  1. A computer programmer against a temp doing menial bindery work, there is the fight to end all fights. Would anyone be armed with a pocket protector? Always watch out when someone is starting to loose and they resort to dirty tactics like throwing paper clips!
  2. Maybe those who like the entertainment value of musical patterns should buy Darrin's Dance groves, and you could add some N'Sync moves to your next routine. You could add in a pop and lock routine. Six foot trophies for a made up pattern using the Village People Soundtrack....McDojo. Funky uniforms for demo team....McDojo. Musical kata...the sycronized swimming of the martial arts.
  3. This is the video, warning do not wtch if you have a weak stomatch: http://www.hinduunity.com/muslim_murderers.mpeg
  4. With organizations that promote musical kata, open forms, create a pattern, and martial arts tricks events martial arts is moving in a bad direction. These types of events help create mcdojos, focus on movie action garbage, and dance routines. Musical kata with cowboy hats and doing a hoedown during you form (saw that recently in Vancouver). A school can focus on dance rather than skills that are worthwhile. Watered dow at its best. Most people in martial arts today don't know their own lineage...
  5. It is typically shared under the guidance and supervision of an instructor. There is medecine that must be used in conjunction of the training. If done wrong there are serious reprecussions. There is alot of information on the web. but much of it is what I would consider bad in my training experience. Best leave it to instruction from proper sources. I myself do know how to brew medicine and the proper techniques, but I do not share them outside of my school. Sorry...
  6. Don't forget the tin foil! Withers were you guys making licence plates at the time? [ This Message was edited by: Iron Arahat on 2002-06-15 14:18 ]
  7. Depends what Northern Style means? Its a lay classification that does 100% work. People say northern focuses on legs while southern focus on the fists. Northern styles like xingyiquan and baguazhang make little use of kicking and have narrow shorter postures (supposedly a characteristic of southern styles). Hung gar a southern style (because it originated in Canton) makes extensive uses of kicks (a northern charateristic). What makes an experience authentic, or authentic kung fu. I assume lineage. How does it differ from branched off styles...what styles are we talking about? Are we talking Lau Gar in comparision to Hung Gar. Lau Gar being a family derivative, or we talking about Wing Chun vs. Shaolin Kung Fu?
  8. By the way Owthat hurst, my one student thought you were cute, but was oo shy to even say hello when I introduced you to the guys.
  9. Good looking ladies don't hurt...funny as it may sound. Guy's will sign up, because a girl that is good looking and can kick your butt is appealing to most. Second the intesity of work out you get from the males in your class will increase. The fragile male ego will work at all costs to impress the girl, even though she could probably careless. I'd go to the local Hooters restraunt and offer them lessons for $5-10 per month (charge them something - or they might think your a perve). Target a modelling agency with the same strategy.
  10. It's a money grab. Business as usual in some schools. Same deal as those who charge extra for "sparring classes" or "black belt club" or any "specialty classes". All BS.
  11. We saw Owthathurts, short time when we registered our weight on Friday. Sorry for the underwear modelling. Anyways we did well. Two Golds Two Silvers One Bronze...all in San Shou.
  12. Were here in Vancouver, I'm the guy in the black handing the award to the big guy in glasses We are at Metrotown right now. Will be weighing in a 6pm...I'll be the guy in his underwear.
  13. Can actually find the Kleck and GErtz paper here: http://www.guncite.com/gcdgklec.html
  14. I'm pretty easy to find..there is a picture of me handing out a volunteer award at the club here: http://homepage.mac.com/diromj/PhotoAlbum4.html I will be coaching as well as competing, so I should be easy to spot. Or you could always find us at the Radisson...to all forum members going remember that we always need a guide to the clubs in Vancouver...and pretty hostessess are always appreciated
  15. In San Shou the hook kick is seldom used, unless you really out class the other person. A skilled fighter will easily counter the move with a throw.

  18. I don't live in the US , and I'll sleep fine at night knowing that there are alot less chance of me getting shot (even in my line of work) than you do as just a citizen of the US. Provoking thought is not a waste of time, unless you fall into the category of the second quote. Well I'll leave you with this: Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. --Will Durant A closed mind is like a closed book; just a block of wood. -- Chinese Proverb
  19. For you who missed the Holyfield - Rahman fight. Take a look at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/boxing/news/2002/06/01/rahman_holyfield_ap/ Rahman started to grow a new head...this is seriously the worst swell I've ever seen!!!!
