  1. I'm in my last year of school, I do 7 subjects, standard english, business studies, information processes & technology, advanced mathematics, extension mathematics, physics, software design & development. I like Math, Physics and Software Design & Development. I can't believe you people who don't like math! =p
  2. Dude, what are you on ? A gun can't block so it's an inferior weapon ?! How convenient you didn't add it can injure to the list. May I ask why you are so bent on defending without hurting an opponent ? So, you're going to carry an impractical weapon such as a sword around concealed in your trench coat just because IT CAN BLOCK, which a gun can't do. If you're in a situation where you're blocking, it's already escalated too far, and the only effective means of self defense would be disabling the attacker in some way. Why would people even practice with a gun if they're just going to pull it out and shoot blindly at the torso ? Police officers when they shoot, don't end up shooting people in the head, or the heart. Most of the time, they injure them, that's providing the situation escalates where they have no choice but to shoot them. Sadly, there are are cases where people get killed accidently. But, in comparison, the number is probably no greater than the number of people who kill someone accidently with bare hands. You seem to contradict yourself... A gun was designed to kill.. What were the martial arts made for ? In esscence, to kill. You don't think a sword was made to kill ? If that's so, is a sword sharp then ? Why does it have the potential to kill ? Martial arts and weapons of any kinds were designed to kill. Are you saying they're not feared, especially martial arts ? _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. 3. I've studied a little akido, akido can be quite nasty! For example, what about when an attacker grabs you from behind, you grab their hand, turning their palm up towards the ceiling, bringing their hand down over your shoulder and towards your chest. I don't know what it's called, but it's damn nasty! I'm sure you could cause some serious damage to your attacker if you wanted to. Jiu jitsu is the same, what harm is their in choking someone out ? It's much better than exchanging blows. They might feel uncomfortable as they get choked out, but once they wake up, they'll be fine. You can easily control an opponent without harming them, how bad you hurt your opponent is up to you and quite frankly, I will not hesitate in hurting someone if they have the potential to do damage to me.
  4. Could you defend yourself on the street right now ? Sorry, man, I don't have 11 years to dedicate to learning effective self-defense. Give me BJJ which I can get a good understanding of in 6 months, combined with some solid kicks and punches from kickboxing and I feel fairly confident. After 10 years of BJJ, you'll have no trouble with a street thug. In fact, I'd say after a year, most grapplers should be able to submit a street thug with relative ease.
  5. I've noticed the last two times where I've gone hard in sparring I've ended throwing up. I'm training in the morning which I normally don't do, first time I chucked up my breakfest, so that's fair enough I suppose. Today I didn't eat anything, I only drank water before I went. I ended bringing up juice that I drank last night at around 12am. I thought the 9 and a half hours inbetween would be more than enough time for my body to get rid of it. Am I throwing up 'cause my anaerobic endurance is low ? Generally when someone gets a knee on stomach is when I start feeling pretty sick.. Anyone have any ideas ?
  6. If you release the choke as soon as he passes out there shouldn't be any damage, but if you hold it on for a min or two, you can cause brain damage. I think if you choke someone out, you're meant to put them on their side..I'm not sure, I figure if I'm gonna choke someone else, it's 'cause they were trying to hurt me or someone else, so I shouldn't really care about damage to them.
  7. The more fights I see, the more confident I am grappling is the stuff to learn if you wanna finish a fight quickly without too much effort.
  8. I have to say today's felt intense.. 5 min warm up of just take downs, I was fine with that. Then we started rolling, I did one 5min round where I went HARD.. I started feeling pretty sick in the middle of it and by the time I finished and got outside I was ready to spew & I did. I sat around for 15min, then I rolled again, I thought I would be fine since I just spewed, so I went HARD again, by the time I was finished I was ready to spew again and I did! I felt terrible at this point, physically and mentally. Physically I was shaking and I layed down with my eyes closed, mentally I felt awful too. My head & body felt really hot and it's relatively cold at the moment (I didn't even wanna get out of bed it was so cold), I had to take my gi and socks off to cool down. It felt really bad, 'cause mentally I felt regret for going so hard and I've got these thoughts racing through my mind, maybe this isn't for me, I'm gonna quit, I don't wanna do this anymore. Probably took me another 20min to recover this time, 'cause I didn't spew untilI drank some cordial which brought up fluids from what I thought was an empty stomach! I didn't have anything to eat before I went, because the preceeding week I chucked up my breakfest. After that, I rolled again and I was fine.. The training session wasn't intense, it just FELT intense, but it was also pretty rewarding 'cause I got a guard pass I've been working on down pact and I could see my wrestling come together.
