I don't think I will be fighting at this tourney...if I can't throw, kick below the waist or punch to the face, I am pretty much screwed. Most likely I would get disqualified for habits. I was just curious how they ran, and was tossing the idea around this morning as I might be in the area...I was interested in seeing Lirette's fight that night as well. I hope to have a fight soon...I've been off since July, and didn't have the bucks to go to the Worlds... I'll bring my disco shoes when I come to town though Lori... John Travolta lives!!!!

Just curious if anyone is going...I'm also curious about this 60% power rules, as well as no-face contact. Has anyone been to their past tourney's?

If you have a heart condition I would drop the Ma Hung from the regiment if it is over 5mg. You have to watch alot of these "meta" blends sold today. Some pose serious risks and due to limited testing and easy approval of herbal remidies from the FDA one must always be cautious.

Should any black belt be able to open a dojo
Iron Arahat replied to Adonnis's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Seeing that in some system I have heard that it takes less than three years to obtain a black belt, I would say the answer should be "no". Some countries have government regulated laws to deal with this issue. -
The ECA stack is dangerous, whether it is from natural herbs or extracts. Above 5mg of ephedrine poses some serious health risks. Taking ECA with a heart condition is asking for trouble. Creatine is good for vegitarians as they have no natural source of Creatine --- as it comes from red meat. Monitor your protien intake...you can eat too much in which case you will have some expensive feces. As well as your kidneys will be overloaded. Just my 10 cents....

Iron Arahat replied to blood talon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I disagree with that jujitsu would be the best, or any grappling heavy art. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying don't know any grappling. Grappling is an urban setting is not always the best idea. Multiple attackers, hard or sharp surfaces, and so on. -
Diferences in Chinese and Japanese/Okinawan martial arts
Iron Arahat replied to Phantasmatic's topic in Karate
You could start by explaining what you mean by soft style. This term is thrown around alot as a division, and means different things to different people. -
I know we almost had this game going about a month ago, and was to be run by GoldDragon. I think we should try to get it going once again. I don't think GoldDragon is comming back, we haven't seen him since I think the end of September. I know he had internet problems someone posted. Must of been major ones like no computer for his phone line...

I agree with Kickchick in that you should'nt train in these methods without a qualified instructor. There is alot of damage you can do to yourself in the training, some that will appear later as you get older. You need to use proper technique, and use the proper "medicine" in order to prevent things such as arthritis. Also punching to you bleed, and wait to heal is bad. Yes you may train your hands harder fast, but there is alot of scare tissue build up, and internal damage to your hands. Also training before full body development can cause damage. This why I dpn't believe in teaching these techniques to childreens and young teens.

Doug Some suggestions are: School Gymnasiums - Elematary to H.S. College or University Campuses Recreation Centres YMCA (I guess this is not possible) Fitness Clubs Warehouse Space Ask around split your enrollement fee's with a club 50/50 or whatever in exchange for space no matter how few or how many students you get. Try getting someone to donate space, set up the club as a non-profit society. Lots of opportunity....I started our new club on an old stage to start, and after 2 years we finally got our own space. Good luck man...

Iron Arahat replied to Hwa-rang's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I always like the northern / southern division. It is based off the saying "Nan quan, bei tui" which means "south fist, north legs"; however, the way in which Chinese can be read " Nan tui, bei quan" which means "south legs, north fist". Styles like hung-gar which is southern styles, make use of wide stances, and kicks (typically charateristic of Northerns styles). Baguazhang a northern style makes very little use of kicking. Internal and external differentiations are also ideas that evolved around the 1600's. Truthfully most are also misleading as to the meanings of internal and external. -
Is it actual JKD?
Iron Arahat replied to The JKD Kid's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I would say that JKD Concepts just use JKD as a promo tool, and little more. I personally believe that everyone has a "base" style, which they will draw heavily on. This is what they are teaching in the case of a JKD instructor I believe this should be Jun Fan. You can't build a good house without a solid foundation, for JKD this would be Jun Fan. I know some JKD instructors that have bases in other arts like Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kung-Fu etc... they teach JKD as a secondary class. I personally belive that is just a marketing ploy to use Bruce's name. Some of these guy claiming to be instructors with only a months work of weeekend seminars to their credit. Morallly and ethically if you have learned Jun Fan Gung Fu then fine, as you progress call it JKD. Crosstraing, and well don't claim you are doing Bruce's Fighting Style.... Just my 10 cents. -

