  1. Ideally, you should land on your heel and then quickly shift forward so the ankle is in a position to push-automatically springing you forward, i.e, heel to toe.
  2. According to a leading authority on running, stretching before a run actually increases the chances of injury (this is supported by research) as pushing a cold muscle, tendon, or joint puts it at risk. You should also not stretch right after running as the muscles are all "revved" up and ready to go for about 30 minutes after and stretching can cause them to spasm-a "stretch reflex"-which can tear musle fibers. The best time to stretch is after a good warmup-any light activity can accomplish this. Galloways Book on Running, 2nd Edition
  3. Congratulations to Patrick and all our Users! Keep it coming!!
  4. Moving this to introductions...see you there!
  5. Going to move this over to Testing And Grading. See ya there!
  6. I'm with Laurie ! I prefer the traditional uniform. It is "suggested" that I wear black pants as a certified instructor in my system but I choose not too, however, I do wear a black kung fu top with white pants on occasion. At my former school the uniforms changed with each dan, and I'll have to admit it was kinda cool....but I don't miss it.
  7. My 2 cents: Respect and discipline are very important in the classroom but....not all students are prepared mentally when they first walk in your dojang. They have no idea what a great gift to themselves a Black Belt can be and many quit before they start to realize it. I feel that it is my obligation as an instructor to help ALL students come to this realization and because I enjoy martial arts I take the approach that they should enjoy it too. I am from a very OLD SKOOL and I demand quality from my students and my apporach is similar to my first sensei's: We are a martial arts family. Respect is taught through respect. Discipline is learned by example. Those that need reminders will be reminded. Obediance is expected and those that disobey will be reprimanded and/or punished. And yes, families that play together stay together.
  8. I purchase my boards online. They cut them to whatever size you want and they are fairly inexpensive. Saves the time, hassle, and 70 mile round trip!
  9. Just remember that all techniques have a beginning and end. Practice the two kicks with that in mind and you will improve your balance-and eventually speed.
  10. I was referring to the two people in the picture...not the photographer! (I tell him though!)
  11. Great picture of you and Master Kuek!!!!!!!! It won't be long bud...
  12. Sounds like they are not ready anyway so don't let it bother you.
  13. Koryo is traditionally a Black Belt form. It is universal throughout TKD.
  14. I wouldn't use the word mundane but I agree with you in principle on that point. Martial arts were simply the way you lived and trained everyday...nothing special or magical. The discipline you obtained through training was integral to your success as a warrior and in todays thinking that translates into developing "good character"-as obviously we don't go around hacking people with swords, or fighting the our farms, etc.. Hence, we emphasize the budo aspects of our training. Many martial artists today try to separate the two but you can't escape it totally (discipline in the ring dose translate to discipline in other areas-inmost cases)...and in any competition, even to the death, the more disciplined and passionate fighter does have the advantage-whether he is of good character or not.
  15. The right hand is the sun, the left the moon. It's a yin-yang kind of thing I believe.