  9. Heh, what you described as ju jutsu is basically BJJ. No holds barred matches have a lot of fighters who know BJJ! Personally I don't consider BJJ a sport, and even though it's meant to be a gentle art, I think it's a nasty art if you want it to be.. =p BJJ entails taking your attacker down to the ground if the fight doesn't already end up there (it's based on the philosophy all fights go to the ground or are won on the ground), controlling them, then finishing them off. Traditional Jiu Jitsu is more stand up & deals with locks while on your feet, there's barely any ground grappling if any from what I know. Sambo means self defense without weapons in english, there's two main kinds of sambo, sport sambo - submission grappling & combat sambo - for self defense. Proficient ? Depends on how often you can get mat time, the more mat time you get, the better you get.
  10. -: , I don't think he's serious.. There's no way you can write something in that tone and expect people to take what you say seriously. I think his point is some people place too much empahsis on kata, & kata alone will not make you a good fighter. karatekid1975, I got it from http://www.mcdojo.com El Guerrero Loco, same =) I want to be able to fight & that's what I train for.
  11. However, I still wanna rebut all your posts, maybe tommorrow. I've promised myself at least 6 hours of math a day leading up to my exams.
  12. Guess everyone has seen this thread now & there won't be anymore posts.. It's not serious, I thought the tone of the article would have told you that. It's from another site, I quoted it. Have to admit, I wanted to see how you kata enthusiasts would react to it, sorry, I had fun reading your posts =p
  13. Damn right! I ain't gonna hang around. Don't worry about the consequences, worry about them later. Don Gwinn, those of us who crosstrain aren't psycho, just wanna be ready to defend ourselves if it arises. I saw a fight last night, this guy was stopped at the lights, a guy went up to his car and yelled for him to get out while opening his door, the guy got out and started punching him, the attacker ended up on the ground with the victim on top of him. If he knew how to grapple, he would have had ample time to finish him off before it got broken up. I didn't break it up because I could see the attacker was getting everything he deserved. Security guards broke it up, the victim who was on top of the guy got to drive off. If that was me, as soon as the guy opened my door, he would have been cracked across the face with one of the sitcks I carry to choke up my wheel incase of a flat tyre.
  14. Nope, all we do is shake hands with people before & after working with them.
  15. You seem to forget it's guns ONLY, the participants aren't allowed to use hands & feet, so they adopt a completely different strategy to what they would if they could use hands & feet. Alos, most confrontations don't start from 50 metres away or whatever.
  16. I've adopted more of a grappler's stance now 'cause it's confusing to pure strikers, feet still shoulder width apart, left jaw tucked into left shoulder, elbows in, hands open ready to grab someone if I wanna grapple, otherwise my hands make a fist.
