There is currently a case in Seattle, WA in which the plantiffs claim that being forced to bow before a competition is religious discrimination. They state that bowing to things like Jigaro Kano (the founder of Judo) violates their civil rights, as they are following Shinto beliefs. I think this is taking things a little too far myself...

Bruce Lee the TKD Connection
Iron Arahat replied to Iron Arahat's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think that stating that the club was named after a "well named Tae Kwon Do artist" and then mentioning Bruce Lee is implied. That would be like me telling the media that Bruce was a disciple of Shaolin because of Enter the Dragon. They can call themselve "little Dragons" that's their perogative...but the misrepresentation of the art is in my opinion wrong. -
Bruce Lee the TKD Connection
Iron Arahat replied to Iron Arahat's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm afraid that it is not a typo, the whole article is about a local Tae Kwon Do school, and promoting a Tae Kwon Do tournament. The interclub consists of 5 Tae Kwon Do schools in the area. I cut out the first little section as it talked about the tourney. _________________ http://shaolinwushu.tripod.com [ This Message was edited by: Iron Arahat on 2002-02-27 12:40 ] -
Just wondering what you all think of the following, which was printed in a local newspaper last week: The [name deleted] club belongs to a wider organization, the Sui Loung interclub, which is named after a well know Tae Kwon Do artist. "There's a famous martial artist from the 1960's named Bruce Lee...you may have heard of him," said the Master of the [name deleted] club. "In Hong Kong, Bruce Lee was more famous than Wayne Gretzky. He couldn't leave home without being mobbed." "But in Hong Kong they didn't call him Bruce Lee. His name was Lee Siu Loung which means 'Lee - Little dragon'," [name deleted] explained. "But there are s many clubs calling themselves 'The Dragons' that we decided to call our organization the Siu Loung interclub.

JKD must be very dependent on the instructor then. I can see situations where people will take steps backwards instead of forwards. What may seem practical to me, may not be to the next. If he is a teacher what is the likelyhood that he would include something he see's as impractical in the ciriculum? I like your analogy of the statue and clay YODA, but you can add too much sometimes and loose the essence of what you are creating. I imagine there must be a fine balance out there. I believe everyone will reach have a base whether it be Jun Fan or something else in which will influence their style, and the direction they take...

'Lohan' or 'Arahat' is a warrior in chinese mythos...Lohan is also a substyle within Shaolin. 'Iron' was given to me a a joke after the actor Jeremy Irons..."Iron" it just stuck after that. But acoording to some I should have called myself "Travolta"...

How can I get a hold of Nunchaku in Canada?
Iron Arahat replied to Che Guevara's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
If you are going to a US tournament, why would you stop in Canada? Even if you did you would not get your luggage. Customs has to take them by law. The reason being that they were used in some brutal assaults in the past. Any weapon on Canada's prohibited list has been used in a high profile murder or assault. Law makers don't always make sense. -
How can I get a hold of Nunchaku in Canada?
Iron Arahat replied to Che Guevara's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
You probably will never find anywhere you can buy them in Canada. They are prohibited weapon, and will be seized by customs upon entry...if they are found. I have seen those practice chucks for sale, just buy one of those and utilize the swivel. -
It qualifies, and the application has begun. Like Judo and TKD, we will see Wushu in Bejjing.....

What do you guys think of the newly packaged UFC? They are trying to add some excitement to the UFC by promoting the fights that fans want to see. The latest: Vitor Belfort vs. Tito Ortiz Who do you thinks will win.

I believe a great deal of people do not practice JKD for a few reasons: 1) There are still alot of "false prophets" out there, and they are more difficult to point out than in other "mainstream" arts. Remember that most people come to the martial arts with many misconceptions, regardless of style. An example the above is that wee have a Tae Kwon Do instructor who has taken a handful of weekend seminars, and is now teaching JKD as a side. When I first move to the area, I though it would be good for me to learn JKD. I watched a class, and too put it mildly I could tell instantly that he was a hack. But to the untrained eye you would never know any better. As I learn more about this person, I now have little respect for what he does. 2) Commercialization. JKD instructor in a week or weekend. JKD the American way. 3) The general differences between 'Concept' and 'nucleus' teachings. 4) If I take JKD at point A chances are at the school at point B may be entirely different. Just my two cents....
