  1. Many 'sport' styles have adopted the conditioning practices of the older systems. ie shotokan using chi-ishi, doing impact conditioning etc. Sadly most do not admit this is an addition, nor their source.
  2. Rather than teaching from the Kata - this move means this - I like like to take a real attack and work through the different responses (bunkai), that a kata(s) has to it. So students can select one that suits them best.
  3. My advice, stick with the basics and work on them. The belt syllabus is there to add techniques to your training, as you go through it. Nothing wrong with learning more advanced techniques, but at this very early stage, I would advise against.
  4. Hello and welcome to the forum.

  7. It's something I don't think much on, as Karate as been part of my life for most of it. I have trouble detaching myself to see were it changed things, as i don't see it as change, as such. And then I look around me , at my contemporaries : friends , colleagues etc. Then there's a sudden realization....there but by the grace of god go I.
  8. The key thing I've found to identify a group as 'McDojo' is the active promotion or advertising for instructors among the lower grade students. Training students, who lack the skill in the performance of techniques, to teach those techniques . Illustrating and perpetuating the total lack of depth and quality associated with 'McDojos'. The worst case example we have here in GB. Job adverts for instructors - NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY ! I kid you not. This is the group i seem to get in trouble about, when I write about them...so, no names no pack drill.
  9. As with your Kenpo experience, it differs from Dojo to Dojo, never mind style to style. So one teacher may teach the same style, but with a focus on fitness and conditioning. Another may focus on skill and technical matters.
  10. Just to keep training and learning.
  11. As a Karateka, who has done standard non/semi contact competition karate events in the past. I have grown to dislike it. At least TKD is hitting the opponent.
  12. Happy Birthday.
  13. It's a catch 22 situation. Understanding the commercial side, but disliking the enforced nature of it. Plus, I see this in McDojo's , more than quality Dojo's, but not always.
  14. Zaine - - I don't view this as a challenge, more an expression of the ignorance of the young man. Example 'studied Kenjutsu', probably means he's watched a video or 'youtube' - at best read a book. Comparable to an event years ago at our Dojo. A young man would come and watch - not take part, just watch. We talked to him...he loved the martial arts, great martial arts fan etc. From watching Kung Fu movies - HE JUST WANTED TO WATCH AND NOT DO ! Thought watching made him a martial artist : sad.
  15. I can recommend this : http://www.tamesidekarate.com/ I've trained with The instructor Julian Mallalieu, many times.
  16. There have been times in my life when this sort of thing would have been very appealing.
  17. Needs stopping. Passed it onto his group over here. Thanks for the heads up sensei8
  18. There is a problem with McDojo's teaching both adults and children in the same class, at the same time. This as lead to Karate being watered down, compromised. But the students within the McDojo don't realize this.
  19. Beyond the usual and to expected bruises and bust lip and odd bust nose. The major repeat injury for me is broken toes and metatarsals from sparring and pad/bag work.
  20. There is one slight issue around the concept of children and parents training together - the curriculum. Children and there parents can't be taught the same curriculum, there is a danger of compromising the art. Children can't or should not be taught various things : locking and choking methods : conditioning : contact sparring etc. For reasons of good sense, safety and long term health. But, to not teach these to the parent short changes them and compromises the effectiveness of the art.
  21. Brilliant. ! Brought a smile to my face, what a challenge he has overcome.
  22. Excellent !
  23. Interesting to hear tallgeese. Viewing the concept of form training from the point a view of a different linage, has shed light on the concept of form training and opened it up for you. This is a good thing. Sadly, most reject the concept of form training as an article of faith , rather than as a result of a rational process. The article of faith approach has lead to the belief that the very concept of form training is invalid. A sadly immature stand point.
