?
  18. What he said without any doubt in my mind at all! I'll add, if that is OK with everyone, to stretch after you climb out of a bath! 'you' your muscles are warn very relaxed, making the stretch easier and you that much more supple! Also, when you stretch...breath! seriously just breath! reach to your leg, as you do breath in, then as you reach your 'limit, breath out....relax.....you just added a half an inch to the stretch! p.s. Don't stretch 'till it hurts...its hurting for a reason so stop! build up to that level, a damaged ligament takes an age to heal and hurts for the duration! Let it heal keep all work to a lower (much lower if need be) level until it heals.
  19. Me no not ever at all period. Prisoners..... have rights as well.... "Me no not ever at all period." Show respect to everyone is a primary rule (almost law) with me. I can honestly say that it is this rule that has not had me in a position (of my own making) where I've had or felt the need to take a more direct approach with the other person......regardless of there sex! In any dojo I have attended, my opponent is treated as an equal. This is the respectful and correct thing to do as far as I'm concerned. Another rule in my life...fight the man (person) not the grade (belt) I feel a desperate need to lighten the mood a little of my post. Mr.Miyagi (Karate Kid II) 'First learn rule number one, Rule number 2, says learn rule number 1.'
  20. Kyokushin, Judo & Ju-Jitsu Yes is the short answer. 3 times in defense of me. Oddly all where walking home after training, the Dojo was next to a bar so some might say it was to be expected! No serious injury to anyone, all left sitting against a wall .... 1 time in defense of a young lady! ... the wife of the guy I was ...um...talking to! It constitutes the only time where the other party was given a warning and at that point I allowed myself to move onto one single intention! All other occasions including the 3 times I had to take more direct action were all entered into with the desire to talk down the other person, to deescalate the situation. In all cases no pride was taken, no happiness was ever taken in the outcome or activity. I only ever felt relief it was over, no more than that!
  21. 17/7 Kihon core and push ups - 90 (3x30) + (3x30) 22/7 Legs conditioning work (thigh kicks, chudan (ribs) kicks) kata 24/7 core - 180 sit up (6x30) arms - 90 push ups (40 + 50) 'Round robin' Knockdown - 1 hr kata .... execution with eyes closed! (this was interesting..)
  22. hmm... An open contest, anyone can enter... 37th BRITISH OPEN KNOCKDOWN TOURNAMENT INCORPORATING THE 5th CUP OF EUROPE “Discovering The Nature Of One's True Character When Tried” Saturday 16th November 2013 More info: https://en-gb.facebook.com/BritishKyokushinkaiKarate Osu!
  23. To return to topic, I came across an old film of Kyokushin teaching/using throws in competition, back in the good old days...'70s as far as I can tell! Anyway I recalled this thread so here you go, Enjoy!