  20. I'm afraid my credability is fine when I quote stats I give the authors or the agencies name (ie. FBI Report, Dept. of Just, Kellermann and Reay, N.E. Journal of Medicine). So I assure you they are far from random statistics. Are you sure you read my posts Withers? As for hating guns, I never said I hated them I just stated, that they should have a more controls (hate is emotional, and an assumption on your behalf). The Brady Bill a gun control initiative and other state conrolled initiatives has been linked to helping reducing firearm deaths since its introduction in 1994. Firearm Deaths by Year (year/#/rate per 100,000) 1993 39,595 15.4 1994 38,505 14.8 1995 35,957 13.7 1996 34,040 12.8 1997 32,436 12.1 1998 30,708 11.4 (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Vital Statistics Reports, vol. 48, no. 11, July 24, 2000.) I think KNOWLEDGE and an OPEN MIND are the most powerful weapons for self-defense.
  21. Congrats...keep up the hard work!
  22. "It is a fact that more people die in swimming pools so should we now ban those? I don't have exact numbers but i'm sure I could round them up. I agree that there are a lot of people who carry who are untrained. Law Enforcement officials are sometimes the worst. This is a fact!!! I'm friends with a few police officers and they have the worst gun handling skills I've ever seen to the point I will not go shooting with them. Just because they carry everyday doesn't mean they are highly trained." You should look up stats before you compare it ruins your credibility, 1994 - 1,851 Swimming Pool Deaths in the US compared to 38,505 firearms deaths (this rate includes accidents -NCIPC Publications). As for the rest of the quote I do have issues with it.."I have a friend..." is not the best argument in the world. As for you "fact" on law enforcement, it is an "opinion"...and I won't even get started.
  23. Chance are you have bruised the bone, it will go away after some time, you may note some difference in the shape, or a small lump (only if you press down on ou skin). That may always be there to a degree, because the bone has released a liquid to help solidify the damage to your leg. Take it easy you'll likeley be fine in 4 weeks. But do get the x-ray just in case.
  24. I would say the gun manufacturers are to a degree to blame for part of the problems associated with guns. In the late 1980s, the gun industry began targeting women to counter slumping handgun sales among its primary market of white males. The false message delivered by gunmakers was clear: the greatest threat posed to a woman was an attack by a stranger and, the best form of protection a woman could rely upon was a handgun. Even thought the probability of this threat was slim (view previous posts). Illegal guns start from legal means, but if they are sold legally, can we hold a company responsible for illegal transactions after the point of legal sales? I too believe that an all-out ban of guns is not the answer, but in fact futher control. Guns do have a role in society, but it should be limited. People who target shoot can be part of a gun club. In many countries this is the case, the gun resides at the gun club, because there is no need for a handgun to be away from the club, especially in an urban setting. The guns move from club to club for competition, and the club and the owner are legally responsible for the gun itself. It a rural setting a gun may be required to protect a residence from animals. Many people own guns in such a setting to shoot bears, or other problematic animals to their farm livestock like coyotes. An abundance of firearms, because it is a right? Is a little extreme in my eyes. But the NRA in the US is a powerful political body. Guns are deep rooted in American culture, and it is unfortunate that the 'right' indirectly fuels the illegal gun trade. Maybe have people lock up their guns in safes or in clubs would help aliviate some of the problem, rather than have them in a dresser drawer. Socialization plays a huge role in things, but alas social problems are so deep rooted in many things that it is very difficult to change if at all even possible. The way we are socialized is the way in which we learn, and molds who we become in many cases. Some people are indeed victims of socialization. One poor guy was a victim of a handgun down the front of his pants, shooting his leg, and powder burning a sensitive area. Why did he do that I'm sure it was because of movies, and trying to look cool. I agree that this thread has taken a new direction than probably initially started, but has turned into a good discussion nonetheless. As form my handle "Iron" is my ring name. Started as half serious, half joke, but a name that was given to me by others, a long story. 'Arahat' or 'Lohan' was originally a bandit who roamed China until he befriended a buddhist monk. The Lohan then spent his life undertaking a complete personal change. The Lohan became academic, and helped others through personal sacrifice.
  25. There is a good reason that I believe that guns belong in gun clubs for the public. If you do target shooting, biathlon, big game hunting, and so on if you legally obtain a firarm fine. Beyond that is there really a need? I understand why people feel a need to own firearms for self defense. People just need to understand that owning a firearm can potentially raise the stakes in any confrontational situation. [ This Message was edited by: Iron Arahat on 2002-06-04 23:27 ]
