  1. I really think it should be plural, styles.
  2. A thing called planning perhaps ? Can't just pull a team of people together and send them off to Mars tommorrow. They'll have to undergo training to increase fitness levels. They'll probably want to discuss this with their family before they hop in a space craft. Then there are things called Van Allen radiation belts which effect communication. They'll have to design and assemble a space craft suitable for the mission. The people onboard will need to eat, sleep & ****! I thought you knew the physics! _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy. 3. Why were you so sarcastic about launching within the next 20 years ? You should know 20 years is not a long time when you consider everything. I highly doubt there will be many volunteers who'd like to live on Mars. Oxygen ? We're going to have to walk around with masks ? I don't think many people will like that. At least 3 years to return if they don't like there ? In that time I'll have been to Uni and completed my degree. We can't just come back to Earth at any time we want, we may have to wait up to 20 years before we can return if we want to. When you do get there, what is there going to be for you ? Not much.. Life on another planet is possible if you ask me, the standard of living just won't be near as good as what we have here at the moment.
  4. ckdstudent, yeah, it's expensive, dude.. For longer flight periods, we require more fuel, which requires more fuel for the added mass, etc! When we fly to the moon, the engines are turned off, they use a gravity-assisted trajectory, the engines are only used to reach the escape velocity and land the craft.. A successful launch window to Mars occurs roughly once every 3 years. I ask you, would you leave your family for 3 years ? 20 years is a very small time actually, you know ? Presently, we communicate to spaceships at the speed of light, but the distance it has to travel is still significant.. It obeys an inverse square law. Also, there are other problems, due to sunspot activity which affects the Van Allen radiation belts which are 2 energetically doughnut shaped regions around the Earth. Sunspots are cool magnetic areas on the sun which are up to 400 times as strong as the Earth's magnetic field. This affects the Van Allen radiation belts, 'causing a corresponding ring of current to flow around the Earth which can **** up communication. They can go from a maxiumum to a minimum to a maximum in 11 years. XpOiSoN FrEeX, I think that's more the way the media portrayed it... If it's following a certain course, it'll hit the Earth and even if it does, it's more likely to land in water, since 75% of out Earth is made up of water. I dare say a gravitational attraction between other comets and what not will put it off course if it is on course. All objects are attracted : F=Gm1m2/r² F = Gm1m1/r² F is the force G is the Universal gravitational constant m1, m2 are the masses of the objects r is the distance between their centres Very unlikely it'll hit the Earth! _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. 5. How do you define humble ? Until recently, I've thought of humble as NOT taking any credit at all and believing you aren't good at all.. I just realised, I have no trouble listening to someone talk about their achievements, accomplishements, providing they don't think they're better than what they are, or imply some kind of superiority over you. I now believe you come across as arrogant when you think you're better than what you really are. Just last night, a mate of mine was telling me he was just starting to 'tune' this girl, when another mate stole her away. He's good looking, but he treats girls like dirt and has no respect which is why none of them go out with him. The girl he was 'tuning' later said he was too ratty for her. That's when my opinion of humble changed. He KNOWS he's good looking, but since he thinks that makes him God's gift to women and boasts about it every time you speak to him, he comes across as arrogant. He thinks because of one quality he has, it makes him a great person, at least that's the impression he gives to everyone else. The other mate, who 'stole' the girl is good looking too. It's obvious the ladies want him, in his mind I believe he knows that he's attractive. When he talks about girls, I have no trouble listening, because he doesn't do it in a boastful way, I'm sure it'd sound boastful if you didn't know him and he just started talking to you about it, but since I know how 'good' he really is, I have no trouble at all listening to the 'smooth' things he does to a girl he likes, or his stuff ups - he can swallow his pride unlike some. Thoughts ? I didn't use martial arts, because I wanted to talk about being humble in general...
