  1. I plan the fight based on what I see before me. The idea of doing a, b and then c...no just no. The person before you will do what they want to get the advantage, to do that they will have spotted a tell or set range of actions you perform. They will be working on getting that same tell (that smae action) out of you, they will be working to get you to be a robot thing ..... to repeat. They have you at this stage its simply a matter of time before they cash in !! Any fighter needs to see that thing in the other guy once they see he has a tell that thing where balance is poor, the guard is down etc and then they simply get them to repeat and POW! Hence a planned set of actions going into a fight...no just no. See something react to something. If they are happy to sit and wait for you, cool, push them a little watch there reaction to that push, do they go left and back, or do they tense up and pull an arm back to strike...see something then react to something! Once you see a thing (whatever it is) keep it in mind and do something else, do you get the same reaction or something new? The trick is not to show you see the tell at all, but rather you are looking for a way into them! What you do now is plan an attack to take advantage of that tell! Plan based on what you see! See it Take it! Do they charge at you at every opportunity? Cool, side step one time, what do they do? Go back never!! They expect that that's why they charge at you they already have a plan for that. Don't be that guy! Move around them...jump at them...do something else..anything! When the person charges they have no real plan to deal with anything other than someone that retreats! Don't be that person be someone else! Get a reaction see there reaction and deal with that! take control, Take the center! See it take!
  2. Agree with that! A confident posture is as effective as looking like 'Hulk' carrying a loaded shotgun. The attacker is looking for anything that gives them an apparent advantage, a low slung head can suggest tired as much as it suggests a lack of confidence, and so making you a potential target! Likewise to walk around looking like Mr. Bean chewing a bee, is pretty much shouting "come on then lets ave it!" when there is no real ability, this guy is gonna get some new friends real quick ..... because they thought it would be fun! Confidence is massively important, but more than that confidence to carry it off. Watch people as they walk around in a pub(bar) chest out, tight vest top, trainers, shaved head maybe, but more so the fact there arms are held a foot away from the rib cage...not because the muscle pushed the arm out..there is no muscle there at all...them guys! (Don't actually do this) Stare at him, now how long before he wanders over and asks you polity to step outside.......? What about the guy in the same pub(bar) who looks a little quiet has a slight/small build, head down......if either of these two come close to each other who stands slightly taller and steps into the others space who shrinks away ever so much and lets his space get invaded!? Same bar, look around, the guy that never holds a stare at all, just seems to look up at none specific times or objects, stands 'normal', happy, head up, arms relaxed at his side, maybe holding a drink, small smile maybe, when he speaks he's clearly and has upbeat tone in his voice, now look at the vest top guy if anything stays away! If he does come close he never looks directly at this guy never steps into this guys space either....confidence!
  3. hmmmm... A post and pulley arrangement that helps develop punch power. A post 4/5ft tall with a pulley or some such arrangement on it, held in the ground with bricks. The rope connects your fist at one end and to a tire at the other end. The idea is, as you stand in a fighting stance the rope being turned through 90 degrees to allow force to be transmitted at the same right angle as you extend your fist forward so lifting the tire by that action! I was thinking of an upper cut .. http://www.karatetest.com/kyokushinkai/8thkyu/seiken-shita-uchi-57.htm [taken from karatetest.com] As the arm comes forward the rope like the arm is parallel to the floor, turns through 90 degrees then travels up to the post to the pulley and back down the other side to the tire so lifting the tire in that action. The point is to keep the arm parallel to the floor and maybe over time increase the weight! Its important to maintain the fist and arm position parallel and so develop the right muscle group. A part two to this would be... Like normal punch machines, you punch forward and lift a weight (tire) in that action. (Rope over the shoulder to the pulley and so lift the tire etc)
  4. 30/10 30 shadow sparring 20 min bag work 45 endurance/stamina 1/11 Missed Session - Injury picked up 28/10 4/1/2013 - (all wrapped up) 100 x sit ups 100 x push ups 100 x squats 100 x leg lifts - across 4 hr session 20 min knockdown bouts.
  5. If you can search for Kyokushins 'Sanchin kata with ibuki....thats fun...its breathing as well like DWx offeres. 'That' kata has created a stir or two in other associations 'open' competition and scored low as it appears to be short small and ...noisy!
  6. Kyokushin. It was the fist 'fighting' art that I trained in and has always been the art I return to. No matter who or what ryu I visit or has visited the dojo, its Kyokushin always has been! For me when I'm in the dojo its ..natural..its normal...its the way it should be! Its like coming home after a hard day or something..... to then do more work and the rush I feel as I train a euphoric feeling (an endorphin induced feeling I'm sure) then at the end meditating thinking back over what was achieved in the session.
