Well im totaly screwed up. Hehehe. I write left handed and do most other stuff left handed. I kick a football with my right foot. And like Scorcho said. You learn to use both sides but prefer one. Has for me i fight in a right handed stance. It helps that im left handed because my lead hand can generate more power. -
Very Good Question Luna. There are 2 ways in which i think about it. 1. when you practice the formal kihon version in class, your teaching your arm an optimum "groove" that belongs to that block, which incorporates all of the applications, thereby practicing the full range of motion with power and speed. When it comes to sparring, you then are able to insert your arm into that groove anywhere along its path (as may be required by the circumstances) while also maximising the strength and speed for that aspect of the block or strike because at that point you're in the groove that you're already accustomed to. 2. The constant repetition of kihon (if done correctly) will preload the body with the automatic movement. When you learn to ride a bike, you ride in a straight line on fairly level ground, but when you go mountain biking you use the same movements you learned to use when you started, but you adapt them to the terrain and other exigencies. You can ride in the mountains because certain kinds of movement have become automatic and work. It is the same with martial arts techniques. If you learn to use a hammer correctly, you can drive a nail easily because you have the technique. What size nail you drive, where you drive it, at what angle you drive it, and what you are building are determined by you later. All this presumes that you are learning the correct principles of movement and practicing them until they are automatic. Not to metion it teaches you hip rotation, twisting, deflection, etc. which will add power to your techniques. Hope this has helped. It alot easier to demonstate. Remember, different styles have different ways of teaching the same thing. Try a few styles out and see which one u think best fits you.

wooden dummy is good to work blocks and parries, bag and makiwara are good for power, distance, etc

record yourself saying "breathe in, breathe out" and listen to it with a walkman when your training. hehehe, just kidding.

i attach a small boiy(sp) (one of those things that floats in the ocean or whatever) to a beam in my garage. i swing it and has it comes at me i dodge out of the way and if it slows down i hit it, this improves striking accuracy also. this thing is round and hard so if you dont move out of the way it hurts your head. hehehe

i hang mine from a beam in my garage with a peice of chain. Just try and find something very solid that will not fall down.

I think they work different muscle groups, so its hard to compare them. But both are pretty simple excersises that you can do without equipment.

Aparently a hormone called adrenocorticotropin can work effectively has a human alarm clock simply by thinking about the time you want to wake up the night before. It is said to kick in about 90 minutes before we told ourselves to wake up.

Sleep is necessary for our bodies to repair itself and grow new cells. Most people need 7-8 hours of sleep a day. Some only need 5 while others need 9 or more. To find out how much u need when your on holiday or something go to bed at the same time every night for a few nights and allow yourself to wake up without an alarm clock. Your should record how long you sleep and take the average. Try and get this much sleep from now on to stay healthy.

For most people (including myself) its unlikely you'll know how to use your total lung capacity. With age, the lungs elasticity and capacity decreases. To keep lungs healthy try breathing in and out forcefully, pushing all the air out of the lungs.

Treebranch and Tibby, i asked what type of techniques your style is mainly made up of. Not which is better or worse or which is most useful. -

Geez Martial Artist. Sounds like you need to learn how to avoid situations rather than get mugged by every person that walks past you. Or you could stop giving fictional examples.

"The most common mistake people make in tying their belt is tying it in a half-knot so that one end hangs stragiht down and the other stays on top. In Japan, karate students of the Shinto religion see this has a symbol of death." I have pictures of even black belts that tie there belt incorrectly like this.

in my style its whenever the instructor thinks the student is ready. In most cases it depends on what style you do, how often you train and the method your instructor chooses. about every 6 months for lower grades is a pretty good amount of time.

You could practise punching correctly. Im not saying your doing it wrong. But if it hurts then maybe your not doing it quiet right.
