Back kick and side kick end in the same position. Only the delivery is different therefore they look essentially the same.

I sure hope you don't let one experience with dizziness keep you from training during your menses! It could be just a coincidence or you may need to increase your fluids as you will naturally diurese (lose water) the first few days of your period.

I agree exactly! You can't make someone else accountable nor can you impose your personal standard on another. You can however, set a example for others to follow-if they choose. As a school owner, I promote students not only on what they have learned physically but on what they had learned mentally and spiritually too..and at any given time in their development one of those elements may express itself more than another-hence it may appear to those on the "outside" that the belt is not deserved based on what they "see". It is about the finished product-the "fruit on the tree" so to speak.

Food for thought: If we all go off in our own directions and leave our teachers principles and practice behind, who is left to carry on the style and tradition as it was passed down to us? While it is true that you "make your martial arts your own"- as individuals that is inevitable as we physically and mentally adapt based on body style, physical limitations, environment, etc.-"your martial arts" are a culmination of all that you have been taught and you will inevitably teach the same principles, ideas, theories, to your students-hopefully in the same way it was taught to you so that your students can "discover" their "own art" too.

Sometimes the teacher knows you're ready before you do...Oh, I'm sorry, do I sound like a broken record?

The Best Things in Life are Free
ninjanurse replied to stoneheart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My sentiments and experience exactly, although I might add that loyalty, friendship, and committment are the key to value-both giving it and receiving it...regardless of how much you pay. "The definition of a mature mind is to give without remembering and to receive without forgetting." p.s. thread moved to General MA so all can enjoy! Thanks Laurie -
Personally, I think it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the kick. Variations in the degree of pivot, height of chamber, and path of travel are all variables that alter speed, power, and direction of impact through the target. I teach my beginners to pivot 180, chamber high, and kick straight out like a piston in an engine. This develops muscle and tendon strength, flexability, good foot shape, balance, and power. It also gives us the body mechanics to work on variations later. The pivot should be taught to be timed with the kick so that the body weight is not fully on the supporting leg thus avoiding twisting the knee.

dojang related t-shirts?
ninjanurse replied to younwhadoug's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I plan on a summer t-shirt sale for my school. Pre-sale is the only way to go for me as I have few students right now and can't afford to over-extend. It only takes about 5-7 days to get them so it is not a big inconvenience. Unfortunately our Master instructor does not allow incomplete uniforms on the schools so the shirts would be for general wear onl...but it is good advertising! At my old school each class of Black Belt Canidates had their own theme and t-shirt. I have several very cool ones and they each bring back great memories. I plan on doing the same for my Black Belt Canidates. -
Congratulations! Keep us posted.

Again, Sohan is right! You need to cross-train because biking works certain muscle groups (or parts of muscle groups), running works others, etc. Intervals are by far the fastest way do build endurance-but watch the heartrate! My interval workout is as follows: 50% x 2 min (1st set only) 60% x 1 min 70% x 1 min 80% x 1 min 90% x 1 min 60% x 1 min 70% x 1 min 80% x 1 min 90% x 1 min repeat 2 more times, then 50% for 1 min. I find this keeps my heartrate in better check(for aerobic conditioning) than working at a higher rate for a longer interval.

Sohans right (of course!). You can do low-carb for quick fat loss but in the long run not good for serious athletes. I find that a 50/50 protein-carb intake works best for me but I think you have to play with it a bit to find the best balance for your metabolism and goals.

registereing name of school, and tax info..
ninjanurse replied to JimmyNewton's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Hi and congratulations! I recently opened in a similar situation and this is what I needed: Business license/DBA ("doing busines as"-apply at County Building) Tax ID #'s(can apply online through your State site) Insurance (bought mine online from FL Dean-very reasonable) The State sends you a quarterly tax packet that you must send in by the deadline-even if you do not have any tax to pay. Good luck on you venture! -
People eat meat because it is full of important nutrients. I don't understand the question. People eat vegetables because they are full of important nutrients. The question was rhetorical in nature...how people chose to get their nutirition doesn't really matter as long as they are taking in well balanced calories that correspond to their fitness level and goals. You don't have to eat meat to be healthy, run marathons, or be an olympic athlete. fosforlu has the right idea. There are many reasons why people choose their diet-vegetarian or not. I chose not to eat animals for health reasons and for ethical reasons.

KarateForums.com: Five Years Online
ninjanurse replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Truly an amazing accomplishment for you Patrick! We live in a society where it is often hard to find a peaceful place to visit and converse with friends-especially on the internet! Thank you for all your hard work in keeping KF that peaceful place! -
Why does one eat meat or animal products? There are many reasons why people choose a vegetarian/vegan diet. The health benefits are tremendous provided you do it right. It is great to feel good everyday-no highfat hangovers or sugar crashes!
-
In addition, there are alot of B12 fortified foods out there so you can comsume enough to avoid shots or pills. Same with calcium. Aodhan is correct-beans are a staple for us veggie heads but I prefer tofu, soy and wheat gluten products over them. Unless of course it's chili or hummus!!!
-
Being a vegetarian or vegan is not in anyway harmful to your health or training. A balanced diet is the key whether you eat meat or not. I have been vegan now for 6 years (vegetarian before that) and am in the best shape and health I have ever been.
