  1. I partly agree with wado_lee. I dont think everyone has there own style. Rather everyone expresses the style they train, in there own way.
  2. When you become a more 'advanced' student you should be able to use both hands at the same time. 1 blocking and the other striking.
  3. Do want videos of just general information about them?
  4. I agree completely with SevenStar. If you are serious about competing then you should get used to taking part in hard sparring sessions so you can at least feel what full power strikes are like.
  5. he was born in melbourne australia, i think at the time his parents where doing performances across australia. He soon moved back to china though.
  6. At our school we do both heian and the older pinan kata. Pinan has shorter stances, similar to what was originally used. As a general rule: -zenkutsu dachi is the same but sometimes a more relaxed stance is used. -kokutsu dachi is replaced by neko-ashi dachi -kiba dachi is replaced with shiko dachi or a relaxed stance.
  7. Im like a couple of the other people who posted. No photos of me training at all.
  8. If you can find some other people who also want to train that would help you alot because you can learn together and motivate each other.
  9. I pay $32 australian per month.
  10. Control is not the only reason why i think striking is more effective. Im interested in hearing your reasons.
  11. Im not saying you should use just striking or just grappling. Rather im comparing the use of striking and locks in a self defence situation. For me strikes are more practical.
  12. I started this topic to discuss the merits of striking and grappling in a self defence situation and how the 2 compare in effectivness. In my opinion striking is ususally a better weapon to defend yourself with because you can control how hard you hit a person and even if you hit them softly it still can stun or just annoy them. But if you apply a lock to someone e.g. an armbar, you have to continue holding the technique and unless you almost completely break the limb then it will have little effect. Some people might say that from a legal point of view striking is concidered more violent than choking someone out of applying a lock to them. This is where controling the strike comes into it again, a black eye and some bruises are alot less violent than snapping a limb. Overall the main aim in self defence should be to get away form your attacker. Its alot harder to get away from someone if you are commited to holding/locking them. Please tell me your thoughts about this topic. thanks, cross
  13. We rely on our legs to stand. If you kick someone in the head they *might* fall over if you hit them hard enough(remembering the head is a very small target). But hit a person in the knee and there is more of a chance they will go down, not to mention its alot harder to block/grab a kick that is coming to your legs.
  14. Venezolano, Would you mind explaining why mine is not a good example?
  15. Even if someone was holding a knife to your throat? and if the kick missed you would be killed? Cummon, Self Defence is about surviving, not trying to look fancy. I bet you would blow kisses to the crowd after you did your tripple spinning snap flip flying round kick, to right?? hahaha
  16. Isometrics is used to mostly strengthen the tendons but im sure it stretches them also.
  17. it can be good for cardio, depending on how hard you do it.
  18. No military training here, im in Australia, not very common to have military training unless you are in the armed forces or reserves.
  19. Bite them wherever you can until you can get your arms free then hit eyes, groin, throat etc.
  20. 14 or 16oz.
  21. It probably hurts he pride even more that you didnt let it get to you when she hit you. Just play fair and the instructor will soon notice if she is doing things a black belt shouldnt do to lower grades. In saying that, the belts arnt that important because like you said, you forced her back, so next time just dont go easy on her after it, keep pushing her backwards.
  22. Stick, Depends how you learn it, nearly all the same principles can be applied to any weapon.
  23. Depending on the situation i either wouldnt use a weapon or just grab the most practicle thing i could. (i play a few different sports which means i have alot of different sticks, bats and clubs lying around my house). hehehe
