  1. I started a non-profit association that taught martial arts about four years ago, and ran two classes five days a week....I have unfortunately left that communty, but a student is now teaching classes there (Northern Ogre). I am looking to do the same now.
  2. Any ranking system is basically either, so it is easier for instructors to work with students (especially in larger schools). Or it is a great way to make extra mney off people with rank tests and such.
  3. Wavemasters do no possess the weight like a heavy bag, but is better than the alternative of no bag at all. As far as anyone beating anyone else, really depends on alot of factors. I do find that many martial arts styles do not train "fight conditioning" in the way that a boxer or ring sport would.
  4. Uhhh...I wouldn't compare anything to Tekken for a style analysis. Wait to see the classes the gym appears to be teaching a lot of different styles, I would see who is teaching these styles.
  5. He did research, but you can only find out what others will tell you, and what others may print. It can be hard enough to do "enough" research on local schools, let alone in another country. Just sharing information from his experience, as often people dream of "training at the Shaolin Temple".
  6. One of my classmates just returned from China, where he went to study "Shaolin". He paid $600 US for a month of training, plus about $1700 for the plane fair to China. He had an interesting time to say the least. He attended a "statellite" school. Unfortunately for him, there was no heat or running water in the quarters provided, nor an area to prepare food. The first night apparently the tempearture dropped below the freezing mark. These conditions were not the what was promised to him prior to embarking on the trip. He showed the instructors what he had learned as a basis, and was told it was "Canadian Kung-fu". the funny thing after he had showed them some pictures from the school, the teachers at the school pointed to one of the pictures from the club, and became exited, exclaiming that the person was "famous". He was treated a little different after that, and was told that the style was now good. At this time he decided that this was not the experience that he wanted, and toured instead...but no refund. An interesting lesson to be learned for those who wish to study in China.
  7. I have seen him fight, but it has been a while. Last I saw him fight was Shonnie Carter, but to be quite honest I stopped following a while ago, after he set up matches outside the IKF. San Shou is the sport evolution of Kung-fu challenge matches, just a common ground for all styles to compete.
  8. Henry...my prior posts are for some of the other users that have been posting in this thread. I know that you are aware of the fact you are training in a satellite school. As for shoes call phone - 0371-2878398 they are in Denfeng. Henry this is a forum as well, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Enjoy your training.
  9. The link is full of why the internet can be bad for martial arts.
  10. The problem is currently that Shaolin has supposedly "endorsed" people like Steve DeMasco in the US. The push of the Chinese government also has most Monks teaching 'modern style', which is very different from the 'inner school'. Does it matter if you learn actual 'shotokan karate'? Or actual 'WTF Tae Kwon Do"? How many schools do we see that teach their own brand of Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, and so on? China is not immune to these things either. Many people will cash in on money, so call disciples are often not even that. Many people donate to the temple to get plaques of recognition erected, and then claim to be endorsed by the Shaolin Temple, ie. shaolin-do. People such as Grandmaster Simon and Temple Kung Fu also claim to be prophets of Shaolin, which is sad because he switched from Simon's Karate School, when Kung-fu became popular (even though never training), and does not admit that history even though there is evidence otherwise http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/blackbelt/1965/apr65/wwtourn/wwtourn.html Does it matter? I guess that is for each individual to judge for himself. Personally it saddens me, the world of commercialism, and martial arts. It also saddens me that China is not immune and the damage being done to the history of Shaolin.
  11. That is a satellite school, not the actual temple. While Henry South will be learning kung fu, he will be learning from likely a monks disciple or lay disciple. From the site metioned above: Che wen long Manager Northern China Shao Lin Martial Arts Academy Ye He Ancient castle, Siping city, Jilin Province P R China This is not the Temple itself (far from it). Sorry if I offend, but truth be known people fanatasize about training at the Temple, like a bad Hollywood movie, and will pay large dollars to train at satellites that have little to do with the temple. One of my Jr's is going to embark on a trip this summer, and we are doing our best to ensure that he is not being taken in a "tourist trap". Shi De Qian has visited our school, and contact is being made to ensure the training is authentic, but we know that either way he will not be training within the inner Temple.
  12. Paul Vunaks page is http://www.fighting.net he does offer certification, but cost alot of money and is just a weekend course.
  13. https://www.wle.com Wing Lam teaches the Lau Gar sets as part of his Hung Gar system...cheers
  14. I have seen the stuff before...I don't buy it.
  15. I assume Henry that you will be learning at one of the satalite schools to learn kung-fu. Not join the ranks of the monks.
  16. No touch KO meaning not making contact...I have a hard time buying that.
  17. Some techniques, you will likely never use because, they just don't blend. Good disipline to improve them, but a lot of the time you will never actually use them in a fight.
  18. Your right, I've been doing it wrong for all these years. I should have just payed lots of money instead of training hard. All that time I could have saved just writing a cheque and training for 48 hrs, I could have be the next thing in MA Foolish me!
  19. That's what I said here: I am not certain if you he will be able to understand my Portuguese. You he will laugh probably when you read this, because my translation is probably not good. What is your question?
  20. I take time off, usually when I feel burnt out. I haven't trained for a few months now. When I say this I still practice, but do not do a full fledged workout. I have trained for 18 years now, so I guess time off can't hurt.
  21. Eu não sou certo se você puder compreender meu português. Seu inglês pode ser nao bom, mas você rirá provavelmente quando você lê este, porque minha tradução não é provavelmente boa. Que era sua pergunta?
  22. The latest UFC's are starting to look like profession wrestling. Although not as bad as Pride which includes Professional Wrestlers in their program.
  23. Agreed...you can see the same animals from different styles, and they look nothing alike.