  7. Thanks Dwx nice post great videos. The one that stands out for more me, in my absolute ignorance is the fist link you offer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Z6bhDHDDA Keeping ignorance in the for front of my mind, to use that first kata performance as the example. I mentioned earlier to have one student go of like rocket at a grading where the other students go of slower , that is a perfect visual display' of what I mean . For the kata and the guys performing them, I'm not taking anything form them, the art or the performance. I'm not TKD so I cannot judge, and do not judge but I can see as you indicate differences, I've no knowledge etc of the art, but I do see speed, commitment, focus confidence and the tempo.!! (as well as a little mind trick, not planned not wanted totally 100% unintentional but it happened none the less!) The two start the kata, there is a clear difference at the start, and from here they both move into the same kata but they do so out of sync with each other. Yet they both (upto a point ) keep the same speed, one is always one move behind the other, even when they are not able to see each other.....that is maintained that is until the mind trick occurs then the are almost in sync, a fraction off, one is now faster than the other by a split second out then as time moves a whole step ahead, but again tempo keeps them separate until the kata ends. This is the sort of thing I mean, the kata is the source of the tempo I feel all kata has and 'if' the kata is taught equally and correctly is what should be seen and what should be done no matter who you are, tall short, big small. I understand the ryu conundrum, the master influence, even country affect of any kata no matter who or what, but the kata is the kata, and will be performed over a time period that is going to be all but perfectly predictable.
  8. No no not a correction, not my meaning here were good! They are a Shotokan thing as far as I am aware (maybe a language/dialect thing more than that) but you need to remember Kyokushin was developed form Shotokan. For example we do have a 'Gekisai dai' and 'Gekisai sho' form (kata) in our syllabus, but we don't have a Kanku sho, just Kanku dai. One of things that makes Kyokushin....kyokushin!
  9. Yes, I'd agree with that! sensei8 started a thread along these lines not so long back.. http://karateforums.com/who-choose-whom-vt45622.html For me it was 'Enter The dragon' as I mention in the thread, but today I'm not so convinced, hence my contention here. Sure I fit your description, and as you say with a few exception this can be said to be true for everyone else, but films imo are not the massive influence they once were. There has to be a reason for that, and well whilst time is major player in this, if anyone wants something enough they will do all they can to make it happen. So to me it seems there is another 'something' that is involved in the desire to do or not do 'a thing', MA in this discussion. So to me the time reason/excuse takes a back seat here which to me leaves MA image! That image comes from the way MA has been presented to the audience, and in today's world that means TV and cinema.
  10. That would/is be a true and correct point! Kids then as now have time to kill …...so why not do Fung Fu or karate! (MA blah blah) Adults .... not so much! They are more serious and more professional (for the most part) on how they view and see things, so the telling of a story, be this book, magazine or the easiest media source, films any hint or weak story tends to be supporting or driving a ‘super power’ and things go downhill from there. Let’s not forget that parents are not happy about putting their child in harm’s way…it is after all ‘fighting’, so it goes against all parenting wants and even society standards today! That on top of a less than favourably view or memory (TV/Films) view of MA that the adult tends to have in mind. My son this weekend mentioned that two of his friends are dropping out of MA to play football (soccer). He has as a result suggested/indicated he might want to do the same instead now. Here ‘Peer pressure’ is playing a role in his mind driving this and that’s fine, he’ll be supported no matter what he finally chooses. How many other children are pushed or guided to the other thing away from MA along these kind of lines. If an adult was considering this kind of choice, well the image MA has is already in the back of their head, and then it occurs to me that when they walk into a dojo and see a mixed class, if they see adults at all, the choice has pretty much already been made for them, they just haven’t said the words yet! Kids are the future, and to win that mind, that heart you have to win the adult over first! that is going to be hard to do with teh sheer volume, even might of Hollywood to deal with.
  11. Sorry I know not the right thread, but had to say I do like Tsuki-no. Great kata. 26/10 Isometrics - arms 30mins. kata pinan - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - x2 28/10 2 hr stamina work. 1hr punch combinations finished session on Knockdown bouts.
  12. No no were good no offence was taken! I wasn't sure who you referred to so I thought I'd add a little validity to the 'stark' view that my comment suggests when presented on its own!
  13. Good, kind words... thank you! To be honest I'm looking forward to seeing/reading more form you as things move and grow here! Keep posting sir keep posting!