  6. I don't think you can make a generalisation to say whether it's combative or not. Okay, maybe you can now I think about it.. With a lot of the sports, you have to work on technique and skill to hurt the opponent. In boxing, you work on hitting vital points and your timing so when you connect, it hurts! You don't just throw big swings and hit him on the arm, it's not going to hurt. You've been training like this, you get into a fight, you'll automatically start striking at vital points since this is how you've been training, effectively hurting him. Take grappling, a lot of people think the gi takes the reality aspect out of it. This couldn't be further from the truth really.. When working with the gi, you MUST learn technique to get out of holds, the gi makes it much easier to control an opponent, effectively making it harder to get out. The only way you'll get out is with technique. With no gi, it much easier to escape, but most people wear a shirt which can be effectively used to choke, control, them, whatever. In conclusion, I'm going to say if the sport builds up your skill and technique, it's combative. However, I don't consider point sparring a skill!
  7. Yeah, big wind up there from that guy in the picture. It's not likely to drop anyone though, even if it does connect. The big haymakers are almost always seen coming, so you can avoid them, or they miss by themselves anyway in most cases. In a real fight, basics rule.. In my fights, they have gone to the ground when I haven't wanted them to. I used to be a pure striker then, so I would get straight back onto my feet. I just wish I knew how to grapple a little then so I could have finished it quickly and easily. I believe you can take more than one attacker, depending on how well they can fight. But, then again I'm a crazy guy who thinks about starting a fight with 3 people at school, just so I can drop one, then go to the deputy and argue 'do you think I'm stupid enough to start a fight when there's one of me and three of them?'.. A mate of mine who's been grappling for 3 years and has only just recently started striking within the last few months handled 3 bouncers at a night club. Put the first one in a headlock, held the second one against the wall, placed a thigh kick on the third one when he came running over, hahaha.. Handling multiple attackers does happen, but I'd much rather avoid it
  8. Why's that ? I thought it would be the opposite. Sitting on the couch living a sedentary lifestyle isn't going to prolong my life opposed to training in MA.
  9. I might be late posting, don't check this section too often.. TKD might not be the right art for you, or it could be the school. I've quit kickboxing for the time being and I've been doing BJJ. At the time I quit due to the school.. but, when I reflect back on it, I was there for a year, it was a good school and I was happy. I've always been fascinated by BJJ and I was stoked when I came across a school in my area accidently, I looked before and couldn't find any. I'm still deciding if BJJ is better suited to me or not. It's kind of hard to make a decision when you're rolling with almost good purple belts, or high purple belts. Only atending TKD once a week, you might be able to do another art as well. I still miss my striking at times, it's been around 6 months since I've striked. If you're not after self defense, you could be after an internal style like akido that has a lot of philosophy, or perhaps karate ?
  10. Taikudo-ka, frustrating isn't it ? But, well worth it. When I started kickboxing, my instructor was picking up on the karate blocks I was doing during sparring. At the time I thought there was nothing wrong with them, better than being hit, right ? Seems so silly now, the leg is much better to block with than the arm, doesn't hurt, and doesn't leave my head waiting to get knocked off. First time I looked at this thread, I didn't think it was serious due to the name, but then I saw the large number of replies and here I am replying, heh. Sound like a load of to me, I'd like scientifical evidence to back it up before I'll even seriously think about it. There's a lot of other unknown variables in this, their diet, stress levels, emotional stress, diseases, illness, hereditary diseases, high blood pressure.. The list goes on. _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy. Edited for profanity. 11. Taikudo-ka, certainly counts for me. Even more so since I live here. =) I'd like to be around when these sort of things happen, I could make a citizen's arrest.
  12. Uhh, yeah... I like to open with a triple back flip, to stun my opponent and put them in awe. I then proceed to stand there, harnessing my chi whilst commanding them to attack me, when they attack, I laugh at their futile attempts to hurt me as their technique hurts them tenfold due to the power I generate with my chi. Never underesitmate the power of my chi!
  13. Hallo, ich bin, Bon, heh. I barely remember any German. By the way, your english is good!
  14. Regardless of the art someone studies, I'm sure a kick to the head that connects properly will knock anyone out. Note, I didn't say that muay thai fighters aren't tough, please don't try and twist my words. I assume if someone can withstand a kick to the head, then they would have to be pretty close to invincible, or the closest thing to it. Oh, a kick that won't KO them now ? You never said that before. You just decided to add that then when you realised your argument was about as logical as pigs can fly ? Hey! If a kick to my head doesn't KO me, I can sustain a kick to the head too! I'm not even a thai fighter, man, I must be one tough mother fluffer!
