Whats up with JJ
TJS replied to craknek's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
no, the only way to beat grappling is by knowing it. several stlyes teach "takedown defenses" and reversals etc, but that dosent mean they work against a good grappler. if you dont know BJJ/wrestling then you will get taken down and submitted. -
That depends on the style of karate. The kenpo i take does teach take down defense and jj. yes they teach you jj, thats not karate
-
I dont think BJJ is complete by itself, but i agre with you for the most part..striking is definetly neccesary, but to beat grappling you have to know grappling, simple as that.
-
yes, but point sparring/slap fighting dosent count. ok' i'll ask you a THIRD TIME, DO YOU SPAR WITH LEG KICKS? LEGBLOCKS?
-
mma/vale tudo fighter are the best fighters in the world. perriod end of story
-
as far as the original post, karate "can" be a good self defense stytem the problem is today you will proabably find a school that dosent do a good job. unless it's a full contact style like Kyokoshin i belive there are better ways to learn street self defense, if thats what you looking for Krav Maga would get the job done.
-
and karate is? no. i'll ask again, does karate spar with leg kicks?
-
BJK-why on earth would you think it takes more boxing than it does karate to defend yourself? Boxing is one dimensional and is not compete, but I will say this about it 1. hands are one of the most important things in a fight and NO ONE has better hands than boxing 2. boxers have something most People dont, they have the ability to take a hit and keep going..boxing taches you how to do this and i belive it's huge weakness in many schools. does Karate spar with leg kicks? do you use shin blocks/aka leg defenses? I know some stlyes do but i was under the impression most do not. Boxing combined with Kyokoshin karate or Muay thai is brutally effective boxing/wrestling or boxing/BJJ is also a scary combination..look at vitor belfort.

pangnoon-find out for yourself, I would be willing to bet a competent BJJ blue/purple belt would show you a few things karate does not teach you how to defend a double leg or single leg or most takedowns from the clinch it's like you living 10 years ago when everyone belived you can just punch someone once before they tackle you and end it. If someone really want's to get you to the ground it's proabably going to end up there, gravity and balnce are working against you.

as soon as the permit to carry law went into effect here in Austin, Texas the first incident was from a thug who got out of his car and started punching someone who cut him off...he got shot dead on the spot..i guess that would be the last time he picked on someone. i keep a nice oc spray container next to me, just let them get upt o the window and boom

A great form of Grappling...
TJS replied to craknek's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
um, Greco-Roman wrestling is awsome it's throws and takedowns are pretty mean but it lacks submissions, wresltler+submission skills=a very dangerous fighter many of todays top fighters are good wrestler with the skill to avoid submission. without BJJ though look at severn vs gracie. despite ther huge size diffrence royce was able to catch him in a triangle choke. -
yes

heres a potential situation ,
TJS replied to jiu-jitsu fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
you did the right thing, btw here in the US were allowed to carry things to defend ourselves..including firearms in some states.. BJJ despite it's many advantages is not good against multiple attacker, you shoudl work on your standup though for the future. -
Can anyone help me????
TJS replied to wrestlingkaratechamp's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
read my reply in your first post... -
shoot for a double leg, slam him on his back, take the mount and reign down blows untill it's over thats assuming all his friends arent around.. if you are a good wrestler and he is not then you should dominate him like that. if you dont want to go to the ground then try to hit first, hit hard and end it.. untrained fighters will drop their hands when you kick low...throw a kick at his nuts or a round kick at his thigh/knee, even if you dont land it follow up by a hard right to the nose, from then he should be fair game.

Kicks vs kicks good info...
TJS replied to TJS's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
yes. -
alot of people were talking about the diffrence in the kicks of Muay thai vs Karate vs TKD etc here is a good website that shows the diffrences in the round kicks, it's about half way down the page, but there is alot of good info in the site and I would encourage reading it if you have the time. It compares the round kick of Full contact Karate (Kyokoshin) vs Traditional Karate(Shotokan, etc) vs Tae Kwon Do vs Muay Thai\ http://www.kyokushinmail.com/koya/KickInstruction.htm

paignoon - unless you base you ability to fight on biting and eye gouging then that statment holds no truth for UFC 1-5, grapplers can do that to and are usally in a better position to do so. right, somehow a 170 brazilian named royce managed to do it to guys who hit alot harder than you. very rarely can a pure striker knockout a good grapler before they get submitted, there is no reason to belive it would be any diffrent on a lower level. if you know what you doing then you wont get hit much or at all when closing the distance. they didint in the first ones and they still dont in vale tudo, does it make a diffrence, no. im not even a "grappler" and do alot more striking but these arguments really hold no weight.

Pragmatism of chi sau?
TJS replied to Fnord's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I was not disrespecting Any MA I stated the fact that Muay Thai Has always beaten WC in challenge matches dating back to the 70's. Muay thai has also been the training meathod of just about every top fighter in todays scene. take that however you want.