  14. Your right! Please don't take this comment on it's own! That comment coming from me does so with a bunch other bits and bobs that make up a fuller mind set. Sure if you must go that far, as I say do so, I then add take no pride. I've said before fight the man not the grade I also said you don't have to go that way in the first place. As I have said consider how other's will view you when the dust settles.
  15. Hmmmmmmm! Maybe. Maybe! Maybe karateforums and Patrick could run with it give it try see how things fly as it were.
  16. Yes they do. Sosai Oyama actually made very clear changes to 'our' kata, his logic was simple if it didn't benefit or support his teachings it was dropped or 'made better/changed. Hence in our system we have a Kanku dai kata but no Kanku sho...It was dropped as it was said to have no use or value to Kyokushin!
  17. hehe... as I posted in another thread an idea came to me.... Inner thigh worker! One pulley, some rope or such like, a weight (5-10 kg or an old tyre). 1. Fit pulley to a beam or post. 2. attach rope to weight and pass it through the pulley. 3. lie down on your side and attached the free end to your knee. get the 'distance' right, and have the weight behind you. Pull your thigh down to the floor, as in past you other knee. repeat for a while and swop. (In time maybe keep going until fail!) I think to do these you would need to work on at least two angles to work more muscle and/or groups. Work one set with your thigh at 90 degrees to the rest of you, and another at 45 degrees to you. A third option could be to lie in line with the rope and pull that way. .....beware the rope could slip...
  18. It s an old thread but...inner thigh is an attack area because its hard to build up and so makes 'knocking' the other guy down really easy! conditioning is much of what I/we do in Kyokushin. have someone kick your inner thigh..not hard...grief no. Have them kick softly and build after a few kicks you find a level a weight of kick that is just about ok. Stay at that level for a while. Also, consider leg lifts with a ball held between your ankles.....p.s. want to work faster make the ball a medicine ball! Not seen them in ages, maybe they flopped in sales or moved on to some other design, but see if you can find it or what it became; get a 'bull' worker/bar. Like the ones you get for your arms but this one was strapped to your knees! enjoy!
  19. Yes, spot on! Its amazing how the aggressor suddenly becomes a model citizen when they are getting beat! Take no pride in your action, have no grey area to explain! 'When' they submit..that's it it's over, no need to go on. That's a grey area you don't want or need, that's the area LAW will take over and you will suddenly find you are the bad guy in this situation...... In competition 'Yami' (means stop) make sure you do, no need to push onwards, 'Chui' and potentially 'shikkaku' are what you will receive.....as the saying goes...stop means stop.
  20. ....'politics'.....one of the other reasons I stopped training all them years ago! Work was teh main reason it had to win...I had to eat and pay the bills, but politics were really starting to grind me down!
  21. Thats fine I for all my ignorance was kind'a thinking along that train of thought. I do Kyokushin, as taught by Hanshi Arneil, which differs some from the Kyokushin that Sosai taught in the latter years of his life, that differs from the teaching of Shikyokushin.... ...but were all kyokushinkai karate students, ultimately were all students of Sosai Oyama. Hanshi himself said the last time I saw him (no not personal meeting, a tournament I was at as he spoke to us all) that he had worked on keeping the Kyokushin we were taught as close to the original teaching of Sosai out of respect for him. So I guess the question is when you said 'sine wave' would that be (in my ignorance) like the difference in teaching styles of this master compared to that master? (Hence the different organizations.)
  22. yes, its a good film good fun good action...as to story line ...well.... when you watch it, do feel free to disable some of the higher brain functions! .....but....there is a scene (three if I remember correctly) that will resonate with this thread and the comments around 'guns' that were made earlier! My hint to you is the 'Gun kata'........
  23. As long as the movement is changing the situation, it is useful. Vibrating in place doesn't change the situation much.Yup good call! Your right! Thank you for he correction!
  24. Thanks! I'm of the opinion that no one should ever get into such a situation, 'if' it becomes the only option left then commit..period. One of you is going to be hurt, so make sure to fully commit because once that roller-coaster ride starts you can't get off until the end, the other person already wants to ride to the end, they started the situation, they committed! Make sure you have a clear mind to that end. You didn't want it, its not your fault, so end it! If you are going to do that ensure there is no pride in the action. Hurting the other person for the sake of hurting them...when was that ever fun? When was that ever civilized? when was that ever right? End it move on, have no grey areas to explain.
  25. Hmm! Ok good thanks all, very helpful, I'm greatful for your answers, thank you. Can I push the other question? For me, there is a list not long and not short, but a list just the same and number 1 on that list is when the comment makes a direct a clear personal statement toward the other party. That's number 1 to me, to me there is absolutely no reason at all for such comments they are attacks.