  17. 'They await their Sensei in Silence. The students sit straight backed, with their feet folder under them in the traditional way. Dressed in a worn and faded Gi, The Sensei makes his way to the front of the Dojo, and turns to face his Students. "Kata" he begins. "Kata are said to be thousands of years old. They are a complex pattern of defensive blocks and counters in which are found the deadliest movements, hidden throughout the centries. When you follow these ancient steps, you are walking in the footsteps of the Masters of old...." Now if there aint a sucker born every minute. Kata, Kuen, or Hyung. They are arguably, the most loveds and hated facets of the martial arts world. The student is to practice pre hearsed movents until perfection is attained. Thereby exposing the student to deeper level of mastery over his or her art. Some traditionalists claim it is the uktimate tool, on the road to Mastery. These people need to be evaluated. There is nothing you can gain by practicing Kata that you cannot gain 2 fold in practice of a different kind. Strengthand conditioning? Grapple. It works all of your body and is a realistic form of training. Its pracitioners are always in the very best of shape. Punches and Kicks? Thai pad drills. You will work EFFECTIVE striking on actual targets. This will build speed, focus and accuracy while providing a great workout as well. History and Culture? Read a book. Im sure the author is far more qualified to speak of history and tradition than a guy in a karate uniform shouting "Hai-yaa!". Ki? []] We'll talk about that next time. Its my opinion that the main advantage of Kata is that it allows a fat old guy who cant really perform his chosen art to teach as if he has a fountain of information. "Turn your chambered hand sliiiiighty to your left...THERE! Perfect.." This guy gets to correct miniscule details of an unworkable technique and his students look at him like hes God almighty. And lets talk about those 'Hidden Moves' that we all here so much about. If you practice the Forms long enough, all the secrets within are revealed. Look, this is the year 2002. You want to teach me a move? Show it to me. Dont have me run around like a good little boy on an Easter Egg hunt. The fact that people actually PAY someone alot of money to be shown this stuff really blows my mind. I guess the feel part of something. Like its their own little chance to play Mr. Miyagi and teach this pattern to those under them. Like the martial arts version of a Star Trek Convention. Before I end Id like to say that Kata can be a valuable tool for children and people who are older and cannot perform other excercises like they once did. Kata can give children focus, and discipline. It can teach them to throw techniques in a straight line, and develop strong legs. For older students it can be a way to excercise and still practice some of the movements of their art. For all other practitioners who are concerned with excersise or self defense, I would advise you to avoid Kata. It is an outdated practice of heavily flawed technique.'
  18. You guys are worried about a lawsuit ? Pfft! I find that really irritating. On the street I am not going to wait for someone to hit me or dance around in some defensive stance, if someone wants to hurt me, I'll do my best to destroy them as quickly as possible. I'm assuming that the attacker has the potential to do some harm, otherwise I'd laugh and walk away. Better to face the jury than be carried out in a coffin. If you're not going to fight back at all and adopt some defensive stance with open hands up around your head, why even train in MA ? If I'm gonna block, I'll block with elbows, not open hands. Seems like a waste of time to me. If I started a fight with someone on the street and they went into the defensive, I'd place a kick right through them & they'd be wishing they had tried to hurt me while they had the chance. If you're really that concerned about facing a lawsuit and don't want to slug it out with an opponent, I'd say take up grappling so you can choke your opponent out without any real harm.
  19. ROFL Commenting on your last paragragh, it is! It's a turn on, baby! *RAWR*
  20. Nooo! The earth revolves around the sun! =p
  21. If science has a theory that can explain it, then I'll believe it!
  22. XP is a resource hog, I refuse to touch it like 98, 2k is pretty sweet Ti-Kwon-Leap, how long since you've been on the linux scene ? Have you had a look at any screenshots lately ? Linux is getting closer and closer to being ready for the home user. There are some distros which are giving icons on the desktop similar names to Windows to try and emulate the look and feel of Windows.
  23. Technology is the future.. The atomic bomb can be used to cause destruction, okay. But, why is that ? It's man's greed that puts technology to 'evil' work. Let's take the atomic theory for example. How many people know what it is, or know it in great depth ? I, unfortunately don't know it in great detail yet as I haven't studied matematics advanced enough to do so. But, one theory out of the millions that exist is what allows you and I to communicate on the internet. Would you say technology is not good ? If man wants to do harm, he will always do it. In fact, your example only helps to prove my point. Why did man invent the atomic bomb ? Man invented the atomic bomb with technology because it is more efficient, more productive opposed to machine guns. Why would I want to get 1000 troops and hand them machine guns in the hope of wiping out a city when I can have one man drop an atomic bomb which will wipe out an entire city ? This is providing I want to wipe out a whole city for whatever reason that may be. By the same token, why would I want to waste time that I can use doing other things, allowing me to grow in other areas of life, not just one area and have a greater balance of development ?
  24. Yeah, I worked out 5 points for each answer, I still don't know how they came up with the 5, I think a number out of seven or a percentage would have been a better indication. Just seems illogical to me, oh well.. Eye of the Tiger, I'm a male and your sexism is highly provocative, not to mention rude and unneeded.