Iron Arahat replied to Hwa-rang's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
That all really depends on the individual, and seeing that there are over 500 document styles of kung-fu, it would be difficult to compare and state what styles are best. Generally speaking like any art it is best to go watch classes of what is available in your area, and take what is best suited for you. -
Judo Ranking?
Iron Arahat replied to three60roundhouse's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Judo Ranks as follow: White Yellow Green Blue Brown Black -
I feel they are a little over zealous in their philosophy. I had an instructor tell me that utilizing this technique, that they can beat virtually anyone. The guy wanted to run seminars out of my school, and refer me to read the info on the website. He wanted $100 per head per day. I just laughed and said I'd think about it.

The straight blast is simply a series of punches in succession, that are targeted at the centerline of the opponent from face to chest height. A concept borrowed from Wing Chun...
-
Quote from http://www.fighting.net: "Absolutely every serious altercation that I ever saw Bruce Lee in, he would execute a straight blast to his opponent."..."The straight blast was, and still is the single most important thing to do in a fight. It is safe to say that if we were to search the world for the best Karate man, the best Gung-fu man, the best Aikido man, the best Thai boxer, the best grappler (and so on), you can bet that none of these fighters have ever practiced their art RUNNING BACKWARDS!" I'm curious what you guys think...

I added a Drunken Boxing Form to my video page which I found on the net. I had never seen this form before. I was wondering what you think...it looks very much like it is a modern style form, than anything traditional. Tell me what you think http://shaolinwushu.tripod.com/movies.htm The movie is about 12 megs, so if you don't have high speed I'm sorry

Shelbelle wrote: "Does this documentary apply to everyone, Iron Arahat? Does it apply to the organizations you deal with or the San Shou event you fought in as well? I guess I can draw my own conclusions! " Yes, these comments apply to most ring sports, San Shou included (when I state kickboxing I mean all types). This is to do with the fact that there is more than a dozen sanctioning bodies in North America alone. I think something I posted to you back on August 9th, 2001 speaks to this: "A good show to watch Sharbelle is called the "Business of Boxing", it shares many truths with that of kickboxing (I believe it was A&E or Discovery). I have won titles myself in my younger days, but I don't put much value on them, they were made out to be more than they actually were. " Shelbelle also wrote: "Hmmmm! 7 posts and I am challenging all the time? This is funny and I think you should reread my posts"...."I never challenged him and I never challenged you" On August 14, 2001 Shebella also wrote to Iron Arahat: "I am sure that Kru Mike would welcome a submission from IRON ARAFAT to compete" I would consider the above comment an indirect challenge. 2 indirect challenges in 7 posts to be a good percentage. I could also take offense to your spelling of my name, but I am sure that the capped version of my name you wrote was just a typo. I personally wonder why you were so quick to jump on people, because of a statement that is far from what I consider harsh (critisizm followed by praise). Kudos that you clarified thing to ramcalgary and appologized, I defended him because of what appeared to be an indirect challenge, and what I would consider to be more or less a threat (the same way in which ramcalgary took it). I have no problem with clarification of points, or posting opposing views, that's what discussions are, but the above noted statement and the following: "Would you like to get involved fighting ramcalgary? I will let Mr. Miles know of your interest (tell him you go by the name ramcalgary and I will make sure Mr. Miles understands). I am sure he could set you up in an ISKA fight on one of his events with no problem as he knows the ISKA President very well. Let him see what you got and maybe Mr. Miles will put you on television" should probably be avoided, and in my opinion are not needed (or need to be put forward differently)... Congrats to Jason Jillian for being selected for the K-2 event in Montreal, and if Ms. McDermott is still at your club give her my regards. Cheers. I'm just curious who you are, seeing as you are one of Mike Miles athletes. I also find it funny that you are so quick to throw out challenges all the time. Ramcalgary did nothing but show respect for your camp. Ramcalgary stated "Mike Miles fighters are for the most part ameteurs although his top amateurs could kick a great number of professionals butts." To me this shows that he appreciates the talent from the Miles camp. Shelbella stated "I assume you mean when Mr. Miles athletes win they were not evenly matched but when they lose, they were evenly matched. Hilarious. Have you ever worked as a matchmaker before? Have you ever fought (where)? Matchmaking relies on so many elements beyond just athletes records." I suggest you watch the documentary the business of boxing...the same lies true here (you can draw your own conclusions from there).