  15. No, ballistic and dynamic are different stretches.. Dynamic stretching should be done before your workout as part of your warm up.
  16. Yeap, as Withers said, dynamic stretches in the morning.
  17. Wow, you must be quite an awesomely tough fighter, Eye Of The Tiger! Please keep those witty comments of yours coming.
  18. ROFL.. I think you need a dose of reality.
  19. ROFL, Kensai, I'm just gonna apply a soft arm bar on you, okay ? =p
  20. Eye Of The Tiger, you're very amusing, you've contradicted yourself numberous times and get upset when people point it out. I'm going with Kensai on this one, what comes out of your mouth is garbage. Hmm, garbage in, garbage out applies here don't you think ? You stated karate was an aggressive MA, now you've given up on that stance and taken to it being a hard art. 'Hard is where you use your strength against the opponent to hurt them' - I thought just about all arts would require their practioners to use some strength, technique requires the use of muscles, some techniques are just more efficient. From what I have seen, there is no magical art where the practioner can just stand there and hurt the opponent without touching him. I suppose we could conclude that all arts are hard then ? I will take your definition of hard and soft as what you take them to mean. If you think grappling is useless because it's not a hard art, you're wrong. What do you define grappling as ? Hard, or soft ? It requires minimal strength exertion on your behalf, rolling for 30min is no big deal compared to 30min of kicking and punching. Yet, the submission holds are so effective and devestating. Someone slaps an arm bar on you, then cranks it, hyper-extending the elbow, that's gonna hurt. Think many people will fight after their elbow has been hyper-extended ? By the same token, I could apply a choke on someone - cutting off the flow of blood to the brain, leave them in peace and walk away. Both are effective ways to end the fight, one takes the definition of 'hard', the other takes the definition of 'soft'. What do you class grappling as ? Is it hard and soft like wing chun too ? THIS IS UTTER **** ! It depends purely on the practioner. I can choke someone out, walk away, or I can choke someone out and continue holding the choke on them until I've held it long enough for them to have brain damage. Not so soft now is it ? If you're going to make a post, PLEASE try and sustain the logic and don't contradict yourself.
  21. Thai boxing and krav mega are two different arts. They're both effective and hard arts which'll make you an awesome fighter within 4 years. _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. 22. I agree.. Someone also mentioned to look at the opponent's arm & legs, to somebody who watches your eyes, this make it really easy for them to see where you're going to hit. Look them in the eye, most people look at their opponent's body which is an advantage to you. You can win just with the eyes, keep looking at your opponent's eyes, even if they're not looking at yours, try and instill some fear in them through your eyes.
  23. I think BJJ and a striking art.. BJJ 'cause they can control an opponent without hurting them and if worse comes to worst they can hurt them if they need to..
  24. I live and breathe martial arts. I don't have to find motivation to train, it's there, unlike with my studies. The only time I talk about martial arts is with other martial artists. I find other people who don't do martial arts don't understand, however some people think it's cool and one person even told me it's a fashion now, it's the done thing! When I did kickboxing and came home limping from the leg kicks, my family would laugh at me and say I'm an idiot. To me, the martial arts are sublime, pain isn't pain, pain to me means I am getting better, there is no easy road to being a great martial artist and the challenge is so rewarding. I truly believe to be able to give out pain, you have to feel and understand pain. I never had much appreciation for the side kick, it was a hard kick so it didn't seem too practical, I didn't like the look of it at first. Then in sparring I side stepped my instructors front kick, he put his foot down on the ground, then proceeded to plant this side kick right through the thick padding I was wearing (we liked going hard) and through my gut. Right then and there is when I started to appreciate and respect the side. I've now got a pretty solid side kick & I do the exact same thing to people that my instructor did to me 'cause it was so effective. =p I believe this is how you grow as a martial artist, experience something, appreciate & respect it, then you set about learning how to do it 'cause you know how effective it is. I believe pain is essential to self-growth, the cliche no pain, no gain applies. =) I've rambled a bit, sorry.
